George B. Tait and his twin brother David H. Tait of Nova Scotia, were in living and working in the Boston area in 1898 when President McKinley called for volunteers to step foward to support the military effort in the Spanish American War. They answered the call and joined the 5th Infantry of the Massachusetts Volunteers for the United-Spanish War. They were sent to Mare Island, California to serve as troopers aboard the USS Bennington (PG-4) in the Philippine Islands and elsewhere in the Pacific Theater of the war (Guam and Wake Island). They both achieved the rank of CPL. |
