NEW SUMMERFIELD - About 150 mourners came to First Baptist Church in New
Summerfield Thursday night to grieve for their loved ones Michael Smith, 26,
Robert Loughmiller, 16, and John Wesley Gartman, 14.
The young men were killed Tuesday night in a plane crash near Armstrong, Texas
in Kenedy County.
“The community is hurting, but the people are coming together to do what they
need to do,” First Baptist Church Pastor Donny Sadler said. “We are actually
holding up pretty well.”
The church will be open for anyone wishing to talk to a pastor or anyone else
who can help with their grief until 7 p.m. Friday. Visitations begin at 6 p.m.
at Autrey Funeral Home (the young men’s obituaries are on page 3 of today’s
Jacksonville Daily Progress).
Many people availed themselves of the opportunity to talk openly about the hurt
they feel for the loss of Smith, Gartman and Loughmiller during a service at the
church that began at 7 p.m.
Fifteen Baptist pastors from churches throughout East Texas attended the service
and will be available to help mourners during the trying days ahead, Rev. Sadler
said.
The young men were all from New Summerfield and members of the church and its
youth group, which Smith led. Smith was the son of Joe and Betty Lou Smith of
Jacksonville, owners of Joe Smith Plant Farm.
“The Smith family goes back several generations in Cherokee County,” Rev. Sadler
said.
Friends stayed long after the service was over Thursday night to console each
other.
At the time of the accident, the plane was traveling from Weslaco to
Jacksonville. Authorities believe the airplane crashed at approximately 9:30
p.m.
The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the
National Transportation Safety Board. The cause of the accident is unknown at
this time.

Donald Lyndon Box
Donald Lyndon Box, life-long firefighter, Christian servant and raconteur, died
Friday, January 5, in Rusk, Texas, at the age of 91. Before he retired in 1980,
after 33 years with the Fort Worth Fire Department, school children throughout
the city knew him as “Fireman Box” for his lively safety demonstrations.
Baptized in a country creek by Foy E. Wallace at the age of 10, Mr. Box served
as a deacon in every church he attended before he moved to Rusk in 1989. He
served as an elder of the Rusk Church of Christ for more than a decade.
Born May, 13, 1915, in Dublin, Texas, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp
as a firefighter in 1933. While attending North Texas State Teachers College
from 1935 to 1939, he volunteered at the Denton Fire Department. He became fire
chief at North American Aviation in 1941. During World War II, he served as a
firefighter in the U.S. Army Air Force at Love Field, then in the U.S. Army at
Fort Hood until the war ended.
He served as a firefighter for 17 years at the Fort Worth Fire Department before
he took on the role of fire safety officer for the schools, hospitals, rest
homes, church schools and day care centers. His photo often appeared in the Fort
Worth Star Telegram with his faithful dalmatian dog, Cinderella Sparky, who
helped with his demonstrations.
Trained in carpentry by his father, Mr. Box bought many old homes for his family
and remodeled and sold them to supplement his salary as a firefighter and
support his large family.
After retiring in 1980, he and his wife, Mattie, opened Romance Antiques near
Romance, Ark. They sold the store in 1989 and traveled in eight states,
conducting antique shows while operating booths in antique malls in Little Rock,
Palestine and Rusk.
Known for his large family, Mr. Box was a strong family man and loved to brag
about his eight children and tell stories about his ancestors’ escapades in
moving through the southern states to settle in Texas.
A lover of people, Mr. Box made friends almost instantly wherever he went, from
the grocery store clerk or gas station attendant to neighbors and church
visitors. He was notorious for making his wife and children wait in the car
during trips while he carried on a long visit with someone he had just met while
asking directions or making a purchase.
Always active in church wherever he lived, he taught Bible classes, visited the
sick and lonely, drove people to church services, conducted evangelistic
training sessions, participated in mission outreaches, kept orphans and needy
children in his home and adopted an abandoned deaf child. After moving to Rusk
at the age of 75, he and his wife continued to visit the sick and elderly until
prevented in the last two years due to failing health.

Ma is survived by her daughter, Peggy W. Davis of Tyler and her daughter-in-law,
Joanne Wilson of Dallas; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and her
nephew, Jimmie Crysup of New Orleans, Louisiana. Many relatives and friends
mourning her loss are legion.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Claude “Pa” Wilson and
their son, Claude D. “Danny” Wilson of Dallas, and her son-in-law Jimmie I.
Davis, also of Dallas.
Reevel and her little brother J.W. did some of their growing up in sawmill camps
in East Texas while their daddy worked for a lumber company. During the First
World War, Reevel attended high school in Houston. Her family then moved to
Jacksonville. She met her future husband here when Claude had a flat on a Model
T in front of her family’s house and he asked to use the phone. Claude and
Reevel were married in 1924 and lived and worked in Mixon and Bullard until they
settled permanently in Jacksonville in 1941. For a time Ma worked as a clerk for
the Jacksonville Cotton Compress. Ma then went to work for Gragard, Spraggins
and Swofford Funeral Home. She worked with the company for 28 years, as it
changed to Thompson-Elliott and finally Thompson Funeral Home. Here she handled
the company’s insurance office for her good friend of many years, Chuck
Thompson.
Ma’s house was always a happy place. There was always plenty of home cooking
(especially pies) and good company. She and Pa kept horses for the grandkids and
were founding members of the Jacksonville Riders Club. In the early years of the
Tops in Texas Rodeo, Ma helped look after such stars as Michael Landon, Ken
Curtis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Ma loved good times, but when she played dominoes,
she played to win. After Pa’s death, Ma drove on like a good Christian, enjoying
life, her family and friends. She traveled widely in America and Europe,
including a visit to the divided city of West Berlin, Germany. From the 1970s
into the 21st century she was very active in the Mary-Martha Sunday School class
at Central Baptist, the Daughters of the Nile, Order of the Eastern Star, the
Daughters of the American Revolution and the Jacksonville Garden Club. She
leaves a legacy of love that will survive through her descendents long after her
century on this earth.
Visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Thompson Funeral Home
in Jacksonville. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 10,
