Funeral services for Joel Frank Cheely, 80, of Bellville, were held Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at 11 a.m. from St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville with the Rev. David Henske and the Rev. Jennie Jones co-officiating. Interment was at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Bellville. Serving as pallbearers were Don Cassling, Don Lawrence, Billy Boyett, Bill Gabig, Bob Mead and Dave Pernell. Frank was born in Culverton, Ga. on Sept. 19, 1925 to Seaborn Ralph and Ollie Todd Cheely. Frank spent his boyhood in Georgia and Florida. He served in the Army in Europe and the Philippines during WWII and returned to graduate from Georgia Tech with a degree in chemical engineering. Frank married Echo in Baton Rouge. La. on June 17,1950. He had a long and successful career as a chemical engineer, retiring from Exxon Chemical in 1982. Frank's career required many moves around the country. Frank and Echo have made their home in Baton Rouge, in Pennsylvania, in New Jersey and in Houston. In 1974 they settled in Bellville and have enjoyed 30 years of small town living. Frank enjoyed a happy life devoted to his wife Echo, his children and his grandchildren. He also truly enjoyed the time he spent in the company of his dear friends. Frank had a kind and generous heart and was an active leader, volunteer and supporter of many worthy organizations in Bellville including the Bellville Historical Society. Joel Frank Cheely died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005 at his home in Bellville. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Echo Price Cheely of Bellville, his son Joel Cheely Jr. of Manlius, N.Y., his daughter, Karen Pernell and husband David of Austin, his beloved grandchildren, Kimberly, Mallory and Dylan and many nieces and nephews and other loving relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents. Seaborn and Ollie Cheely, three brothers, and two sisters. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Bellville Boys and Girls Club, c/o P.O.
