    Alto City Cemetery is located of HWY 69 on

Rusk Street 1/4 mile on the right in Alto, Texas.

Robert F. Mitchell Mitchell founded Alto on highest point between Angelina and Neches Rivers. He was a veteran of the Mexican War of 1846, he bore the title of "Colonel" the rest of his life. He married Mrs. Tabitha McKnight Matthews of Douglas, TX 1851. The couple gave land for numerous public uses. She is buried beside her husband in Alto cemetery. They operated a store, hotel, stage stop, and other businesses in Alto.  Texas Historical Commission Marker
