He was delivering oil for the Waters Pierce Oil company through the country about seven miles from the city. He was quite weak, having been a sufferer from Bright’s disease for some time, and in getting on his wagon he missed his footing and fell on the tongue of the wagon just behind the team, which startled, throwing him under the front wheels. He was run over, dislocating his ankle and severely injuring him otherwise. His injuries and the general shock in his system caused his death this morning. He was in his 20th year.Transcribed by Sharon SuttonBARNEY DANIELShiner Gazette, Tuesday Morning, Nov. 23, 1904 Barney Daniel Killed.Victoria, Texas, Nov. 13. --While endeavoring to handle a roped yearling yesterday Barney Daniel, aged about 30 years, a butcher at Inez, this county, fell beneath his horse, which rolled over him, and he received injuries from which he died today without regaining consciousness. Dodd, who resides near the Riggs place on East Hill, went to visit a sick friend and left her 16-months-old child locked in the house. A short time afterward a fire alarm was sounded and when Mrs. Dodd stepped out to learn its whereabouts she saw her house a mass of flames. Rev. T. W. DODDWeimar Mercury News Special: Halletsville.Tex, September 11.—A pistol shot and the screams of a woman this morning about 9 o'clock drew a crowd to the residence occupied by Mr. D. M. Dodd. There, on a bed, lay the lifeless body of D. M. Dodd, who had fired a ball from a pistol into his left breast and died almost immediately. He got up this morning in, ate his breakfast and went to town, got a shave and returned home, People he passed on the street noticed nothing unusual about him and nothing he did, attracted his wife's attention, she being busy with her house work, until she heard the shot, where-upon she ran into the room. He was a middle aged man and had been here about a year as cotton buyer for Slayden, Clarkson & Robards, of San Antonio, and was liked by all who knew him, as he was one of those jovial men who had a pleasant word for everybody. No reason is known for his act except that he had been drinking considerable and had repeatedly told parties that he would quit that day, only to drink the next, and it is supposed that he concluded he could not quit, although he did not drink to intoxication. In his coat pocket was found a note, as follows: "Dear Wife: I think it is more honorable to die than to live the life I am living. Wire F. M. to come, and I would rather be buried at Gonzales. I love you, Jennie, for I think you are a noble woman, Good bye." The "F. M." referred to is a son residing at Waelder. Another grown son resided here with his father. Both are children by a former wife. Tragic was the sight especially of his young wife of 14 months, crushed with grief. For it was a cruel blow which fell so suddenly for his beloved. What the Shiner veteran escaped on the battlefield he met on the home field. While plowing Monday with a tractor he was also shooting doves. His father nearby heard a shot, then saw the tractor moving on and his son was on the ground. He found him mortally wounded in the side. Somehow the gun was accidentally discharged. All human help proved in vain and the young veteran died at Wagner Clinic conscious almost to his last breath. So crushing was this sudden blow to his young wife that she had to be placed under a nurse's care. It was almost impossible to part her from the grave that received her beloved one. There are also the grief stricken parents Mr. and Mrs. John Dolezal, one younger brother and two sisters. Rev Moczygemba and Hoffman officiated. Fellow veterans paid their last respects with Taps echoing memories of the war. August R. Carlson, dairy farm employe [sic] who was eyewitness to the accident, said the crash occurred at 9:30 a. m. He told investigating officers from the sheriff's department that he first noticed the BT13 training plane when it seemed to be having motor trouble at about a height of 200 feet. He said the plane came across the field at an angle, traveling from east to west. The motor suddenly quit and the plane lost altitude, struck a tree and nosed into the field. The plane was badly mangled and both occupants dead when Carlson and Paul Hornsberger reached the scene, officers reported. In piecing together the evidence, airport officials thought the airplane stalled in from between 25 and 50 feet. There was a good field about 100 yards from where Dreyer crashed. The field is deeply rutted, with a gully running through its middle where the crash occurred. It could have been that he was trying to stretch his glide to avoid the deep gully, and in turning to the left let the plane drop out from under him. Dreyer bought the airplane about three or four months ago. It was an Army surplus job and had been sitting out on the airport in the weather. The plane belonged to Dreyer personally and, according to Bobby Ragsdale of the Ragsdale Flying Service, Dreyer had checked the plane several days previous. However, due to weather, water could have gotten into the carburetor, causing the engine to quit. Dreyer had lots of experience in light airplanes, but had only flown the BT five or six times, pilots at the airport said. Investigating officers were Jim McCoy, George Pope, and Henry Kluge of the sheriff's department. The bodies were taken to the Wilke Funeral Home. Funeral services were tentatively planned at Shiner, Texas. Austin Statesman, 8 Jun 1946, page 1 Air Victims' Rites TodayFuneral service for Emmett Adolph Dreyer and his daughter, Patricia Ann, victims of a plane crash Friday morning, will be held at 4 p. m. Saturday in Shiner. The father and daughter were killed instantly at 9:30 a. m. Friday when a privately owned BT13 trainer plane crashed two and a half miles east of the Municipal Airport. Dreyer, 39, flight instructor for Ragsdale Flying School who had recently been appointed CAA flight examiner, purchased the army surplus plane four months ago and kept it staked out near the north side hangar, now crowded past capacity with between 15 and 18 planes. Approximately the same nmber [sic] of planes are staked out. The flier and his 13-year-old daughter took off from the Ragsdale Field shortly before 9:30 a. m. on a trip to Shiner where they planned to visit relatives and return Friday afternoon. In what witnesses said was an emergency landing attempt, the plane crashed into a field near the Hornsberger Dairy Farm when the engine failed at a low altitude. Patricia Ann Dreyer was a student in St. Mary's Academy and was her father's frequent flying companion. The family moved to Austin four years ago from San Antonio where Dreyer was flight instructor for the United Aero Corporation. Survivors include the wife and mother, Mrs. Isolde Dreyer, 3004 North Guadalupe; his mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Manchen of Shiner; one sister, Mrs. Jesse Starke, Yoakum; and one step brother, David Manchen, stationed in Italy. One at the Duffner Hospital and one at Renger Hospital in Hallettsville. Felix Dusek died at the Renger Hospital Thursday night. Viola Melner also died Thursday night. These young people were born and reared here and had endeared themselves to the hearts of all who knew them, by their kind and loving ways. But God needed more angels to his band. He touched their eyes and they slept, and passed over the river to that beautiful land from which no human traveler ever returns. It is indeed sad to be taken so young and in the midst of life. They leave to mourn their untimely death their parents, sisters, brothers, and a host of relatives and friends. A double funeral service was held Saturday morning at the Svetin Church at 8 o'clock. Interment took place at the Svetin Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, attesting the popularity and esteem in which these young people were held. JOHN P. Not a man of this community had more friends, no one more deserving of those friends. He was born in Blount county, East Tennessee, March 21, 1826, thereby making his age at the time of death 66 years. There survive him, wife and five children, one brother, Mr. Hugh Dyer, Hope, and; three sisters, Mrs. Harriet Rose, Cuero, Mrs. N. J. Mudd, Sweet Home, and Mrs. Mary May, Cleveland, Tenn. During the late war Mr. Dyer was mail contractor, having charge of the route from Columbus to Victoria. As to being a man, he possessed all the attributes that go to make true manhood and being Southern born, his bearing was characterized by that old chivalric spirit of ante-bellum days. The sorrowing familly have God's consolations, which are not as men's, mere soothers of the troubled mind, but seeds of positive and independent joy. "If a soldier in the ranks is wounded it is one thing to apply soothing cataplasms to stay the pain, but it is a grander thing for his general to come and bestow upon him the title, rank and insignia of a high officer." So with God's title and pledges.
