Mateja
Edward Joseph Mateja was born in Bellville on Oct. 4, 1949 and died in San Felipe on March 9, 2009.
Ed grew up in San Felipe where he and his family farmed cotton and other crops. He was a man with
an amazing work ethic which he carried with him throughout his life.
He graduated from Sealy High School where he played for the Sealy Tiger football team.
He worked for Austin County for quite a few years and later for Koy Concrete. Recently, he ran his
own business, Fences by Ed Mateja.
Ed loved and appreciated the gifts and beauty of nature. Never far from the Brazos River, he spent
countless hours in the woods with his beloved English Coonhounds. He will be remembered for his unique sense of humor, his warmth, sincerity, and undying loyalty
to the people he cared about.
He leaves his wife, Marianne, his children Ted and Amanda, two step children, Mandi Powell and
Marti Brown, three sisters, Barbara Kmiec, Doris Starkey, and Dee Herman, his aunt, Mildred Blakey, many nieces and nephews and countless friends. He was preceded
in death by his brother Frank, Jr. and his parents Frank and Martha Mateja.
Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at the Schmidt Funeral Home in
Bellville.
Graveside service was at 10a.m., Thursday, March 12, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with
Father Thuy Nguyen officiating.
