Funeral services for Rabon Berry, 79, of Tyler will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, in St. James Baptist Church, Tyler with the Rev. Carroll Bettis

Services for Carroll Bettis, 76, were held Saturday, January 5, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Autry Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Pete Freeman and Rev. Steve Edwards officiating the service. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery. Mr. Bettis passed away, Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, in Tyler. He was born on Oct. 15, 1931 in Donaldson, Arkansas to Marvin and Oneda Haltom Bettis. He served his country as a U.S. Marine who served during the Korean War. He was a member and Deacon at Central Baptist Church and a Gideon. Carroll managed Bek’s Restaurants in Dallas for about 40 years. Mr. Bettis was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Louis Bettis. He is survived by his wife, Joy Bettis, of Jacksonville; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Becky Bettis, of Brownsboro; and a sister, Audrey Stow, of Arkadelphia, Ark. Carroll and Joy loved all their many nieces and nephews as if they were their own children including the youngest, their great-great-nephew Mikal Whitten. Pallbearers included Ed Snider, Russell LeBlanc, Ronny Lee, Jeff Horton, Micheal Whitten, John Bettis, Frank Goodson and Wyndel Cummins. Honorary Pallbearers were the deacons of Central Baptist, Gideons and Ralph George, Bill Lovelady and Chris Lindsey.  Mr. Gus Brown

Mr. Gus Brown, 80 of Jacksonville , TX. went to be with the Lord Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at East Texas Medical Center in Jacksonville, TX. Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Honey Grove, Texas. The Rev. Larry Blain will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Allens Point Cemetery north of Honey Grove. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to services. Pallbearers will be employees of East Texas Utilities Service, Ronnie Rogers, Jimmy Cantrell, Tim Guinn, Lowell Stagner, Mark Hayes, Ed Gray, Billy Gore, Steve Eckert and Kenneth Berry. Honorary Pallbearers will be other employees of East Texas Utilities Service. Mr. Brown was born Nov. 25, 1927, in Electra, TX. to Clemmie Lee Brown and Vera Alene Melton Brown. He married Bobbie Weaver Jan. 25, 1952, at Durant, Okla., and was of the Baptist Faith. Gus graduated from Honey Grove High School with the Class of 1946. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Philippines. In 1950 he went to work for R.B. Stovall, which later became Chapman Construction Company for 25 years. He worked a short time for J.L. Utilities Company in Edgewood, TX. He formed his own company, East Texas Utilities Service, in September 1979. He retired in 1992 leaving the company to his wife, Bobbie, but he continued to be active in the company serving as Chairman of the Board and a consultant. He also was a member of the Elk Lodge and the V.F.W. He leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 56 years, Bobbie Brown of the home; sons, Randy Gus Brown of Jacksonville and Russell Keith Brown of Tyler; grandchildren, Jill, Tyler, and Brittany Brown of Tyler; brothers, Bobby Ray and Pricilla Ann Brown of Haslett and Bill and Cindi Brown of Irving; sisters, Peggy Simmons of Sherman and Jan and Jimmy Isbel of Colleyville; aunts, Wilma Dell Genovesi of Dallas and Tommie Jo Crain of Dallas; and several nieces and nephews. Parnell Cameron

Parnell Cameron was born in Troup on June 24, 1927 and passed away on Jan. 25, 2008. Parnell was a member of South Richey Baptist Church, and was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Ardell Cameron; in-laws, Ocie and Carrie Hartless; brother J.T. Cameron and his wife, Ruth; sister Billie Jean and husband, Charles Odom. Parnell is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bobbie; sons Jimmy Cameron and wife Kim, Tommy Cameron and wife Cindy; grandsons Sean Cameron and wife Katie, John Cameron and wife Mika; granddaughters, Tammy Cameron, Jaime Smith and husband Jarod, Christy Moody and husband Chris; great-granddaughters Cheslie and Cheyenne Cameron, and Madison Moody; great-grandsons, Cody, Colby, and Caleb Cameron; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and loving friends. Doyle Dean Conner

Funeral services for Doyle Dean Conner, 79, of Jacksonville, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, in Renfro Memorial Chapel in Boren-Conner Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Jamerson officiating under the direction of Boren-Conner Funeral Home, Jacksonville. Conner died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, in a Tyler Hospital. He was born Nov. 4, 1928 in Ponta. He lived in the Houston area from 1947 until 1999 when he returned to Jacksonville. He was a member of the Antioch United Methodist Church. He was retired from Geosource Industries and was an active member of the Farm Bureau, the Texas Forestry Association, the board of Myrtle Springs Cemetery Association and was very involved with the Cherokee County Hay Show. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Dora Conner; and brothers, Bill and Weldon Conner. Survivors include his wife, Pansy Conner of Jacksonville; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Grace Conner of Sherman; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and James Lister of Jacksonville and Debbie and Frank Baker of Houston; eight grandchildren and eight great-grand children. Pallbearers will be Douglas McConkey, Hubert Baker, Kyle Smith, Bart Suminski, Pat Conner, Mike Conner and Mike Smith. Nathan Hawthorne will be an honorary pallbearer. Burial will follow at Earle’s Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Earle died December, 27, 2007 in Nashville, Tenn. Jack was born on December 23, 1933 in Jacksonville, Texas. He attended Jacksonville High School where he excelled in sports and music, after graduation he attended Texas A and M University and Sam Houston University. He married Barbara Thomas of Jacksonville; they were married 53 years. He retired after 35 years of working for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Controller and Data Systems Specialist. Jack was active in the development of the FAA Conflict Alert System. He retired to Nashville where he enjoyed his children, grandchildren, music, birding and many other interests. Jack is survived by his wife of 53 years; Barbara Earle, Ashland City, TN.; his children, Steve and Allison Earle, Nashville, TN., Mark and Kathleen Earle, Colorado Springs, CO., Kelly and Ron Meers, Carver, MA., Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart, Ashland City, TN., and Pat and Rita Earle, Joelton, TN; grandchildren, Justin Earle, Ian Earle, Molly Earle, Emily Earle, Mary Earle, Ashley Meers, Scott and Stephanie Deluke , Christopher and Lisa Mims, Kyle Mims, Jackson Earle; one great-grandchild, Nicholas Ritchie. brother and sister-in-law, Neil and Selena Earle, Jacksonville; and sister-in-law, Barbara Earle, Jacksonville. Charles Edwards Gill

 Charles Edwards Gill, 87, of New Summerfield, was born on Aug. 13, 1920 and passed away on Jan. 24, 2008 in Jacksonville. Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at McDonald Cemetery, New Summerfield, with Rev. Hank Chandler officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home. Charles was the fourth child born to J. W. and Mertis Edwards Gill. He was a farmer and a Methodist. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Marilyn Tipton Gill, New Summerfield; his son, Charles Lynn Gill, New Summerfield; granddaughter, Rachel Gill of Austin; grandson, Joshua Gill, Cincinnati, Ohio and great-grandson, Ian Whitfield of Austin. Milton Harris

Memorial services for Milton Harris, 75, of Rusk are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008 in Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg Gunter officiating. Mr. Harris died Jan. 12, 2008 in a Jacksonville nursing home. He was born Jan. 23, 1932 in Waterloo, New York to Charles Pierre and Mary Harris. He was a resident of Rusk for 30 years and an Episcopalian. He retired as a Class A PGA golf professional. He was also a construction superintendent for years. He was a rodeo cowboy and calf roper, avid fisherman, and avid in little league baseball. Mr. Harris was also a Cushing baseball coach. He served in the United States Air Force in World War II. He is preceded in death by two brothers. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Vera Harris of Columbia, South Carolina; daughter, Kim Lloyd of Rusk; one brother; two sisters; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Walter B. Helms

Funeral services for Walter B. Helms, 84, of Jacksonville, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, in Autry Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Rudy Bond, Bishop R.C. Helms and Tony Rollins officiating under the direction of Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville. Burial will be in Meador Cemetery, Jacksonville.

Helms died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, in Jacksonville. He was born Dec. 15, 1923, in Cushman, Ark.

He was a retired inspector for Gary Tool Co. and a member of New Life Worship Center in Tyler. He and his wife, Addie, pastored at First Pentecostal Church of God in Jacksonville for 15 years.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Helm; daughter, Wanda Redd; brothers, James, Genie and Verdell; sisters, Mary Wilkerson and Marie Melton. Survivors include his wife, Addie Helm, of Jacksonville; son and daughter-in-law Walter and Donna Helm of Spring; daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Steve Girault and Dorothy Rollins, all of Jacksonville; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Kathy and Tony Rollins of Jacksonville; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, John Soley of Huffman, Phillip and Cindy Soley of Spring, Steve and Brenda Soley of Kingwood, Doug Soley of Jacksonville and Gary and Cheryl Soley of Angleton; grandchildren, Michelle, Kelley, Deanna, Stephanie, Tony and Wesley; step-grandchildren, Jonathon, Meagan, Jessica, Ashley Jessie and Lisa; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren, R.C. Herbert Hudson

James A. Jones

Services for Mr. James A. Jones, 63, of DeSoto, formerly of Jacksonville, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2007, in North Bolton Christian Church in Jacksonville. Viewing will be at 10 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in Jacksonville City Cemetery under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., in Dallas and Mercy/McGowan Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Mr. James A. Jones was born Sept. 30, 1944 to the late Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Jones in Jacksonville. He united with the North Bolton Street Christian Church at a nearly age. He remained a member until his move to Dallas County in the early 70s where he subsequently united with Concord Missionary Baptist Church in 1976 and remained a faithful member until death. He graduated from Fred Douglass High School in 1963. He served in the United States Air Force from April 1964 until March 1968 at which time he received an honorable discharge. He received an Associate of Science degree from El Centro College in Dallas in 1975.Mr. Jones held licenses from The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and was also licensed as a Certified Medical Radiologist Technologist with the Texas Department of Health. As a healthcare professional, Mr. Jones worked at the Veterans Hospital and Midway General Hospital (Dallas, County) and he was employed at Parkland Hospital in Dallas at the time of his death. proceeding him in death were his parents L.C. and Velma B. Jones; a sister, Lois M. Jones Eugene; and a brother, Lincoln C. Jones. Survivors include a godson, Eddie Lee “Tre” Washington, III of Natchez, Miss.; brothers Horace Jones, Claude M. Jones of Jacksonville and John E. Jones of Tyler; sisters Vetma L. Jones, Ruby J. Jones of Jacksonville, Viola E. Jones Bagley (Romeo, Jr.) (DeSoto, Tx.); six nephews; seven nieces; four great nephews; six great nieces; two great-great nephews; great-great nieces, and a host of other relatives and friends. Grace Salvatore Joynt

Funeral services and burial for Grace Salvatore Joynt, 84, of Jacksonville, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at New Salem Cemetery in Rusk County with Father Mark Kusmerik officiating. Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville.

Joynt died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 in Austin. She was born June 29, 1923.

She was a retired secretary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Joynt. Survivors include her sons, Robert Joynt, of Neosho, Mo., and Glen “James” Joynt, of Doylesburg, Pa.; daughter Kathrun Davis, of Austin; brother John Risolvato of Omaha, Neb.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Raymond Martin Kellerman, Jr.

Funeral services for Raymond Martin Kellerman, Jr., 48, of Cushing, will be Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Dickie Allen Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Gerral Faulkner officiating. Burial will be held in the Sacul Cemetery.

Mr. Kellerman died Thursday in Nacogdoches. He was born April 18, 1959, in Houston, to Raymond M. Sr. and Carrie Whitehead Kellerman. He served in the U.S. Army.

Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at the funeral home.

Robert “Bobby ”Lovelady

Graveside services for Robert “Bobby ”Lovelady, 72, of Rusk are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Camp Ruby Cemetery, Indian Springs, Texas, with the Rev. Barry Jeffires officiating.

Robert passed away, Monday, December 31, 2007, in Jacksonville.

John Martin

John Martin Graveside services for John Martin, 62, of Rusk, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, in Resthaven Cemetery in Jacksonville, with the Rev. Don Copeland and Bishop Gary Murray officiating, under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mr. Martin died Dec. 28, 2007, in a Jacksonville hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1945, in Phoenix, Ariz., to John Callaway and Mary Ava Riddle Martin. Mr. Martin was a resident of Rusk for 27 years, formerly of Houston. He retired from Texas Department of Criminal Justice on the Hodge Unit in Rusk. He owned and operated J.A. Martin Construction in Rusk for 25 years. Mr. Martin was also a substitute postal carrier in Rusk for several years. Preceded in death by his father, John C. Martin; his brother, Jay Sadler; and his daughter, April L. Martin Nunley. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Wanda Martin of Rusk; his mother, Mary Sadler of Jacksonville; his son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Maggie Martin of Rusk; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Tonya Perkins and John Smoot of Temple and Amanda and Sammy Hernandez of Rusk; eight grandchildren and numerous cousins. Pallbearers include Aaron Martin, John Smoot, Lee Baker, Sammy Hernandez, Larry Butcher, Phil Kosted, David Evans, Edward Reid and Randy Smith. Honorary pallbearer will be Tim Reed. Mr. Mayes died Jan. 16, 2008 in a Tyler Hospice. He was born June 24, 1928 in San Augustine to Arthur and Edna Willis Mayes.

Sallie Ann Miles

Sallie Ann Miles Funeral services for Mrs. Sallie Ann Miles, 51, of Jacksonville will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 at Renfro Memorial Chapel at Boren-Conner Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Pastor Richard Spencer will officiate. Burial will be at Gossett Chapel Cemetery in Jacksonville under the direction of Boren-Conner Funeral Home. Mrs. Miles went to be with her Lord and Savior at her residence on Monday, Jan. 21, 2008. She was born Feb. 27, 1956, in Jacksonville and was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville. She was a member of the Fellowship Bible Church in Jacksonville and had worked as a school bus driver for Jacksonville and Troup ISDs. She was also a professional seamstress and was known for making homemade quilts and gifts for her grandchildren. Mrs. Miles was preceded in death by her parents, Noble and Phyllis Rollins. Survivors include her husband, Doug Miles of Jacksonville; sons, Bobby Ray Miles of Lake Charles, La., Christopher DeWayne Lynch of Whitehouse and Aniello Ray Miles of Rusk; daughter, Shirley Ann Nance of Jacksonville; brother, George Rollins of Vermont; sister, Kathy Hoffhines of Alaska; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers are Bobby Miles, Bobby Nance and members of the Fellowship Bible Church. Honorary pallbearers include Christopher Lynch. Mr. Mitchell died Jan. 23, 2008 at his residence. He was born May 15, 1965 in Irving, to William Clark and Marion Frances Smelley Mitchell.

Funeral services for Raberta Paris, 90, of Jacksonville are scheduled for Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Autry Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville. Burial will follow at Wofford Cemetery; Frankston Mrs. Paris died Saturday, January 26, 2008, in a Jacksonville nursing home. Mrs. Pris was born June 16, 1917, in Anderson County to John Henry Parrot and Jessie Boyd Owens. She was a homemaker and member of the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boone Paris. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Danny Boone and Liz Paris of Galveston; daughters and son-in-law, Wanda and Marvin Robison of Jacksonville and Charlotte Cossey of Galena Park; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Honory pallbearers will be deacons of the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville and the Mary Martha Sunday school class of First Baptist Church. Rachel Parker

Funeral services for Rachel Parker, 87, of Rusk are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, in Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Lloyd Lane and Pastor Keith Hassell officiating. Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mrs. Parker died Jan. 29, 2008, in a Rusk nursing home. She was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Rusk to Alex Lafayette and Annie Lee Wallace George. She lived most of her life in Rusk. She was a long time member of Lone Oak Baptist Church in Rusk. She was also a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Rusk and is a current member of Miracle Christian Center in Buffalo. She retired from Nichols Industry in Jacksonville after many years of service. After retiring, she worked in childcare and many area children call her “Nanny Ma” to this day. Preceded in death by her husband Leonard Parker in 1993, one brother and three sisters. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Leslie and Doris Parker of Rusk; brother, Nolan George of Brazoria; two sisters, Mildred Jackson of Dallas and Lorene Wofford of Lake Jackson; four grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. William F. 'Bill' Quinn

Graveside services for retired Texas Ranger William F. “Bill” Quinn, age 83, of Rusk are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, January 3, 2008 in Cedar Hill Cemetery with Rev. Greg Gunter officiating under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk.

Mr. Quinn died December 31, 2007 in a Jacksonville Hospital. He was born November 17, 1924 in Trinidad, TX to Carey W. and Mattie Pearl Fuqua Quinn. He was a resident of Rusk for twenty-eight years. He was a member of Church On The Rock in Rusk. He graduated from Trinidad High School in 1942 and he attended two years of college at LeTourneau College in Longview, TX.

Mr. Quinn became a Texas Highway Patrolman August 1, 1948 and a Texas Ranger in Navasota, TX in 1970. He retired as a Texas Ranger in 1988. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Zelma Quinn of Rusk; three daughters, Rhonda Morrow of Niagra Falls, New York, Neweta Rash of Childress, TX, and Vicki Stubblefield of Austin, TX; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 6 to p.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at the funeral home. If desired, memorials may be made to Cal Farley Boys Ranch or charity of choice.

Kathleen Gould Ragsdale

Graveside services for Kathleen Gould Ragsdale, 87, of Houston, formerly of Jacksonville, are scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Earle’s Chapel Cemetery, Jacksonville with Dr. Faulk Landrum officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville. Kathleen was born April 25, 1920 in Jacksonville, to Richard Preston Gould and Lucille Trout Gould and died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 in a Houston hospital. Kathleen married John Norman Ragsdale on July 14, 1937, soon after her May graduation from Jacksonville High School. She later attended Lon Morris College. Kathleen is survived by two children Kay Ragsdale Leddon from Cary, NC and John Wayne Ragsdale and Susie from Pearland. She was blessed with six grandchildren and their spouses, Connie Schrick and husband James, of Scottsdale, Az., Richard Leddon and wife Jeanie, of Boulder, Co., Melissa Faulkner and husband Chip, of Cary, NC, Michael Ragsdale, of Houston, James Ragsdale, of Superior, Co. and Jason Ragsdale, of New York, NY. She was also blessed with five great-grandchildren Alec and Jack Leddon, Ian and Jake Faulkner and Allyson Ragsdale. Kathleen is also survived by her cousin, Robert Dale McArthur and wife, Janie Ballard McArthur, of Columbia, Mo. and other family and friends. Kathleen was a life-long member of First Christian Church. She was a descendant of two pioneer Jacksonville families. Her grandfather, J. E. Gould established the Gould Granite and Monument Co. in 1908. Her father, Dick Gould chiseled the lettering on the World War I Soldier Monument in Jacksonville City Park. Thelma was predeceased by her mother and father, Ira H. and Siddie Elizabeth Higgs; her husband, J. Carroll Ray Sr.; her son, John Carroll Ray Jr.; and her nine siblings, Ira Higgs, Daisy Bodin, Homer Higgs, Jewel Higgs, Blanche Murray, Carrie Bryan, Guy Mitchell, Mary Waters and Hazel Heard. Thelma is survived by her daughter and long time caregiver Dorothy Shahan of Stone Mountain; her grandchildren, Sharon Shahan and Joseph Henslee of Atlanta, Ga., Lisa and David Whitlaw of Norcross, Ga., and John and Bonnie Ray of Hartselle, Ala., and Mary Lou Miner of Rosemont, Or.; five great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma lived every moment of her 96 years with us. She was happiest when she was entertaining others with her tall tales, family history or original ghost stories. Thelma was never idle. She would cook, make candy, sew clothing and raggedy Anne and Andy dolls, or crochet. She was gregarious, quick with laughter and often the center of attention and always compassionate and loving. her aura and spirit were endearing to everyone she encountered. Our lives will be less colorful without her. However, Thelma will live always in our hearts, in our memories, and forever in her stories and our love. Charlene Kelly Simmons

Charlene Kelly Simmons, 86, of Jacksonville passed away on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at her home in Oakwood, surrounded by her loving family. 

Graveside services will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Wells at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at Autry Funeral Home.

 Simmons was born July 27, 1921 in Douglas, to Luther and Alice Kelly. She retired from JISD as a food service worker and was a member of the Baptist church.

Simmons was proceeded in death by her husband of 63 years, Clay Morris Simmons, on April 18, 2005; and her parents and her sister, Opal Anderson of Kinder, La.

 She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene Williamson of Humble, Martha and Larry Sockwell of Jacksonville, and Johnnie and Charles Brogdon of Buffalo.

 Grandchildren are De Lynda Moore, Robin Cleland, Don Garner, Jr. Kendra Scarborough, John Paul Elliott, Stephen Elliot, Michael Elliot, Frances Hague, Chuck Brogdon. Nieces are Shelia West and Barbara Anderson of Kinder, La. Simmons had 18 great-grandchildren and  two  great-great grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Ellerbee, Nolan West, James Sockwell and Charles Brogdon.

Thelma Neal Smith

Don Copeland officiating under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mrs. Smith died Jan. 6, 2008 in a Tyler Hospice. She was born Aug. 14, 1918 in Maydelle to Louis and Lottie Neal. Mrs. Smith lived in Rusk with her late husband Elbert most of her life. She retired from Rusk State Hospital in 1982 after 21 years of service. She lived in Tyler for the past 6 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rusk. She is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years Elbert Smith; daughter-in-law, Paula Smith; and sister Opal Allen. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. and Mary Smith of Bullard; granddaughter, Stacy Smith of Magnolia; step-grandson, Kent Peters of Rusk; sister, Maxine Scott of Tyler; plus, several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Wilburn Ray Smith

Graveside services with military honors for Wilburn Ray Smith, 86, of Jacksonville, Texas are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2008, at Resthaven Cemetery with Brother Mitchell McRight speaking. Arrangements are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville. Mr. Smith passed away on January 13, 2008, in Jacksonville, Texas. He was born June 2, 1921, in Gallatin, Texas. He served honorably in the U.S. Army’s 743rd Tank Battalion during World War II. He participated in the landing at Omaha Beach, Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and continued on to Belgium where he met his future bride, Yvonne. Soon thereafter, he took part in the climactic Battle of the Bulge. After being wounded by shrapnel, he was finally able to assist his Unit and all of the Allied forces in victory over Nazi Germany. He received several medals and commendations including Bronze Stars and a Unit Citation for Participation in D-Day Actions. He was a loyal husband, a loving father, and a doting grandfather. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, E.T. Smith and Nathan Smith, both of Jacksonville. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Yvonne Bertha Godfroid Smith of Jacksonville; sister Johnnie Campbell of Jacksonville; son Geary Ray and wife Debbie Smith of Rockport; daughter Vivian Carol Smith of Jacksonville; three grandchildren Eric and wife Susan Bertram of San Antonio, Colin and wife Anna Smith of Mountain View, California, and Cayce Smith of Austin; one great-grandson Steven Ray also of Mountain View, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Stewart died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 in Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. He was born Jan. 14, 1936 in New Summerfield. He attended Pine Hill Schools in the Pine Hill Community. He attended Grace Temple Church of God in Christ and was active in the Sunday school, was a member of the choir and a deacon for the church. He was a retired logger. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Stewart of New Summerfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Donny and Cheryl Stewart of Jacksonville, Todd and Cynthia Stewart of Sacramento, Ca. and Michael and Sarah Stewart of London, England; daughters and son-in-law, Tonya and Keith Hayter of Tyler, Cynthia Lee of Portland, Ore., Latrina Williams, of Houston, Sharon Fletcher of Houston and Ann Story of Tyler; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eddie and Rubye Stewart of Denver, Co., Elmer Stewart of Rusk and Larry and Paula Stewart of Henderson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Atheria and J.W. She was an Office Manager for Leo Martin Chevrolet in Lake Jackson for many years. Lois was a member of D.A.R., Jacksonville and the Soroptimist Club in Freeport. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church, Freeport and a current member of Central Baptist Church, Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her husband; H.A. “Buddy” Strait, her parents and her brother: Morris Mayfield. Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Max and Ginger Strait, Troup; grandson and wife, Bryan Allen and Adri Strait, Auburn, Washington; and a sister, Novis Morris, Jacksonville. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mr. Taylor died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008 in a Tyler Hospital. He was born Aug. 3, 1925 in Rusk to W.H. and Lula Johnson Taylor. He was a lifelong resident of Rusk. He was a pipeline worker and served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a member of Memorial Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes Taylor and son, Tony Taylor. He is survived by son, Mike Taylor of Huntsville; brother, Samuel Taylor of Lubbock; sister, Orene Lloyd of Rusk; grandsons, Britt Taylor of Las Vegas, Nev., Nathan Taylor of Rusk, Zack Taylor of Tyler, John Stafford of Longview and Timothy Taylor of Germany; two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Eula Mae Tilley

Tilley died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 in East Texas Medical Center. She was born Jan. 10, 1935, in Sacul.

She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts and Science Degree in Business and Master’s Degree from University of Tyler. She was a lifetime resident of Cherokee County. She was a member of Woodville CME Church and later united with Rising Star Baptist Church in Jacksonville. She was employed with PSI Inc., in Tyler. Mrs. Warmsley was a member of the Board of Directors of the regional and state associations of Texas Head Start, where she also served as president; a member of the Board of Directors for Goals for Jacksonville; a member of Cherokee County Interagency Council; Board Member of Cherokee Health Advisory; and a member of Black Citizens for Positive Change. She earned membership in Who’s Who Registry, which is limited to those individuals who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in their occupations. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Warmsley of Shreveport, La.; parent, Vesta Richards of Jacksonville; stepson, Bernard Warmsley of San Bernadina, Calif.; stepdaughter, Tonesha Warmsley of Shreveport, La.; very special friend, Mrs. Vernice Johnson; and several aunts and cousins. Pall bearers were Melvin Session, Walter Session, John D. Griffith, Joe Teague, Aaron Howard and Dee Session.

She was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Rusk. She attended Shady Grove Elementary and Fred Douglas High School of Jacksonville. She attended Good Street Baptist Church of Dallas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Photho and Lou Mansel Chandler; her three sisters, Mollie M. Wickware, Carrie B. and Doreth Chandler; and three brothers, T.V., L.C. and T.C. Chandler. Survivors include several nieces, nephews and friends. Pallbearers will be her nephews and grandnephews. Honorary pallbearers will be O.C. Chandler, Cleveland Chandler, Raymond Chandler, Billy Wickware, Damon Wickware and Clarence Chandler.
