DEVILBISS
John Wesley DEVILBISS was the first Methodist minister to preach in San Antonio. He wrote that in April 1844 there was
a mill eight miles below the city of San Antonio at which he found Mr. KERR and Mr. HIGGINBOTHAM, builders and
proprietors of this mill. "Mr. Kerr was a strict member of our church and with his wife and sister-in-law, Miss Martha Ann
HIGGINBOTHAM, were the only Methodists then living in the area." When he was appointed to the San Antonio mission
station, he found no convenient house in town, but rented a house seven miles below, in the neighborhood of Kerr &
Higginbotham's mill. The preacher tells how he preached in the neighborhood where he lived, at Brother Wm. P. Kerr's.
He also organized a class meeting there. The first members are listed as Mr. Wm. P. Kerr and wife, Miss Martha Ann
Higginbotham, Mrs Tabitha Ann Devilbiss, Mr. W.G. Cotton and wife, and Gustavus Elly, and Martha Lucinda Kerr, who
joined on probation. In 1847 he was married to Martha Lucinda Kerr, a daughter of William P. Kerr. Roderick Toliver
Higginbotham was Martha Ann's brother, and the other mill owner. If William P. Kerr, who owned the mill, was Martha
Ann Higginbotham's brother-in-law, was his wife Martha Ann's sister? William P. Kerr's wife in 1850 was Rachel. Had he
been married before to Polly Higginbotham? Can anyone shed any light on this mystery? Will swap data on

MORGAN
We're searching for birth & death dates on Tex Barney MORGAN who was born in San Antonio in 1901 or 1902. While
he was still an infant, his parents were killed when their house caught fire. A good samaritan happened by, and seeing that
the parents were dead, took the little baby boy and raised him. We do not know if MORGAN is the name of the good
samaritan man or Tex's true surname. We do know that Tex's caregiver was a cattle rustler, that they lived in the country,
and that Tex received no education until he was 20. At that time, he decided he wanted to learn to read and write, and we
believe he finished his education in 3 years (possibly thru the 8th grade). The 1920 & 1920 Census records have been
checked for him, and nothing came up under Tex Barney MORGAN. As an adult, Tex was a forest ranger, but finding no
work in San Antonio, he moved to Seattle, WA, where he worked in a saw mill. He later was a teamster (horses), working
on Empire Way. He was white, 6' ½" tall, wore a size 16 shoe, and had brown hair with a reddish tint. Apparently he was
also a religious man. While in WA, he married Florence Grace Fithian JOHNSON and they lived on 9918 57th Avenue
South in Seattle. They had two daughters: Frances Elsie (04/04/27) and Shirley Lorraine (08/23/28). On Frances' birth
certificate, Tex is listed at age 28, Florence at age 29 (she was from Lansing, MI). The couple divorced when Frances was
around 4 or 5 years old, and Tex moved back to San Antonio. A man came to Florence's door, saying that Tex had died
and left her some money, to which she replied, "Well then it must not be the Tex I know!" and sent the man away; so they
never really knew what became of Tex. Frances "Frankie" would appreciate ANY info relating to her father Tex B.
MORGAN. Please email me at bathrobe1@juno.com with any comments and I will see that they get to my great aunt
Frankie. assistance.

on 1860 Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co. Census Almond MORGAN age 2) is the s/o
Alvin MORGAN b. ca. 1839/42 LA and Eliza Meyer/Myers b. ca. 1836 LA. The
city of Alvin, TX was named for Alvin MORGAN but very little is known about
him before he came to Brazoria County in 1872. His obituary listed four
children, only one was mentioned by name in his obituary with "three" other
children residing in LA. William Alva MORGAN married Isabello/Isabel/Isabella
Curbelo 15 April 1901 Kerr Co., TX. This marriage is also listed by another
reseacher as Isabel Adeline Corbello b. 21 May 1884 married William Alva
MORGAN. The MORGAN family is listed in Kerr Co. TX census records in 1920.
According to Joan Copeland on Conroe (Curbelo researcher) they had eight
children some born after the 1920 census. I believe some of the William
& Isabella MORGAN family may still be living in or around Kerr or Bexar
Counties. William Alva MORGAN is from my GF MORGAN's first marriage and
I am from my GF MORGAN's second marriage. He was married three times and
had thirteen children that I have found. William was his first son. Would
appreciate any help in locating members of this MORGAN family and any assistance
on the MORGAN/CURBELO ancestors. Ruth

Mother also had baby boy in 63 or 64, that was given up for adoption. The

UNKNOWN SURNAME
My mother was born on March 21st,
1920 in San Antonio, TX. She was adopted at the age of 6 weeks old. It
is said that her father was the son of the minister at a Methodist church
in San Antonio and her mother was a singer in their choir. My mother was
adopted by the SALISBURYs. Mr. Salisbury was in the Army at the time. We
know that her adopted mother had requested information from the District
Attorney's office in October 1929 and received a letter back stating that
a Mrs. Mary E. Wilson at 205 Melrose in San Antonio would be able to provide
the answer. No one ever followed up on that lead. My mother had always
felt "incomplete" not knowing of her biological family. I would assume
that there were not that many Methodist churches in 1920. The information
about her parents came by way of one of her adoptive mother's relatives.
Does anyone have any information? Jack

UNKNOWN SURNAME
I am looking for information on homes for unwed
mothers and/or orphanages in Bexar County in the years 1940-1945. I was
taken from one of these places somewhere between the years 1943 and 1945.
I was born in 1943 and have reason to believe it was in Bexar County as
that is where the adoption procedures took place. I found there was an
establishment called the Salvation Army Home for unwed Mothers, but can
not find any further information on it. I can not find any information
on any other establishment that may have provided for children on a daily
basis. I really need some help on this and I would forever thankful for
any and all information you can give me. I thank you for your time and
consideration in this matter. Margaret

GOMEZ
I am searching for any information on Jose Angel
GOMEZ, born c. 1820 and died on 11-24-1897 and is buried at San Fernando
Cemetery #1 in San Antonio, TX. He was married to Teresa de los SANTOS
COY in 1855 and she died 1-16-1890 and is buried with him. Jose Angel GOMEZ
is listed in the San Antonio City Directory of 1891 as being a "Ranchman"
and living at 1025 N. Laredo Street. It is my opinion that Jose Angel GOMEZ
had a brother named Silverio GOMEZ and two sisters, Crisanta GOMEZ (married
1st Pedro JIMENEZ, 2nd Miguel SUNIGA) and Pilar GOMEZ
(married 1st Jose Maria CASTILLION and 2nd Antonio
HERRERA). The siblings all lived either in San Antonio, Losoya, and Graytown,
Texas. Jose Angel GOMEZ and his wife Teresa had the following children:
Maria Y. GOMEZ (married to Manuel CADENA), Guadalupe GOMEZ (married to
Andres LOPEZ), Jesus GOMEZ (married to Antonia HURON), Maria de Candelaria
GOMEZ (married to Ramon CASTILLO), Santos GOMEZ (married to Maria de Jesus
CADENA, Gertrudes GOMEZ (married to Miguel GARCIA), and Paula GOMEZ (never
married). Robert Garcia
GROSS, HABERMANN
Looking for information on Susanna Gerber GROSS,
wife of Richard GROSS and their children and descendants. She was born
22 April 1834 in Sainte Marie aux Mines, Alsace. She married Richard 12
Feb 1863 in Guebwiller. Richard died 5 June 1890 and is buried in St. Peter
& Paul Cemetery in New Braunfels, Comal Co., TX. Their daughter, Louise
Josephine, married Albert Frederich HABERMANN. I believe that Richard and
daughter Josephine are the GROSS family listed as arriving in NY 12 Jul
1882 from Bremen. She is listed with her children: Jakob 17, Josepha 11,
Elisabeth 8 and Anna 7. According to marriage registered in Sainte Marie
aux Mines as 27 Sept. 1857. I think this child died before Richard &
Susanna came to US. My mother, Sylvia Popp Haymes remembers Susanna, her
great grandmother, always wore a white apron and cap, and that she always
had a nickel in her pocket for her great-granddaughter. My mother believes
she moved to San Antonio around 1921 to live with one of her children and
died and was buried in San Antonio some time after. Any information on
Susanna and her descendants would be greatly appreciated. Pam
