FRANK KASPAREK

Weimar Mercury, 30 Jan 1897, page 4

Post Specials: Shiner, Texas, January 23.—Frank Kasparek, a Bohemian farmer living about six miles from here, near Sweet Home, committed suicide by taking poison last night. He was about 50 years of age. No cause is assigned.

Moulton News, 27 Jan 1897

TWO SUICIDES.

Two men grown tired of life died by their own hands this week.

Frank Kasparek, a Bohemian living on McMurray’s land, about four miles south-east of here, took arsenic last Friday night and died in dreadful agony. He climbed up in a loft at his place before dark Thursday eve and swallowed poison, and after waiting awhile he grew impatient because it did not take immediate effect, and climbing back into the loft swallowed some more. By this time his wife and grown son realized what he was doing and took the poison away from him. As he did not get sick at once, a physician was not called for several hours and it was a little after 3 o’clock in the morning when Dr. Mitchel reached the place. He found Kasparek in convulsions and beyond human aid. He died about 4 o’clock. He was given to fits of despondency and was probably mentally unbalanced when the deed was committed. [Mention of L. Finkelstein's suicide in Flatonia followed.]

There is a Frank Kasparek, 1839-Jan 1895 [sic.], born at Frenstat, buried in the Catholic cemetery at Shiner. Jan Uhler, who committed suicide a few months later, is buried next to him. Contributed by Matt Cross

GEORGE KINCHELOE

Weimar Mercury, 19 Apr 1890, page 2

A lively shooting scrape took place about 4 miles east of Sublime at the home of Frank Morris, who resides in Colorado county, about 200 yards beyond the Lavaca county line. Sunday evening, George Kinslow shot George Selph in the shoulder, inflicting a slight wound. Selph and Miss Morrris then grabbed Kinslow and took the gun away from him. Kinslow then started for the house to get a gun, but was headed off by Miss Morris and Selph. Miss Morris took a shotgun loaded with buckshot, and as Kinslow was advancing on her with a dirk she shot him in the face, two shots taking effect in his forehead. Kinslow received another wound in the right side from a winchester ball and the charge of 7 or 8 buck shot in the thigh. Miss Morris and Selph were acting in self defence, Kinslow's aim having been to kill both of them. Officers went to Kinlow's house to arrest him, but condition would not permit. The above particulars were reported to us by an officer who is in a position to learn facts.—Herald.

Weimar Mercury, 19 Apr 1890, page 1

About ten days ago, down on the Fowler place, in this county, a fight took place between George Kinchelow, a Mr. Self and Mrs. Morris, in which a winchester rifle and a double barreled shotgun took part. He leaves a wife and children in very destitute circumstances.

JOSEF KOCUREK

Colorado Citizen, October 18. 1883

Weimar Local Matters

A Bohemian by the name of Josef Kocurek, who lived near here, in what is called the Moravia neighborhood, was killed last Saturday evening by a negro fellow who claims his name is Ed Dunerson. He says his home is on Rabb’s Prairie, Fayette county. The facts as developed at the inquest held over the body of Mr. Kocurek, by W. H. Perry, Esp., are as follows: Some time since the father-in-law of Mr. Kocurek lost a horse supposed to have been stolen. About ten days ago the horse returned., Saturday Mr. Kocurek was at the village of Ammannsville, this negro rode up making inquiry of a horse of the discription[sic] of the one above mentioned. Mr. Kocurek told the negro that a horse of that character was in his neighborhood; and the negro bargained with Mr. Kocurek to give him $2.50 to deliver the horse. Mr. Kocurek then to make sure of the negro’s capture, got a friend,, and both armed with Winchester rifles, went to the pasture where the horse was and took him out. The negro claimed the horse, paid Mr. Kocurek the reward, and started off leading the animal. He was ordered to halt as the horse was claimed by other parties. This frightened the negro who began to run, Mr. Kocurek pursued him on horseback, and in trying to shoot to scare him a cartridge hung in the gun in such a manner that it could not be discharged He then ran up beside the negro and pulled him off his horse. Both parties came to the ground together, and in the scuffle the gun was dropped. The negro picked it up and before Mr. Kocurek could gain his feet the negro clubbed him to death with it, mashed his head to a jelly. The murderer was then captured by Will Ratliff with others, who happened to see the difficulty. The officers were immediately notified and arrived as soon as horse flesh could take them to the scene of the murder, by which time crowds of the murdered man’s neighbors began to gather, and it was with considerable bluff and persuasion that the officers could prevent the murderer from being mobbed. Mr. Kocurek was respected in the neighborhood, was a man of considerable means, about 35 years old. The negro was a young fellow, about 23 or 24 years old. He is now safe in the La Grange jail, and in due time will have justice meted out to him.

KOERTH Child

Weimar Mercury, 5 Oct 1889, page 2

Sweet Home was the scene of a horrible accident last Thursday evening, at about half past five o'clock. The little daughter of C. G. Koerth was playing on the track near the stock pens when a freight train, drawn by engine No. 51, Sam Hopper, engineer, came dashing round the curve, and before they could stop the train the child was run over and horribly mangled. On account of the curve in the road the engineeer did not see the child until it was beyond all human power to stop the engine in time to save its life. The efforts of the fireman to save the victim's life were certainly heroic. The engine had given several shrill whistles, but instead of jumping off the track it seems that the little girl ran into the arms of death by starting to run straight down the track. Seeing that there was no possible chance for reversing the engine in time, the fireman ran out on the cowcatcher and made a grab for the child, but without avail, for the giant locomotive was stronger than he, and jerked the poor girl under the wheels and ground her to death. In his bold attempt the fireman narrowly escaped being thrown under the wheels himself, and sustained several painful injuries. The Herald extends sincere condolence to the bereaved family.—Herald.

DEATH.

Death is hovering over J. F. Kopecky as the GAZETTE forms close, and before the GAZETTE reaches its readers he will have passed from life unto death. A few days ago he was apparently on the rapid road to recovery and it was so announced in these columns. SHOOTING AFFRAY.

At Komensky school house Sunday night, between Moulton and Moravia, a difficulty arose between E. J. Jalufka and a young man and Jalufka fired at the latter. Deputy Sheriff Louis Krasta was near by and attempted to arrest Jalufka. It seems that when they ran together each threw down his gun and the weapons crashed and were discharged. Jalufka received a slight wound in the forehead from a bullet while Krasta received what is considered at this writing to be a fatal wound. Jalufka left for Halletsville Monday morning to give himself up. Jalufka is postmaster and general merchant at Moravia.

Louis Krasta, what was shot through the brain by Deputy Sheriff Jalufka at a school house between Moulton and Moravia one night last fall, died Monday night. It is reported that his death resulted from riding a wild horse, the horse pitched with him and the wound in his brain was re-opened. His case had created wide-spread interest, as he was shot directly through the brain behind the eyes, and a large amount of brain matter escaped from the wound. He was nursed back to life and it was thought that he was alright. His death was in the nature of a surprise to everyone.

Neighborhood Notes

A Few Breezy, Interesting Item Culled from Our Exchanges

Houston Post Special: Hallettsville, Texas, January 21.—This morning at 8 o’clock John Kubes was found in an unconscious condition in the back room of a saloon where he had a shoe shop. Drs. Lay and Newberry were summoned. They had decided that he had taken morphine and decide to try and save him. Although they worked faithfully he died this afternoon about 2 o’clock.  Kubes had for several months run a lunch stand in one of the saloons here, but had been discharged for getting drunk. He had a shoe shop, but did not work in it himself, having an old Irish man to do the work and it was he who yesterday bought for him 25 cents worth of morphine. It is not known when he took it.

Several parties who slept in the room where he was found this morning say he was down on the floor last night, but that they did not want to disturb him, supposing him to be drunk.

He was a native of Bohemia, but had been in America for many years and served in the Federal army during the late war and later was a soldier at San Antonio. He has also lived in Denver, Colo. So far as known he has no relatives. As he has no property he will be buried by the county.
