Eddie Pauline Houston Johnson Alcorn

 

Eddie Pauline Houston Johnson Alcorn was born Saturday, June 22, 1918. Her parents were Edward Chester Houston and Elvie Pauline Usher Houston of Alto Texas. Mrs. Johnson was a Beautician in Fortt Worth from 1947 until 2000. For 47 years of those years, she owned and operated her own shop. In 2001, she moved to Frankston. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Frankston and the Methodist Scarlet Ladies Red Hat Club. For the last year and a half she resided at the Frankston Health Care Center. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Irving Alcorn; and her daughter Judith Ann Boulivare McClendon. She is survived by a son; Paul David and wife Toni Marie Johnson of Fresno Ca.; a daughter Jenny and husband Jerry Beard of Frankston; a son-in-law Jimmy McClendon of Wichita Falls; and two step-sons Barry and wife Kris Alcorn and Byron and wife Melissa Alcorn both of Fort Collins; and a sister-in-law Mary Houston of Carrollton, Ga. She also has 14 grandchildren 19 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Pauline Johnson will be held at a later date. Calvin D. Allen

 

Calvin D. Allen, 74, of Houston, formerly of Jacksonville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, following a courageously fought battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Allen; his parents, Mason and Alma Allen; his brothers, Alfred, Earl, Luchies, Wesley, and Junior Allen; and his sisters Jessie Marie and Virginia Allen. He leaves behind a family that loved him dearly including daughters and sons-in-law Karla and Randy Spann, Karen and Tim Mullinax, Kachel and David Mullinax; and his greatly loved, nine grandchildren, Ryan, Brittany and Nathan Spann; Karah, Kayla, Kourtney, Korbin and Kalvin Mullinax; Timothy Mullinax; brothers and sisters -in-law Bennie and Evelyn Allen, Murl and Juanita Allen, Charlie and Sheila Allen; sister-in -law, Mary Allen; sisters and brothers-in-law: Ava and Max Ray, Alpha and Marcus Hanks; numerous nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends. Calvin Allen was a long-time member of the Cochran Street Baptist Church in Houston where he served the Lord for many years as a deacon and music director. In the past few years, he had been a welcomed visitor at the Peoples Church in Jacksonville when he would come to visit family. He was a commercial painting and decorating contractor in the Houston area since 1964; a member of Heights Rotary Club, past president of  Northside Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Masonic lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his family and he will always be remembered as a man who considered his family and friends God’s greatest blessing. Services were held at George H. Lewis funeral home in Houston with Rev. Martin C. Devries officiating. Special speakers included nephew, Randy Allen of Baytown and Rev. Andy Fannette of Jacksonville. The family would like to express a special thanks to his physician, Dr. Mohammed Attar, and his staff for the compassion and personal care given to him and his family over the years. Seaborn Bass

 

Funeral services for Seaborn Bass, age 83, of Jacksonville will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Jacksonville. The Rev. Vernon Lee will officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Park, Jacksonville. Mr. Bass died Saturday in Tyler. Mr. Bass was a member and deacon of First Baptist church and was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was a retired employee of the Southern Pacific Railroad as a brakeman and conductor. Mr. Bass was born November 5, 1924, in Cherokee County and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Bass. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Bass, Jacksonville; a daughter and son-law, Charlotte and Craig Morgan, Jacksonville; a sister Ruth Garner, Jacksonville; a daughter in-law, Sandra Strother Bass, Dallas. Mr. Bass has three grandchildren: Andrea Hancock, Ben Bass, and Amy Ison. Also survived by nine great-grandchildren. Pallbearers include: Ben Bass, Steve Ison, Jay Hancock, John Pruitt, Bobby Johnson and Craig Morgan. Honorary Pallbearers are Barnwell Anderson and the Men's Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville. Funeral services for Mr. George A. Beasley, 81 of Frankston, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 at Autry Funeral Home Chapel, Frankston with Pastor Wayne Eubanks officiating. Burial will be held at Harvey Cemetery, near Broaddus at 3 p.m. Friday. Mr. Beasley died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 in Tyler. He was born Monday, April 11, 1927 in Cherokee County. Mr. Beasley was employed as a brick layer in the construction industry. He was preceded in death by father Jewell Beasley and mother Beulah Kinney Beasley. Survivors include his wife Marjie Nell Beasley of Frankston; sons and daughters-in-law John and Jewell Beasley of Maydelle, Robert and Carla Beasley of Frankston, Andy and Janie Beasley of Chandler; daughters and sons-in-law Karen and Russell Powell Beasley of Tyler and Terri and Jim Chandler Beasley of Monmouth, Il.; brothers and sisters-in-law Jewel and Bonnie Beasley of Kilgore, James and Jane Beasley of Manvel and Jesse Beasley of Tyler; sisters and brothers-in-law Mae and Ray Pierce of Richardson and Fae Mangham of Fort Worth; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Charlie Chapman “Chat” Berry

 

Funeral services for Charlie Chapman “Chat” Berry, 90, of Rusk are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home chapel in Rusk, with the Rev. Don Copeland, the Rev. Charles Haley, the Rev. Phillip Warren and the Rev. Mike Bradford officiating. Burial will be in the Sardis-Edgefield Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mr. Berry died Sept. 11, 2008, in a Jacksonville nursing home. He was born April 4, 1918, in the Sardis community to the late Charlie F. and Margaret Sue Martin Berry. He was a lifelong resident of Rusk, a member of the Sardis Baptist Church. Mr. Berry retired from Rusk State Hospital after 38 years of service. He had also worked in the oil field for many years. And, he was a member of the Sardis Cats Tri-County League baseball team. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred Marie Berry in 1982; son, Charlie Michael Berry; two brothers, Stanley Berry and Morris Berry; four sisters, Murl Cummins, Adolph Berry, Evelyn Dear and Edith Stark. He is survived by two daughters, Glenda Davis of Jacksonville and Carolyn Pyle of Rusk; two sisters, Victoria Thompson of Jacksonville and Doris Whitney of Mont Belvieu; two grandsons, R. Mathew Pyle of Rusk and Michael Chapman Pyle of Rusk; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Pallbearers include Mathew Pyle, Michael Pyle, G.M. Berry, Billy Edwards, Marshall Dear and Gary Williams. Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home, Jacksonville. Mrs. Britt died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 in Jacksonville. She was born Sept. 22, 1928 in Lott. She married Sherman M. Britt who preceded her in death in 1992.Mrs. Britt was a homemaker and attended First Baptist Church in Dayton. She is preceded in death by her husband Sherman M. Britt in 1992; parents William M. and Georgia Bolden; sisters Geneva Hodges and Mattie Killough; and brothers Richard Bolden and Elmo Bolden. Survivors include sons Bobby Britt and wife Dana of Palestine and Ronald Britt and wife Lou of Lafayette, La.; daughters Carol Wardlaw and husband Bill of Jacksonville and Ann Christian and husband Gary of Palestine; sisters Barbara Pelzel of Lott and Sue Rogers of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Howard Davis Jr.

 

Funeral services for Howard Davis Jr., 82 of Rusk, are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 in Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Newton and Dr. Rev. David Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mr. Davis died Sept. 15, 2008 in a Rusk Nursing Home. He was born Dec. 4, 1925 in Rusk to the late Atticus Howard and Tinnie Bell Sherrard Davis Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Rusk and a member of Congregational Methodist Church in Rusk. Mr. Davis retired in 1984 from Texas Highway Department after 37 years of service and served in the United States Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Lee Davis in 2005, daughter-in-law, Sherry Davis and three brothers. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Armagene Davis of Rusk; six sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Davis of Jacksonville, Bobby and Becky Davis of Phoenix, Ariz., Charles and Pat Davis of Rusk, Richard and Pam Davis of Rusk, Anthony Davis of Houston, Jackie Davis of Rusk; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Ronnie Stringer of Maydelle; daughter-in-law, Suzy Davis of Tennessee Colony; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Thomas W. ‘Buster’ Durisoe

 

Services for Thomas W. ‘Buster’ Durisoe, 88, of the Concord Community near Troup, are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Marc Sharp and Duane Dougherty officiating. Burial, with Military honors, will be in the Concord Cemetery under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup. Mr. Durisoe died Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the Temple V.A. Hospital. He was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Concord to the late William Roper Durisoe and Mary E. Kirkpatrick Durisoe. Mr. Durisoe was a lifetime resident of the Concord Community and was a retired farmer. He also retired as an offshore petroleum worker. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran of World War II, receiving two purple hearts. Mr. Durisoe was featured in the History Channel presentation on the Battle of Okinawa. He was a charter member of the Laney-Gambrell American Legion Post 418, Troup. He married Hazel Hays, Nov. 22, 1947, in Tyler. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Tennison and Ruth Childress. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hazel Durisoe, of Concord; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Laurnie Durisoe, of Concord; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Mike Stillwagon, of Concord, Barbara and Dicky Shuttlesworth, of Arp and Patricia and Paul Kelly, of Houston; grandchildren, Royce and Patricia Jones, of Concord, Jason Luce and Ashley Luce both of Arp; Shannon Kelly, of College Station, and April Kelly, of Houston; three great-grandchildren, Lonnie Jones, Jennifer Jones and Heather Jones; a special family friend, Shelton Parker; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Kerry Wayne Gayle, 51, of Georgetown, passed away unexpectedly in his home Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008. He was born July 27, 1957 in Rusk to Shirley Maxine Hassell Gayle and Kenneth Noel Gayle. Kerry was very active and had a huge heart. He will be missed. He is preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Maxine Gayle; his sister, Kelly Dyan Gayle; and his grandparents, Tommie and Leonard Hassell. He is survived by his father Kenneth Gayle; wife, Peggy Gayle and daughter, Kirbi Gayle. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, Alice Wolff; sisters Kathy McKee and Lenee Oniell; a brother, Keith Gayle; and his nieces and nephews, Casey Bedair, Billy Burton, Timothy, Erica and Bryan Oniell and Kody and Konner Gayle. Bobby Lee Kindle

 

Funeral services for Bobby Lee Kindle, 79, of Jacksonville are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 at Autry Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville with Bishop Gary Murray and Rev. Benny Walker officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Autry Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Tecula Cemetery. Mr. Kindle passed away peacefully at his home Sept. 1. He was born in Gallatin to the late John Willie Kindle and Hazel Gullion Kindle Aug. 3, 1929.He lived in Berryville 33 years before returning to Cherokee County in October of 2004.He was a retired member of Heat and Frost Workers Local 21 Dallas, joining the union in 1952. He retired in 1990.He is preceded in death by both of his parents and a brother Willie Eugene (Dean) Kindle. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Glenda Sue Lake Kindle of Jacksonville; one son Robert Kindle; two daughters Lea Anne Ousley and husband Mark and Kristina Kay Dickerson and husband David; six grandsons, William Vernon Whitely IV, Robert Andrew Kindle and wife Jana, Mackie Lee Wiggins, David Cy Dickerson, Dean Cole Dickerson, and Deason Cash Dickerson; one great-granddaughter Riley Faye Kindle; one sister Wanda Jean Patillo and husband Charlie of San Antonio and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Kindle was a devoted husband, brother, father, and grandfather. His family was everything to him. He was a mentor to so many in his life always wanting others to prosper. His family would like to express its thanks to his caregivers from Legacy Hospice of Tyler who helped to make his last days comfortable and dignified. James William Lade Jr.

 

James William Lade Jr., 55, of Frankston, Texas, saw the face of God on September 25, 2008.Funeral services for Mr. Lade are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, September 28, at First Baptist Church-Frankston with the Rev. Bob Waldman and the Rev. Darin Wood officiating. Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home in Frankston. He was born on October 10, 1952, in Jacksonville, Texas, to James William Lade Sr. and Louise Lade. James was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas. He owned Lade Ford in Frankston, where he was a life-long resident. Jesus Christ was the Lord and Savior of James’ life. His life was a testimony to his faith in Christ, and he loved to witness to anyone about his life and the way God touched him. God walked with him through every trial and celebration in his life. James was a righteous, kind and wise man. Many people sought out his counsel. He also loved his family with all his heart. He was an adoring son, husband, father and PaPa. He loved to have family gatherings, and always sought out projects that would let him spend time with them. James also loved cars and racing. He liked to fix, tinker with, and plan out how to build cars. His favorite part of racing was being a crew chief and helping his fellow racers, even if they were direct competitors. James was preceded in death by his father, James William Lade Sr., and his son, James Jason Lade. Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 18 years, Cherylyn Lade, of Frankston; mother, Louise Lade, of Frankston; brother, Dan Lade of Frankston; sons, Jeremy Lade and wife Celeste of Frankston, Jamey Lade and wife Elizabeth, of Tyler; daughter, Lindsey Line and husband Tim of Tyler; daughter-in-law, Kelsey Lade of Longview; grandchildren, Bailea Line of Tyler, Ethan Lade of Tyler, Hallie Line of Tyler, Kinsey Lade of Longview, and a grandson on the way. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Pallbearers will be Andy Cox, Phillip Allen, James Hefelfinger, Guy Campbell, Gary Koaches and W. T. Jennings. Graveside services for Marcell Laney 86, of Fairfield, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 in the Land Of Memory Cemetery, with the Dr. Barry Roberts officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey and Foster Funeral Home Palestine. Mr. Laney passed away Monday at Palestine Regional Medical Center. He was born April 2, 1922 in Tecula to John and Viola Laney. Mr. Laney was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Herman, John Allen and J.P. Laney; sisters Opal Herron and Ruby Knight. He is survived by his wife of 40-plus years Dorothy Killough Laney; brothers Merrell and Mack Laney; sister Winnie Van Patton; children, nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park, Jacksonville. Mrs. Lanier died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 in Tyler. She was born on June 12, 1920 in Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years Prentice C. Lanier and a grandson Robert Templeton Lanier. Mrs. Lanier was a homemaker and a lifelong Methodist. She is survived by her sons Larry and wife Judy of Tyler and Robert and wife Cathie of Carrollton; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services for JaNiyah Lindsey, 1 month, of Dallas, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 in Mercy-McGowan Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Timmons officiating under the direction of the funeral home. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery in Ponta. Lindsey died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 in Children's Medical Center and born Aug. 11, 2008 in Dallas.

 

 

William May

 

Funeral services for William May, 77, of Rusk are scheduled for 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 in Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lee Welch and Rev. Don Copeland officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mr. May died Sept. 4, 2008 in a Rusk Nursing Home. He was born March 1, 1931 in Brownfield to the late Benjamin and Vera Williams May. Mr. May was a resident of Rusk for 19 years formerly of Sherman. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Rusk and a former president of The Good Samaritan in Rusk for several years. Mr. May was retired from Texas Utilities after 35 years of service and served in the United States Army in the Korean War. Preceded in death by sons Randy May and Jim Wynn; daughter, Laura Waddle; four brothers and one sister. Clarence Mayes

 

Funeral services for Clarence Mayes, 87 of Rusk are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 in the Rusk Church of Christ with Robby Arrington and Rev. Don Copeland officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. Mr. Mayes died Sept. 8, 2008 in a Jacksonville Hospital. He was born June 25, 1921 in San Augustine to Robert Terrell and Annie Weaver Mayes. He attended and excelled at basketball at Melvin School in San Augustine County. After moving to Rusk, he played independent basketball as a member of Rusk Lions Club. He coached the Girls Softball Team, “The Buffs” and in recent years had become an avid Rusk Eagles Sports fan. During the Depression, Mr. Mayes was a Civilian Conservation Corp Boy. He served in the Army Air Corp in World War II and was a member of the Rusk Church of Christ. Mr. Mayes retired from Rusk State Hospital after 33 years of service. Preceded in death by his parents; wife Doris Beard Mayes; wife, Doris Sartain Mayes; daughter, Anita Joy Dill and step son, Donnie Sartain. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Doris Mayes of Athens, John and Tammy Mayes of Humble; daughter, Gloria Francis of Ventura, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Raymond Vermillion of Rusk, Jana and Sam Snider of Frankston; step daughter, Gloria Cumby of Rusk; step daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Wayne Burton of Austin; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Robert Clayton McWherter

 

Memorial services for Robert Clayton McWherter, 88, of Jacksonville are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 at First Christian Church, Jacksonville with Rev. R. G. Ericson officiating. Mr. McWherter passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 in Jacksonville. He was born Feb. 25, 1920 in Gainesville, to Henry Guy McWherter and Katie Lee Munday McWherter. He attended Paris Junior College, Texas Technological University, and the University of Texas at Austin where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering. His 40 years in the aircraft industry included Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, Calif., Vought Aircraft in Grand Prairie, and Fluidyne Engineering in Minneapolis, Minn. When World War II interrupted his education for five years, he was an active fighter pilot in the South Pacific and European Theaters, followed by service in the Korean War. From his early days he was dedicated to his church, wherever he lived, having held offices as deacon and elder, as well as teaching Sunday school classes. Since moving to Jacksonville from El Paso in 2004 he has been a member of the First Christian Church. Mr. McWherter is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jack McWherter and Henry Guy McWherter, Jr. He is survived by his wife Marianna; daughters Betty Kay Apodaca, Gail Kent, Mary Anna Payne and Wendy Chloe Hooper; son Robert William McWherter; grandchildren Todd Walker, Brett Walker, Matt Walker, Jeff Boyce, Jason Boyce, Amy Pruett, Jamie Gail Carter, Will Kent, Katie Walker, Scott Walker, Will Walker, Josh Payne and Tyler Payne and 23 great-grandchildren. Robert N. “Bob” Merritt

 

Robert N. “Bob” Merritt, 76, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 after a long illness. He was born on Wednesday, September 23, 1931. Bob was raised in Jacksonville and attended Jacksonville High School and Lon Morris College. After serving his country in the Korean War he returned home to marry fellow Jacksonville native, Marjorie Reed on Oct. 15, 1955.Bob made his career in the title insurance industry. After a brief stay in several small Texas towns, he and Margie settled in Monahans, where he owned and operated Ward County Abstract. In 1972, Bob moved his family to Conroe to accept a position as manager of Conroe Title Company, where his knowledge, experience and dedication soon brought him to the attention of national underwriter Old Republic Title Insurance Company. Bob remained with Old Republic until retirement, eventually serving as its southwest regional vice-president. In 1994 Bob and Marjie completed the circle of their travels, retuning home to Jacksonville to live in the home his father had built and in which he was raised. Bob enjoyed his retirement spending time with his family, playing golf, hunting and fishing with old friends, delighting in his grandchildren, and serving the Lord and his community as an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Merritt and Sue Dell Meritt of Jacksonville, and his brothers, Herbert Meritt, Jr. of Carlsbad, Calif. and Lee Thomas Merritt of Palestine. He is survived and much loved by his wife of almost 53 years, Marjorie Merritt of Jacksonville; his sisters-in-law Blanche Meritt of Carlsbad Calif. and Ruby Nell Meritt of Palestine; by his children Glynna Sue White and spouse Robert White of Spring and Marianne Merritt and partner Bonnie Patton of Georgetown; and by his grandchildren, Bryan White, Garrett White, Reese Merritt and Savannah Merritt and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Mr. Charles “Charlie” Myers, 86 of Jacksonville, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008 in Tyler. He was born Monday, Sept. 11, 1922 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Mr. Myers was retired as an engineer and was a lifelong member of the Moose Club No. 692 in Greeneville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by parents, father Charles Myers and mother Bertha Melton Myers; and sister Loretta Tiller. Burial will follow at Laneville Cemetery, in Laneville. She will be placed beside her beloved husband and infant daughter. Mrs. Richards died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 in Jacksonville. Mrs. Richards was born Monday, Dec. 01, 1902 in Bolivar, Tenn. to Freeland Tyson Naylor and Ella Becky Motley. The family came to Texas by train when she was 7 years old and settled in the Ponta area. Mrs. Richards married Frank Odeal Richards on Aug.19, 1926. He preceded her in death in 1980 as well as two grandsons in 1978 and 1995 and a son-in-law 2001.Mrs. Richards worked 13 years at the Peacock Basket Factory at Turney and 32 years at the Holcomb Candy Kitchen and sold Avon for 50 years. She always enjoyed gardening quilting, crocheting, cooking and traveling, even into her later years. Most of all she enjoyed her friends and family. She was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Amos Ray and Louise Richards of Jacksonville, O'Daniel James and Patricia Richards of Rusk, Jerry Lee and Sheryl Richards of Huffman, Tyson Odeal and Diane Richards of Sherwood; daughter Mab le Page of Temple; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. James Edwin Shotwell

 

A private memorial service was held in honor of Dr. James Edwin Shotwell, Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2008 at 4 p.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel at Resthaven of Lubbock. Dr. Keith Wiseman officiated the lovely service with Dr. Sigurd Ogaard in charge of the music that was attended by his family. He was born on Aug. 14, 1920, in Jacksonville. Dr. Shotwell was married to Mrs. June Shotwell on Feb. 6, 1948, and they moved to Littlefield where he began his dental practice. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Shotwell had a very active life, centered around his family. He attended Texas Tech University and graduated from Southern Methodist University. He later attended Loyola Dental School in New Orleans. After graduating from dental school he decided to further add knowledge to his career by being a teacher of dentistry at the University of Tennessee Dental School. He also was an instrumental part of the Dental Department at the Lubbock State School. Dr. Shotwell was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Littlefield, and also attended the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock, where he was interested in the choral programs. He was very interested in city government, which allowed him to serve on the city council of Littlefield for three years. He had a perfect attendance in the Littlefield Rotary Club for over fifty-two years plus he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He had made great contributions to the Scholarship Fund of the Littlefield Rotary Club because of the awareness to serve above self. He was a member of the Littlefield Rotary Club, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, The Texas Tech University Chancellor’s Council and The American Dental Society. He also belonged to the first United Methodist Church of Lubbock. His wife June Shotwell preceded him in death, but Dr. James Shotwell has two daughters: Dr. and Mrs. Harry Hall and Mr. and Mrs. Murray Hensley. Minnie and Richard Hernandez who meant the world to him and they are very special friends of the family. Mrs. Slater died Sept. 24, 2008 in a Tyler hospital. She was born Sept. 11, 1912 in Gravelly, Ark. to the late Otho and Ola Montgomery Garner. Formerly of Plainview, Arkansas and Texarkana, Mrs. Slater moved to Jacksonville in 1951 where she was an active member of The Order of Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Bradley Slater and daughter, Susie Chapa. Survivors include a niece, Melba Westbrook, of Dallas; great nephews, Kim Westbrook and Brad Westbrook; son-in-law John Chapa, of San Angelo; grandchildren, Monica, Slater and Marcus; seven great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grand nephews and one great-great-grand niece. Mrs. Starkey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville and was an elementary school librarian for over 40 years in Timpson, Malakoff, Hudson, Madisonville, and Sulphur Springs and retired from Jacksonville ISD in 1984 after 10 years. She was also a member of Eastern Star. She is preceded in death by her husband Norris Starkey; son Mike Starkey; parents Grady and Susie Weesner; and sister Jo Trantham. Survivors include daughter Suzanne Townsend; husband David of Dallas; daughter-in-law Kay Starkey of Dallas; sister Jean Bearden of Jacksonville; granddaughter Lesley Ryan and husband Casey and great-granddaughter Elle Grace Ryan, all of Fort Collins, Co.; and nieces Paula Jones and Patti Blakely. Mrs. Underwood was employed at Irving Independent School District as a maintenance supervisor for 16 years and was a Dallas area resident for 50 years. She was a member of the Hampton Place Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer Davis and Gladys Warren Davis; husband Elmer Underwood; daughter Shirley Whitten; sisters Gladys George and Imola Lovelady; and granddaughter Debra Lindsey. Funeral services for Lenard Lesley “LL” Wilcox, 87, of Rusk, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 2008 in Memorial Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Don Copeland and Rev. Odis Bryan officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home. Mr. Wilcox died Sept. 2 2008 in a Jacksonville hospital. Mr. Wilcox was born May 20 1921 in Bulah, to the late John William and Emma E. Hutchins Wilcox. He was a lifelong resident of Rusk, member of Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, and founding deacon and served as church treasurer for many years. He was a retired mail carrier from the U.S. Postal Service in Rusk, former owner and operator of Wilcox Ice Company and Wilcox Tire Company. He retired from the Rusk Fire Department having served as fire chief and fire marshal. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He loved woodworking, farming, fishing, hunting, family activities, and church activities. He loved his family very much. He was preceded in death by his wife Edna Mae Copeland Wilcox in July 2005 and a son Lenard Ray Wilcox. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and LaRue Wilcox of Rusk; daughter, Laniece Walker of Rusk; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Preston Wilcox of Rusk, Grady and Katherine Wilcox of Rusk, Carl and Billie Wilcox of Rusk; four sisters and brother-in-law. Lora Caperton of Tyler, Jane Naski of Jacksonville, Lorine Hardy of Crockett and Vernine and Bennie Odom of Conroe; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Willie Louise Winship

 

Willie Louise Winship, 89, of Jacksonville, passed away Aug. 25, 2008. She was born June 26, 1919 in Jacksonville to William Horatio Lane and Nina Vanorden Little Lane. Willie Louise was a homemaker and a Presbyterian by faith. She married George R. Winship Sr. on June 5, 1941 in Karnes City. She was an amateur radio operator, loved sewing and gardening, and especially loved being with her grandchildren. She was a 1937 graduate of Karnes City High School. Her survivor’s include her son George Winship Jr. and his wife Nan of Gallatin; son-in-law Ron Green of Rockdale; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter Linda Green. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday Aug. 29, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Karnes City, followed by interment in the Karnes City Cemetery.
