"EARLY INFORMATION ON THE GEORGE FAMILY OF CHEROKEE AND ANDERSON
COUNTIES" by Bettye Collier Smith
There is a strong possibility that Jesse George b:1760, of
Orangeburg District, S.C., later Barnwell County, S.C., was a
brother or cousin of Gotlieb George, b:1760, and Ludwig (Lewis)
George, b:c1756. Gotlieb George states in his revolutionary War
pension application that he was born in Switzerland; he was of
Swiss German stock.
Jake, Jesse, Gotlieb and Ludwig (Lewis) George were all of
Orangeburg District, S.C. When the county of Lexington was
formed in 1804, from Orangeburg District, Gotlieb was in the
newly formed county. Jesse and Ludwig (Lewis) were in the
newly formed county of Barnwell, formed in 1798, from Orangeburg
District, S.C.
From "German Settlements and the Lutheran Church in the
Carolinas" by Bernham, pgs 99-131, especially pg 102, we find -
"These German and Swiss settlers did not all arrive in Orangeburg
at the same time...........that emigrants(sic) from Germany
arrived in Orangeburg District as late as 1769, only a few years
before the revolution." Also mentioned are "Swiss reformed
(Calvinist) and Swiss Lutherans".
