ANGELA DERON LEVY
 

Memorial service for Angela Deron Levy, 52, was held March 16 at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Corsicana. She died March 13, 2007. She was born Dec. 8, 1954, in Rusk.

Mrs. Levy was an art teacher, camp director for Campfire and later worked as a registered midwife. She owned the Orendé Cultural Art Center in Corsicana.

Survivors are her husband of 26 years, Harold Levy; three daughters and two sons, Amber Levy of Huntsville, Scarlett Levy, Zoe Levy, John and Ben Levy, all of Blooming Grove; her parents, Lum and Mary Alyce Parsons of Rusk; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sylyna and Keith Kennedy of Tyler and DeAnna Briley of Rusk; and several nieces and nephews.

   LYNN MARIE BANKS
     

Funeral for Lynn Marie Marshall Banks, 84, of Rusk, was at 3 p.m. Monday at First Church on the Hill with the Rev. Jan Pate officiating. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home. Mrs. Banks died on April 6, 2007. She was born May 2, 1922.

Mrs. Banks was a longtime resident of Rusk where she was active for many years in business. She worked as a manager with Sears-Roebuck at many locations including Dallas, Kilgore, Longview, Palestine, Jacksonville, and as manager of the local Rusk Sears store for more than 10 years. She managed the Rusk Pine Meadow Apartments for another 10 years followed by an equal time at the Department of Human Services until her retirement in 2002. Also as a volunteer, she was elected and served as president of the local HUD organization for several years. She was the first woman to serve on the Rusk Independent School District Board. She was a member of the First Church on the Hill. Along with her late husband, Lewis Banks, she was a strong supporter in local politics, attending and participating in the Democratic Convention for many years. She has always been "around the courthouse" helping to count votes, or just keeping up with the political races "first hand." Preceding her in death were her husband, Lewis Banks; her father and mother, Charles W. and Ewing Marshall; and two brothers, Charles R. and Johnny Marshall.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Bob and Martha Banks of Richardson, Judy Ramey and Diann and Jerry Don Norton, all of Rusk; 10 grandchildren Robin and husband Kret Townsend of Round Rock, Debra and husband Mike Dominy of Alto, Sherry and husband Greg Dover of Rusk, Ronda and husband Denny McIntyre of Rusk, Shannon and husband Jim Myers of McKinney, Steven Norton and wife April of Rusk, Jason Ramey and wife Monica of Houston, Keith Norton and wife Amy of Rusk, Lynn and husband Josh West of Alto and Scott Ramey and wife Elizabeth of Conroe; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; two nieces, Karen Taylor of Bullard and Kathy Marshall of San Luis Obisbo, Calif. Graveside service for Lila Eukela Selman, 84, of Alto was at 3 p.m. Sunday at Old Palestine Cemetery with the Rev. Odis Bryan officiating under the direction of O.T. Allen & Son Funeral Home. Mrs. Selman died April 5, 2007. She was born Nov. 29, 1919, in Atoy to Mark and Catherine Sessions Adams. She lived most of her life in Alto and was a member of the Old Palestine Baptist Church.

 She worked on a poultry farm, raised cattle and at Lufkin State School. Preceding her in death were her first husband, James McLain in 1972: a sister, Catherine Murphy; and her second husband, William Selman in 1994. Survivors are a step-son and daughter-in-law, J.C. and Helen Selman of Alto; two nephews and their wives, Mark and Caroline Murphy of Sugar Land and James and Adeline Murphy of Jay, Fla. and numerous other nephews and nieces.

Funeral for Frankie Pippin, 102, of Jacksonville was at 2 p.m. March 26, 2007 at Autry Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. James Blaylock and the Rev. Wayne Thompson officiating. Burial was in Meador Cemetery. Mrs. Pippin died March 23, 2007. She was born March 15, 1905, in the Turney community. She was a retired employee of Peacock Crate Factory and a homemaker.

She was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Bonnie Pippin; a daughter, Joyce Nell Sanford and a grandson, Larry Sanford.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Nelda Pippin of Jacksonville; three daughters and four sonsin law, Mary Lynn and Homer Higgins, Nancy and Wayne Thompson, Patsy and Jerry Wood and Jimmie Sanford, all of Jacksonville; and nine grandchildren, Brent Thompson, David Pippin, Don Littlejohn, Jay Sanford, Michael Pippin, Chris Wood, Janis Reed, Donna Littlejohn and Susan Wood.

Memorial service for Berryman (Pete) Pavletich, 89, of Jacksonville was at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church with Father Rob Godwin presiding. Burial was in Still Waters Memorial Gardens. Mr. Pavletich died April 5, 2007. He was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Alto. Memorial service for Berryman (Pete) Pavletich, 89, of Jacksonville was at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church with Father Rob Godwin presiding. Burial was in Still Waters Memorial Gardens.

He graduated from Jacksonville High School and attended Lon Morris College. He entered the U.S. Navy, Jan. 1, 1945. He first worked for his father at the Pavletich Auto Supply. After his discharge from the Navy he opened GI Trade Schools.

In 1951 he became partners in a lumber company that was in operation for 27 years. In 1980 he started Pete Pavletich Company which is still in operation today. He was a 32nd degree Mason.

Preceding him in death were his daughter, Pam Esteve; granddaughter, Devon Lin Burton; and brothers, Jack Paul and Yacob Pavletich.

Survivors are his wife of 67 years, Ramelle Pavletich of Jacksonville; a son and daughter in-law, Paul and Beckie Pavletich of Jacksonville; grandchildren; Corey Pavletich, Austin, and Gretchen Pavletich, all of Jacksonville and SuZan Young of Houston; three great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were Clay Carter, Hulon Brown, Max Treadwell, Tommy Dan Treadwell, Bill McCarter and Wayne Hammons.

Funeral for Danny Jay Bolton, 47, of New Summerfield was at 10 a.m. Thursday at Autry Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Mike Morrow officiating. Burial was in Teucla Cemetery. Mr. Bolton died April 1, 2007. He was born Feb. 25, 1960, in Jacksonville.

He was a mechanic and a cowboy. Preceding him in death were his father, J.W. Bolton; a brother, Darrell Bolton; and a sister, Kathy Bolton.

Survivors are his mother, Nellie Bolton of Jacksonville; his wife, Teresa Bolton of New Summerfield; his son, Justin Bolton of New Summerfield; a daughter, Miranda Bolton of Jacksonville; a grandchild, Sean Bolton of Jacksonville; three sisters and two brothers in-law, Terri and Leslie Bearden, Charolette Sanders and Barbara and Harold Lewis, all of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Warren died April 8, 2007. She was born Jan. 28, 1930, in Rusk County. She was a secretary at Rusk State Hospital and was a member of the Craft Baptist Church. She was a member of the Genealogical Society, Mayflower Society and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and a brother, Ross Davis.

Survivors are her husband, Dewey Maurice Warren of Jacksonville; a son and daughter in law, Mike and Judy Warren of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Michelle and Joey Beltz of Schertz and Shanna Dement and Aaron Dement, both of Jacksonville; four great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Crow and Mackenna Dement of Jacksonville and Serena Beltz and Jared Beltz, both of Schertz; a sister and brother-in-law, Bennie and Dan Jones of Jacksonville; and a sister-in-law, Irene Davis of Jacksonville.

CHARLES MICHAEL CORLEY SR.
     

Memorial service for Charles Michael Corley Sr., 57, of Alto, was at 1 p.m. Thursday at the O.T. Allen & Son Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Odis Bryan officiating. Mr. Corley died Friday. He was born Jan. 8, 1950, in Texas City to Gatlin and Ella Dossett Corley.

He had lived in Alto for approximately 25 years. He went to Texas City High School and worked as a welder in a ship yard and as a merchant marine.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Tony Reina.

Survivors are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles Michael Corley Jr. of League City and David and Rebecca Corley of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Lloyd Corley of Cocoa, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Peighton Corley.

GRADY CARLTON SINGLETARY

Memorial service for Grady Carlton Singletary, 76, of Alto was at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne Odom and the Rev. Dr. Randy Fitzgerald officiating. A private family graveside service was held at Shiloh Cemetery under the direction of O.T. Allen & Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Singletary died April 11, 2007. He was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Jacksonville to Henry Grady and Currye Odom Singletary. He was a member of the A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church and a graduate of Alto High School, Lon Morris College and Texas Tech University. He was a cattleman and an avid pilot, photographer and railroad fan. Mr. Singletary was a member of the Cherokee County Historical Commission and worked to preserve old photographs of the area and conduct interviews of local residents. He was interested in the history of lumber production and sawmills in East Texas. He served on several boards including the Cherokee County Electric Cooperative, Alto School Board, Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation Board and Cherokee County Appraisal District.

Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Virginia Singletary of Alto; two sons and daughters in law, Richard and Sandra Singletary of Northville, Mich. and Alan Singletary and Jane Atwood of Austin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Denny Sanders of Salem, Ore. and Anne and Rob Rhoades of Southlake; and five grandchildren, Kristen Singletary, Robert Singletary, Micah Sanders, Hannah Sanders and Helen Singletary.

She was born Aug. 29, 1913, in Henderson County. She was retired from sales and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Afton Grove Baptist Church.

Funeral for Ara Pearman, 96, of Alto will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hilltop Baptist Church with the Rev. Bud Bonner and the Rev. Josh Lindsey officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Jacksonville. Mrs. Pearman died Monday. She was born Jan. 12, 1911, in Rusk to Cleveland and Lucy Cribbs Halbert.

Survivors are several nieces and nephews.

 Graveside service for Lula A. Hinton-Robinson, 55, Jacksonville, was at 3 p.m. Saturday at Larissa Cemetery, south of Bullard, with the Rev. Julius Session and the Rev. James Fuller officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Community Funeral Home.

Mrs. Robinson died April 10, 2007. She was born June 6, 1951, in Cherokee County and was a lifelong resident. She attended Fred Douglass High School, was a private care provider and a member of Larissa CME Church. She was preceded in death by son, Frenchell Baxter Jr., and father, Henry Hinton Sr.

Survivors include a son, Darron Baxter of Jacksonville; daughter, Tamara Robinson of Dallas; mother, Ezell Hinton Tilley of Jacksonville; five brothers, the Rev. John R. Hinton of Tyler, the Rev. Billy Hinton of Overton, Leon Hinton and Henry Hinton, both of Jacksonville, and Bobby Hinton of Newllano, La.; three sisters, Polly Christopher of Rusk, Susan Sanders of Chandler, and Mary Ann Hinton of Dallas; and five grandchildren.

Funeral for Pearlie Mae (Penson) Toliver, 98, of the Sweet Union community will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Sweet Union Baptist Church with Pastor J.T. Hart officiating. Burial will be in Sweet Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30- 6:30 p.m. at the Tims Funeral Home chapel in Lufkin. Mrs. Toliver died April 15, 2007.

She was born Oct. 16, 1908, in Sweet Union.

Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Pearl Eva and Marion Neil Upshaw and Clintes Jean and Selmon Young; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

      Graveside service for Will "Cotton" Mettlen, 72, of Wells, was at 10 a.m. Thursday at Shooks Bluff Cemetery with Robert Spencer officiating under the direction of Gipson Funeral Home of Lufkin. Mr. Mettlen died April 16. He was born Nov. 8, 1934, in Lufkin to the late Henry Gordon and Willie Beatrice Lee Mettlen.

     Graveside service for Barbara Handley Detwiler, 73, of Rusk was at 4 p.m. Saturday at Reese Cemetery with Steve Handley officiating under the direction of Wallace- Thompson Funeral Home. Mrs. Detwiler died April 20, 2007. She was born Aug. 1, 1933, in Reese.

She was a resident of Rusk for two years. She was a member of the Church of Christ, a seamstress and employed by a telephone company for several years.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Walter and Ollie Handley,; a daughter, Phyllis Anita Farrow Wells; a brother, David Handley; and a sister, Nora Myrick.

Survivors are a daughter, Mary Frances Farrow Kelley of Rusk; a son, John Detwiler of Dallas; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Nadine Ingram of Jacksonville, and Mary and Robert Lee of Reese; two granddaughters and husbands Christy and Greg Stewart of Lufkin, and Myra and Ronnie McCreight of Rusk; three great grandsons, Preston Stewart and Wessley Stewart of Lufkin and Aaron Riley McCreight of Rusk; a sister-in-law, Jean Handley of Tyler,; an aunt, Lena Ray of Palestine; cousins, nieces and nephews; close friends Mr. and Mrs. Travis Etheridge of Reese.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert E. Lee, Travis Etheridge, Larry Coker, Charles Owen, Johnny Reagan and Edward Reagan.

JUANITA AURELIA HANDER ROBERTS

Graveside service for Juanita Aurelia Hander Roberts, 92, of Fort Smith,, Ark. will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 4, at Huntsville Oakwood Cemetery, 700 Martin Luther King Blvd. with the Rev. Marc L. Hander officiating.

Mrs. Roberts died April 1, 2007. She was born near Marlin, Falls County, April 23, 1914. She grew up at Belton. She earned her RN degree at Harris Methodist Memorial Hospital in Fort Worth in 1945. She spent seven years with her husband, Claude, a Fullbright Scholar, PhD, who taught ancient history in the armed forces education program in both the European and Pacific theaters after World War II. She researched in 12 countries and documented colored slides and library books, donating them to the USAF library.

After her husband's death in 1967, she spent 17 years as a supervisor and head nurse at Rusk State Hospital. She retired in 1988. She was a Methodist. Preceding her in death were her parents, Theodore W. and Aurelia Zimmerman Hander and her husband, Claude Roberts; four brothers, Nelson Hander, Dr. Raymond Hander, Theodore William Hander, Ethan Hander; and two sister, Myrtle Hander and LaVerne Hander Terrell.

Survivors are a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Fred and Helen Hander of Fort Smith; five nephews, 12 nieces and their families in Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma; several great-nieces and great-nephews.

MAURICE WARREN

Funeral for Maurice Warren, 82, of Jacksonville, was at 10 a.m. Thursday at Autry Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Leon Ross and the Rev. Lester Foreman officiating. Burial was in Rudd Cemetery.

Mr. Warren died April 16, 2007. He was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Jacksonville. He was a retired ward supervisor at Rusk State Hospital, a member of the Craft Baptist Church and a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Evelyn Warren; and brother, O.D. Warren.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Judy Warren of Jacksonville; three grandchildren and spouses, Michelle and Joey Beltz of Schertz, Shanna Dement and Aaron Warren, both of Jacksonville; four great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Crow and Mackenna Dement, both of Jacksonville, Serena Beltz and Jared Beltz, both of Schertz.

Pallbearers were Gerald Morton, Derek Clifton, Bob Tinsley, Bud Tinsley, Bryan Sharp and Buster Sharp.

ROSA JANE CIGAINERO

Funeral mass for Rosa Jane Cigainero, 65, of Jacksonville, was at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with Father Mark Kusmirck officiating. Burial was in Jarratt Cemetery.

Mrs. Cigainero died April 18, 2007. She was born in Greensburg, Ind. Dec. 27, 1941, to Clarence E. and Sara Estelle Davis. She was reared in Texarkana, where she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1960. She married her childhood sweetheart, Larry Joe Cigainero in 1962 and they moved to Denton. In 1966 the family moved to Jacksonville.

She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Texas at Tyler, and her master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. She devoted 28 years to education, working as a fifth grade teacher at East Side Elementary, then as a seventh grade language arts teacher at Jacksonville Middle School.

Mrs. Cigainero was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where she served as cantor for 35 years. She also was president of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma for two years.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, as well as her son, Joey, who died in a plane crash in 1991 while playing keyboards for Reba McEntire. Survivors are her husband, Larry Joe Cigainero of Jacksonville; her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Andrew Pitts of Spring; and her three grandsons, Joey, Jeffrey, and Jeremy Pitts of Spring.

Pallbearers were Randy Decker, Charlie Jones, Chuck Hopson, James Abell, Gary (Butch) Garrison, Wilbur Chancey, Walter Volz and Ron Weidenbach. Memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler 75701.

JACK SCRITCHFIELD

Funeral for Andrew Jackson (Jack) Scritchfield, 85, of Jacksonville was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Autry Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. David Hallum officiating. Burial was in Neches Cemetery.

Mr. Scritchfield died Sunday. He was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Frankston. He was a retired truck driver for Red Ball after 35 years and a member of the Afton Grove Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his wife, Ruth Rebecca Scritchfield and Adlene Scritchfield; a daughter, Bettye Ann Scritchfield; and granddaughter, Gina Renee McBride.

Survivors are two daughters and a son-in-law, Becky and Ocie McBride of Houston and Melba Jane Scritchfield Lufkin; a brother, James Earl Scritchfield of Henderson; two grandchildren, Dana Simmons and Jody McBride; five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Keith Bristow, Wayne Bristow, George Bennett, Mark Bennett, Bill Bennett, Michael Champion, Brandon Champion and Kevin Simmons. Men of Afton Grove Sunday school class III were honorary pallbearers.

MELVIN MORRIS LEVINE

Funeral for Melvin Morris Levine, 29, of Rusk, was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Rusk with Rev. Randy Sparks and Pastor Gary Christopher officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery under the direction of Wallace- Thompson Funeral Home.

Mr. Levine died April 19, 2007. He was born Feb. 28, 1978, in Houston to the late Harry Jacob and Barbara Ferguson Levine. He was a Baptist. He was employed as a tool pusher for Scan Drill Inc. and a lifelong resident of Rusk.

Survivors are his fiancée, Julie Odom of Rusk; a sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and David Bruce of San Antonio; four uncles, Ronnie Levine of Bullard, Donald Ferguson of Maydelle, Michael Ferguson of Handcomer and Steve Ferguson of Newport; 10 aunts, Florence Levine Allen and Becky Levine, both of Bullard, Donna White of Sugarland, Julie Ferguson of Austin, Debbie Ferguson of Crosby, Melisha Ferguson of Maydelle, Vickie Ferguson of Hancock, Debbie Ferguson of Newport and Janet Sturla of Florida, many other cousins and family.

Pallbearers were Jeremy Grimes, Justin Duke, Ricky Whalan, Neil Pierce, Joey Rowan, Michael Wayne Yancey, Jake Phillips, and Justin Ferguson.

THOMAS DEWITT GRIMES

Funeral for Thomas Dewitt Grimes, 80, of Rusk was at 2 p.m. Monday in the Wallace- Thompson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Don Copeland and the Rev. Lee Welch officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Mr. Grimes died April 20, 2007. He was born March 18, 1927, in Rusk.

He was a World War II and Korean War veteran serving both in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. He received the Purple Heart in the Korean War.

Preceding him in death were his grandson, Allen Strayhorn; brothers James Grimes and Bartee Grimes; his father, George W. Grimes and his mother, Rosa Grimes.

Survivors are two daughters, Sherry Jones of Maydelle and Debbie Strayhorn of Greenville; two sisters, Evelyn Todd of Freeport and Elsie Grogan of Jacksonville; a brother, R.V. Grimes of Auga Dulse; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Gerald Grimes, Buddy (Dale) Grimes, Fred Strayhorn, Kenneth Lusk, Jim Johnson and Delton Clapp.

Calvin Jones was honorary pallbearer.
