Cutting Affray at Yoakum Terminates Fatally

John Janak, a young Bohemian farmer, aged twenty-five, living in Lavaca county, was the victim of a fatal cutting affray Saturday night at a ball in Yoakum. His assailants, all Bohemians, Alvin Targac, aged 20, Raymond Targac, aged 18 years and Joe Kuechler, are under arrest and held in the DeWitt county jail under a charge of murder.

Defendants have retained the firm of Davidson & Bailey, Cuero, Texas in their defense and will be given an examining trial before Justice Criswell at Yoakum next Monday.

The difficulty arose about midnight at the dance hall and is said to have started from a good natured badinage indulged in by the quartette. Finally young Janak stepped from the door and the difficulty ensued, he receiving five knife wounds, one twelve or thirteen inches long, starting under the left ear, two stabs back of the shoulder and two cuts twelve or fifteen inches long across the back. The wounded man was immediately conveyed to the office of a physician, but was found to be dead.

Sheriff Jesse B. Farris was notified by long distance telephone about 1:30 o'clock Sunday morning and immediately went to the scene in an automobile; arriving at the Targac home four miles this side of Yoakum at 3 o'clock, where the [defendants] were held under arrest by the Yoakum city marshal and Deputy Constable Jacobs. The accused men made voluntary surrender. They were conveyed to Cuero Sunday and lodged in jail charged with murder.

Alvin and Raymond Targac were well acquainted with the slain man, while the other defendant, Joe Kuechler, is said to have been a mutual friend of the three. No previous trouble is said to have existed between the men and none were drinking, it is alleged.

Defendants were unaware that Janak was dead until so notified by Sheriff Farris and then showed considerable concern.—Cuero Star.

Father Kills Son, Accident

Johnny Janus, 18 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Janus of Rabbs Switch, was accidentally killed Monday morning at 10 o'clock by gun shot fired from a gun in the hands of his father. The full load struck the victim in the right side of this body and his right hand.

According to Justice of the Peace J.S. Strickler, who was called to the scene of the tragedy to hold and inquest, the elder Janus was squirrel hunting about two or three hundred yards from hi home. The son went to the pecan bottom in quest of pecans and crawled up a tree. The father, seeing only the hand of the boy, thought it to be a squirrel, fired, only to see his son fall out of the tree. A moss thicket which shielded the body of the boy made it impossible for the father to see him. After falling to the ground, Johnny ran back towards the house, but fell shortly before reaching home, dying shortly thereafter. The gun was a single barrel twelve gauge shotgun and the shot that struck the boy was number four bird shot. —Hallettsville New Era-Herald

Johnnie Janush (Janus)

A sad tragedy occured in the Rabbs switch section Monday morning about 10 o'clock when Johnnie Janush only 18 years and 1 week old, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Janush was accidentally shot and killed by his father. Mr. Janush went squirrel hunting and the son was at home when he left, then Johnnie decided to go to the pecan bottom in quest of pecans and crawled up a tree, the father coming back home by there and saw something moving in the tree , seeing only the hand of the boy he thought it was a squirrel and fired a shot, instead of a squirrel, his own son fell to the ground mortally wounded. Johnnie got up and ran over the fence back through the cotton patch towards the house, but fell before reaching home dying shortly thereafter. Johnnie was a fine hardworking lad and has many warm friends in this community all of whom are very much grieved over his tragic and untimely death.

The funeral was held from the family home Tuesday evening with burial in the Vsetin Cemetery where a very large number of sorrowing relatives and friends were present to pay their respects.

The pallbearers were Eman. Vasek, Joe Muenster, Adolph Vavrusa, Alvin Vasek, Frank Filla, and Manual Brown. The flower girls were : Millie Vasek, Josephine Pavel, Lillie Vasek, Annie Vavrusa, Elsie Vasek, Annie Filla, and Hermina Melnar.

He is survived by his heartbroken parents and one sister Mrs. Fred Vasek and many other sorrowing relatives and friends.

We extend sincere sympathy to the grief stricken parents and sister who have suffered the loss of the one that meant so much to their home and lives.

Killed by Mule

Victor Judd, a young man of the Vienna section, was found dead near his home Wednesday afternoon at about 3 o'clock. From what we could learn of young Judd's misfortune, it appearss that he had just finished plowing with a pair of mules and had tied one of the animals and turned the other one loose. A while later his brother Sam found the body of the unfortunate youth with his face down in a small puddle of water near the tied mule. It is presumed that he was kicked by one of the mules as he was found to be bruised about his right eye and the back of his left ear. It is not known whether he was kicked into the water or went there attempting to revive himself. After the body was found, Justice of the Peace E. G. Peterson and Sheriff Gene Houchins were notified and left immediately for the Judd home, but their car stuck before they got there. However, they later held an inquest from the facts as mentioned above and pronounced his death as accidental.

Victor, who had reached the age of 17 years, 1 month and 2 days, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Kay Judd, and was born and reared in the Vienna section. He was a fine, hardworking lad and naturally members of the family as well as his many friends, are grieving very much over his tragic untimely death.

The funeral was held yesterday (Thursday) afternoon from the family home with burial in the Willow Creek Cemetery, Rev. J. T. King officiating. A large number of people were present to pay their last respects.
