From: "Robin Webb-Lucas" Subject: Family Group Sheets/Webb Descendants of Sir Henry Webb Generation No. 1 1. SIR HENRY1 WEBB was born May 15, 1350 in Warwickshire, England. Notes for SIR HENRY WEBB: The WEBB family was originally from Dorset, one of the shires in England. For nearly two hundred years, the WEBBs had resided in this place before Sir. Alexander Webb, Jr and his family went to the Americas. The brothers had become quite wealthy. They sold their estate in England for a large sum of money, prior to their departure. This English property was inherited through their ancestor, Sir Henry Alexander Webb. A copy of the letter which Catherine Parr sent her council (Cabinet Members) asking them to grant her beloved friend, Sir Henry Webb, the lands and estates that had been mentioned for him, is still in existence. These lands had been confiscated by the King at the suppression of the monasteries and were located in Dorsetshire, England. In later years, these lands became of value to the children who came to America. Sir Henry Alexander Webb was usher to the Privy Council of Catherine Parr, Queen Regent of Britian in the 16th century. Catherine Parr, 6th Queen of Henry VIII of England, tactful, kindly women, to whose influence her stepchildren, the future sovereigns Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I owed much. Among the few exsisting documents connected with the regency of Catherine Parr was one while Henry VIII was conducting the seige of Boulogne in 1544 AD. There is in the Crotonain Collections, a letter to her council, headed: Katherine, Queen Regent, K.P.; "In favor of her trusty and well beloved servant, Henry Alexander Webb, gentlemen, usher of her Privy Chamber". The letter is in regard to some grants and privileges to Henry Alexander Webb, but which had not been fulfilled. It concludes, "we most heartly desire and pray you to be favorable to him at this our earnest request. Given under my Hand and Signet at my Lord, the King's Majesty's Honor of Hampton court, the 23rd of July and the 36th year of his Highness most noble Reign". Child of SIR HENRY WEBB is: 2. i. SIR HENRY ALEXANDER7 WEBB (SIRJOHN ALEXANDER6, JOHN ALEXANDER5, WILLIAM4, JOHN3, GOEFREY2, SIR HENRY1) was born May 11, 1510 in Stratford, Warwick, England, and died 1544 in England. He married GRACE ARDEN 1533 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England, daughter of THOMAS ARDEN. She was born 1512 in Wilcote, Warwickshire, England, and died December 03, 1539 in Windsor, Hartfordshire, England. Notes for SIR HENRY ALEXANDER WEBB: It is said that Sir. Henry Webb established the family for all future times, since to him the coat of arms, was granted. This heraldic ensigna of rank in the New Nobility, that of the Thegus, owe their orgin in personal service to the prince then reigning. The new Nobility was accordingly one of office due to meritiorous service. The device of hereditary coat of armour, a growth of the twelfth century, did much to define and mark out the noble class throughout Europe. When once acquired by grant of the Sovereign, it went on from generation to generation. They who possessed the right of coat of armour formed the class of nobility or gentry. She married ROBERT ARDEN Abt. 1530 in Warwickshire, England, son of THOMAS ARDEN. He was born 1497 in Wimlcote, Warwickshire, England, and died December 16, 1556 in Warwickshire, England. Notes for ROBERT ARDEN: Facts on the Shakespeare, Webb and Arden families were taken from "William Shakespeare; A Biolgraphy" by A.L. Rowse. 1963. This biography confirms that the Arden family was a well known and large family in Wilmcote and that John Shakespeare was a "ner-do-well" who was oftened fined for not showing up for doing his duty as baliff or alderman, or mayor, and who vouched for other people's debts as well as accumulating his own. He lost all his money and standing in the community. Even when William began to make money, debt plauged his father for the rest of his life. John Shakespeare could not read or write, but had aspirations to be a nobleman and applied to the Herald's College for a Coat of Arms. The grant was not accepted and put through until after John's death, when William pursued the matter. The Coat and Crest were granted on October 20, 1596. By the time of the birth of their son, James Franklin "Jim" Webb, David and family were living in Guadalupe Co., Tx. (Info taken from bible of Anna Frances Sorrell Webb; owned by Tyre Ann Brown Wells, granddaughter of Onie Ella Webb Brown) Fanny listed their children as Anna Frances, Mary Alice, William Madison, James Franklin, Onie Ella and Ernest Jefferson. I find it enteresting that my greatgrandfather is named as James "Franklin", as he named his son, James "Frank", Jr. I feel it is probable that the Franklin was shortend to "Frank" as D.F. was refered to as "Frank" in several articles in the Gonzales newspapers. Also of note; Fanny listed the birth of her first grandchild, son of James, as being named "Thomas Franklin B. Webb". The custom of the time was to name the oldest son after both grandfathers, and it is quite possible that our Tom Brown Webb was given both of his grandfather's names at birth- Thomas Brown, after his maternal grandfather, and Franklin after David F. Webb David, wife Fanny and children are enumerated in Guadalupe Co., Tx 1900 cencus; Precinct 5; Ed. 69; Household 191-192. pg 304A. David and family moved to Caldwell Co., Tx. soon after Ernest's birth; settling first near the San Marcos River, where they lived until 1925. Records of this land's sales to G.C. Walker are recorded in Caldwell Co, Tx. vol 103, pg. 64 recorded 9-July-1925, and to W.P. Walker, Vol. 103 pg 64 recorded 9-July-1925. There are other records of Land sales by D.F. and/or Fanny, are recorded in Caldwell Co. records. Will of D. F.
