COMMITS SUICIDE.

Tragic Death of Young Man at Halletsville

A most regrettable tragedy occurred in our city Sunday night about 9 o'clock when John Heimann, one of our best young men, committed suicide, while in a fit of anger. A short time before committing the awful deed John went to the home of L. C. Hamilton and borrowed a shotgun and several shells, saying he intended to go hunting the next morning. He then went to the home of his father-in-law, D. R. Breeden and asked his (John's) wife to go home with him leaving the gun standing outside. She noticed that he was excited about something and refused to accompany him. John went outside on the street a block east of the Breeden home, took off his shoes and socks, placed the muzzle of the gun against his left breast and with his toes pulled the trigger, the entire load going into his body, tearing a hole just above the heart, from the effects of which he died about thirty minutes later, bledding to death. After the shot was fired he called for held and neighbors were the first to reach his side, but the young man made no statement before he died. Justice Shoemaker held the inquest. —Halletsville New Era.

ELLA HELMERS

Shiner Gazette, 1 Jan 1902

DEATH OF MISS ELLA HELMERS.

A Deplorable Accident.

The accidental death by burning of Miss Ella Helmers was one of the most sad and terrible affairs in the history of Shiner, and was a shock to the entire community.

A bright and beautiful young girl, just past her fourteenth year, the idol of her parents and a general favorite with all who knew her, she was stricken down without warning and in the most horrible manner.

Last Friday morning at about 10:30 little Ella was in the yard of her home amusing herself discharging fireworks, and in stooping to light a firecracker, by a small brush fire, her clothing caught fire; she was warned of the fact by a playmate and becoming frightened, she started to run. This only served to fan the fire and in a moment she was enveloped by the cruel flames. Her mother and elder sister ran to her assistance and attempted to extinguish the flames, but all in vain, the little ones’ clothes were burned entirely off her, one eye was destroyed and her flesh burned to a crisp. She had inhaled the flames while running, and was injured beyond all possible hope of recovery. The best medical aid was quickly summoned and everything possible was done to relieve her suffering. She lingered several hours when death came as a relief about 8 o’clock Friday night.

The funeral took place at 11 o’clock a. m. Sunday, and was attended by a large crowd of sympathizing friends. Rev. Wm. Dziewas conducted the burial service and there was singing by the ladies of the Methodist church.

Mrs. Helmers had her hands badly burned in her efforts to save her child, the flesh on her right hand being burned to the bone.

The Gazette and all who know this estimable family extend to them their heartfelt sympathy in their great sorrow and bereavement.

Ella N. Helmers, 2 Jun 1887 - 27 Dec 1901, daughter of D.G. & Bertha, was buried in the Shiner Sons of Herman Cemetery. Contributed by Matt Cross

SAN ANTONIO - Carl W. Hemmi of San Antonio passed away Thursday, August 22, 1985 in Stevens Convalescent Center in Hallettsville.  He was 68 years of age.

A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, August 24, 1985 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in San Antonio.  Monsignor Raymon Garcia was the celebrant.  Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Park.

Mr. Hemmi was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and the Southwest Texas Geological Society.

Carl W. Hemmi devoted his adult life to studying geology and searching for oil in the South, West, and Northwest.

"In 1945 my husband discovered the Delhi oil field in northern Louisiana, and he did the geophysical work on that field," said his wife, Christiana Hemmi.

"He was very excited when he discovered that field.  We had been really searching for aproductive (sic) oil field after the war," she said.  "It's a very productive field, and it's still producing even today."

He was born and reared the son of Lutzie and Myrtle (Phelps) Hemmi, in Hallettsville, Texas and first came to San Antonio to attend St. Mary's University, the same school that his father had attended.

Christiana said she met him in 1935 while both were attending St. Mary's.  They were married in 1937.

"He finished his studies at the University of Texas in Austin, where he graduated with a degree in geology," his wife said.

They returned to San Antonio in 1940.  She said her husband was a geologist for the Petty Geophysical Engineering Co. until 1952.

"After traveling around the United States when my husband worked for Petty, we quit traveling and moved back to San Antonio in 1958, and he started working as a geologist consultant for different oil companies," she said.

Hemmi retired in 1970, but remained active in the geological community, his wife said.

"My husband was a member of the Southwest Texas Geological Society, and he took part in establishing a geophysical library located in the Milam Building," she said.  "He also was the first president of the library."

For hobbies, he collected coins and porcelain plates, his wife said.

She said her husband was friendly and outgoing.

"Whenever we were in New York, he would say hello to people in coffee shops, and they'd look at him and wonder where they'd met him.  Of course, they hadn't" she said.

"I will remember my husband for being so sweet and gentle.  I was kind of shy and he was very friendly.  It was nice to bask in the glory of the friendships he would establish," she said.

Hallettsville Herald: Morris Hochwalt, who about twelve years ago married Miss Augusta Riemschneider [Riemenschneider] of Hallettsville, met with a tragic death at his home at Calvert Friday night. Mr. Hochwalt had been at a neighboring town on business. When he returned at about eleven o'clock at night and as he was in the habit of keeping-a bottle of good liquor in his office he drove there to take a drink before he went home. He found his bottle at its accustomed place and took a good drink of its contents. He then went home but he had scarcely reached his room when he was seized with pains, and the suspicion at once dawned on him that he had been poisoned. A physician was summoned in haste, but it was too late. It is thought that a large quantity of strychnine was put into the whisky during Mr. Hochwalt's absence. The affair is a mystery A small quantity of the poisoned liquor was given to a cat the next day with fatal result. A rigid investigation will be had. Mr. Hochwalt was engaged in the brokerage business and was prosperous.

MOSES HOLLYFIELD

Shiner Gazette, 24 May 1899

Tribute of Respect.

Died at O’Possumtrot, Gonzales Co., April 5th 1899, at 2 a. m. at the residence of his son Mr. Rance Holyfield, Mr. Moses Holyfield [sic.] at a ripe old age. He was born in Wayne Parish, Miss., Dec. 29, 1825. While quite a young man he won the hand of Miss Unicy Phelps, with whom he was happily married in August 1843. During more than fifty eventful years shared the toils and conflicts, pains and pleasures, lights and shadows of earthly stay. Truly each could say with the Psalmist “Our lines have fallen unto us in pleasant places,” for after rearing their family it was a happy privilege for both to make their home among their devoted and loving children. An aged and devoted wife, four sons, Messrs. Rance, Bud, Jeff, and John Holyfield, honored citizens of Gonzales Co., and their families, also Mr. Wm. McGill, a son-in-law and three children, who will sadly miss the pleasant and happy coming of dear Grandpa, survive him. His sunny disposition and sterling qualities won for this good man many warm friends who feel sad over his sudden death. Sick only a few days still this aged christian [sic] was ready for the great change “Watching waiting” for the summons.

He was a devoted and consistent member of Moulton Institute Methodist church and resident home place and was laid to rest at the cemetery by friends and relatives. Surely everything that loving hearts and willing hands could do, was faithfully performed. Oh, Father, heal the bruised and broken heart of the wife of his youth, now so bereaved and of his loved ones help them to feel he is not dead, only waiting for them within the pearly gates, where loving hearts cannot be severed.

Fallen asleep, oh Father take him
Home thine for eternity
Ye stars bend down from Heavens
dome, watch o’er him tenderly.
A FRIEND.

Weimar Mercury, April 1, 1960, page 1

2nd Stroke Fatal To Judge Holt, 83

Death came at 3:17 a.m. Sunday, March 27, to Judge Lester Holt, 83, who had served the 25th Judicial District the past 38 years and was planning to retire after his present term.

The former Weimar city attorney and Colorado County attorney, who was widely known and highly respected in court circles, died in Nix Hospital at San Antonio, where he had been taken after suffering a stroke March 19 at his Hallettsville home. An operation the following day led to hopes for his recovery, but on March 23 he had a second stroke. Another operation was performed, to no avail.

Licensed in 1900

He had been in pubic service most of the 60 years since he received his law license back in 1900, after studying only six months, and rose to become one of the most respected men in his field. A Houston Chronicle editorial this week pointed out that in his time on the district bench he had “established a record for impartiality and judicial integrity.”

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at St. James Episcopal Church in Hallettsville, with the Rev. Gerald MacAllister officiating. Burial was in the Masonic [Odd Fellows] Cemetery here.

Pallbearers were Judge W. W. Ellison of Gonzales, Dist. Atty. Paul C. Boethel of Hallettsville, Morris Hodges and C. T. Griffin of Columbus, Sam S. Devall and Hans Lunsmann of Hallettsville.

Born at Oakland, a few miles south of here, on Dec. 22, 1876, to Prof. and Mrs. J. W. Holt, and after passing his bar examination in 1900 served as Weimar’s city attorney before becoming county attorney in 1902. He held this office until 1912, when he became district attorney. In 1918 he resumed private practice of law, but four years later he re-entered public office, running on an anti-Ku Klux Klan platform to defeat Charles K. Quinn for the 25th District bench embracing Colorado, Lavaca, Gonzales and Guadalupe Counties. He had held this office continuously since that time, and a few months ago had announced he would retire when his present term ended this spring.

Judge Holt’s first wife, the former Miss Martha Boettcher, died in 1943.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Violet Holt, whom he married in 1956; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Ullrich of Wichita Falls and Mrs. Harold Crump of Houston; two brothers, Ben B. Holt of Weimar and Will Holt of Flatonia; one sister, Mrs. Bettie Hurr of Weimar; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Woman killed in house fire identified

HALLETTSVILLE - The woman killed in a house fire in the Speaks area last week has been identified as Margaret Horkin-Surman, 38, of Speaks. A message was received here from San Antonio yesterday stating that John F. Houchins, of Hallettsville, had died there at 4 o'clock that morning of heart failure. Mr. Houchins had been in San Antonio for some time, having placed himself under treatment of Dr. E. M. Rabb, and roomed with Henry Quota and J. W. Rees of Yoakum. On Thursday morning about 1 o'clock he seized with a fainting spell, but a doctor who was immediately called, declared him out of danger. Mr. Houchins then fell into a deep sleep, from which he awoke at 4 o'clock, when he was seized with another spell and died in a few minutes.

John F. Houchins was born on December 14, 1857, in Austin county, and consequently in the prime of his life when death cut short his career. His father moved to Lavaca county, when John was still a boy, where he has resided ever since. He served as deputy under Sheriff A. J. Smothers from 1883 to November 16, 1885, when he moved to Hallettsville and was appointed constable of precinct 1 to fill the unexpired term of Joe Campion. In 1886 he was again elected constable. In 1888 he was elected sheriff of Lavaca county, and filled his office with such a degree of fearlessness and efficiency that soon made him the terror of all evil doers; but was defeated in the 1898 election by B. G. Bennett.

Mr Houchins leaves a wife and four children, an aged father and mother, several brothers and sisters, and a large number of other relatives, to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathy. His remains will arrive today on the 3 p.m. train and will be laid to rest in the city cemetery at 5 o'clock. Peace to his ashes. —Hallettsville New Era

YOAKUM MAN CHARGED IN FATAL SHOOTING

Halletsville, Texas, May 25. — Ernest Marberger, 27, Yoakum laborer, was in jail here Saturday night charged with the murder of Henry Huebner, 26, Halletsville farmer, at the home of Huebner's sister near Yoakum shortly before midnight Thursday.

Marberger was arrested at his home Friday night by Deputy Sheriff c. C. Buenger after he had left the scene of the shooting in an automobile and later returned.

Called from his bed where he had retired for the night, Huebner was shot to death while he stood in the front yard of the home. A bullet from a .38-caliber pistol pierced the region of his heart, and another penetrated his right side.

Gives Signed Statement.
In a signed statement Saturday afternoon, Marberger said the shooting was caused by jealousy. He declared that Huebner had been attentive to Marberger's estranged wife, who was staying at the home of Huebner's sister, according to county Attorney Paul H. Fertsch.

Immediately following the shooting, Marberger said he raced away in a car to Flatonia where he abandoned the machine and caught a freight train for hearne. After spending the day in Hearne, he returned to Yoakum on a passenger train Friday night, he said.

Marbarger was taken in custody about an hour after his arrival at home, and lodged in the Halletsville jail under a murder charge filed before Justice of the Peace H. W. Strickler.

Funeral Is Held.
County Attorney Fertsch reported that there were no eye-witnesses to the shooting. Marberger's wife and Huebner's sister were awakened by hearing someone shout for Huebner to come outside. Huebner jumped from his bed and walked outside. A few minutes later they heard two shots and then the sound of an automobile racing away, they said.

The women ran outside, Mr. Fertsch said, and found Huebner crumpled on the ground, bleeding profusely from his wounds. He died before they could summon medical aid.

Funeral services for Huebner were held Saturday afternoon.

An examining trial for Marberger will be held before Justice of the Peace Strickler probably Monday, County Attorney Fertsch said.
