E.H. Carter

E.H. (Ebinezer “Ebner Hezekiah) CARTER was born ca. 1819 in Wayne County, Tennessee, died 1867 in Caldwell, TX.

He came to Texas in September 1841 with his sister, Mary Jane CARTER who later married Dr. Alfred Young Lothlin, also originally from Wayne County, Tennessee. 

E.H. married Rebecca Rice.  He was elected Tax Assessor-Collector of Burleson County and served until August 15, 1865 (when P.C. Hood was appointed to replace him due to civil government restructuring following the Civil War). 

E.H. CARTER died ca. 1867 of tuberculosis.  After his death, his land became the county poor farm.

Children of E.H. CARTER and Rebecca Rice:

  1. David M. CARTER; died young – lived to be at least 13yrs. old – last listed in the 1860 census.
  2. Laban Rice CARTER; b. 9-14-1848; d. 10-16-1898; married Mary Ann Boswell; 8 children: Ira Jefferson, Annette ”Nettie”May, Joseph Walker, Edna Elizabeth, Lillie Bertha, David McCollum, Alfonso “Al”, Ibra Vernon.
  3. Lucy CARTER; b. 1851 married Robert Pollock.  2 children: Harry, Clara

  4. Martha Lutitia (married James M. Hervey Rouse)
