Richard W. Mewis Dies on Monday
Funeral rites were held at 10 a.m. yesterday at the Pete E.
Etlinger Funeral home chapel for Richard W. Mewis, 73, widely
known Austin county native and farmer, who died at his home on
RFD 1 Monday, Sept. 3, at 9:30 a.m.
Officiating were the Rev. Ralph E. Dille and the Rev. Gus Moore.
Pallbearers were Hubert Frank, Robert Blum, Harry Mewis, Earl
Mewis, Robert Buntzel and Hubert Buntzel. Interment was at Oak
Knoll.
Mr. Mewis was born Nov. 7, 1877, in the Burleigh community,
member of a large and prominent farm and ranch family. On Sept.
30, 1900, he was married to Miss Adele Brockman in Bellville. He
engaged in farming until failing health forced his partial
retirement 20 years ago.
Surviving are 45 immediate relatives, including his widow; five
daughters, Mrs. Arno E. Frank, Mrs. Elda Hoff, Mrs. Otto Falk
and Mrs. Max Kaliszewski, all of Bellville, and Mrs. George
Bender of Brenham; six sons, Roland, Gilbert, Reuben and Marvin
Mewis of Bellville, Roman Mewis of Texas City and Delmus Mewis
of La Grange; two sisters Mrs. Emil Seyer and Mrs. Eric Buntzel
of Bellville; four brothers, A. E., Herman, Walter and Bennie
Mewis, all of Bellville; 22 grandchildren, and five
great-grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Two brothers
and one sister preceded him in death.
