Loyd Edwin Matzke was born March 31, 1937 in Pattison, Waller County. The son of William David Matzke and Luvena Wenzel Matzke, he grew up and attended the Pattison School system until his graduation in 1956. Services for Mr. Matzke were conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10, at First Baptist Church of Brookshire with the Rev. David Newberry officiating. Pallbearers were Oliver Kitzman, Jack Diezi, Ken Cockroft, Tom Shields, Charles Neuman, Julian Wisniski, and John Hamersman. Loyd served his country in the United States national Guard Reserves from may 14, 1957 until his honorable discharge on May 13, 1963. On December 23, 1961, loyd married Lois Nichols. They were married for 20 years. Loyd was employed as a maintenance worker for the texas Highway Department in hempstead and Brookshire, retiring in 1993 after 34 years of service. He loved bird watching and collecting post cards. He also enjoyed deer hunting and often spoke of his deer camp "Rainbow." For the past few years, he had enjoyed traveling with his nephews Flin McGehee and his wife, Mary Francis. A loving father to his children, and a dedicated Christian, he had a close personal relationship with God. He was a member of the First Babtist Church in Brookshire where he was ordained as a Deacon in 1973 and served as a Greeter on Sunday mornings. Loyd spent his last days doing what he loved most -- working at his deer camp. He was 68 years old. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law: Brenda and Scott Pockat of Rogers, Arkansas and Susan and Tommy Guthmann of Columbus; grandchildren: Kimberly and Mikayla Pockat of Roger, Ark., Lauren and Lesley Guthmann of Columbus; Grandchildren: Kimberly and Mikayla Pockat of Rogers, Arkansas, Lauren and Lesley Guthmann of Columbus; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Pete and Wilbert, and sister Evelyn. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home, Brookshire. Posted by Joy Neely
