What is the African American Genealogical & Historical Society (AAGHS) of San Antonio, Inc.?
Founded in September 1992, it was organized with the primary objective of promoting and stimulating
an interest in family history and genealogical research by African Americans.
Who are its members? The AAGHS was organized by a small group of interested genealogists who
recognized the importance of sharing resources to overcome historical barriers to research as well as a
desire to preserve African American history in the community. Membership is open to the public.
How can the AAGHS help me? The AAGHS occasionally features guest lecturers who are
authorities on Black history and research. Members will be introduced to step by step methods of
genealogical research to explore their own family tree.
What are the goals of the AAGHS? To enhance local access to African American history and
genealogical resources. To create a network of persons who share the same or similiar research
interests. To organize and index genealogical information for research and preservation for future reference.
When does the AAGHS meet? Meetings are currently being held on the first Saturday of each
month, 10:00 A.M. at the San Antonio Central Library, 600 Soledad, on the 6th floor, telephone
