LAURA MAE HICKS
 

Funeral for Laura Mae Hicks, 72, of Rusk, was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Mount Olive Baptist Church. Burial was in Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Hicks died Feb. 20. She attended Grapeland public schools and was a housekeeper and a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, Lonzo Hicks of Rusk; four sons, Johnny Hicks, Charles Hicks, Bobby Hicks and Thomas Hicks, all of Rusk; three daughters, Charlene Mitchell of Alto, Shirley Hicks and Christene Hicks, both of Rusk; five brothers, Nathaniel Johnson, Crevesta Johnson, Gene Johnson, Frank Johnson and Michael Wayne Johnson, all of Houston; two sisters, Doris J. Calhoun and Glenda Johnson, both of Houston; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of Mercy/Mc- Gowan Funeral Directors.

JEAN WALLEY

Funeral for Jean Walley, 81, of Rusk, was at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Autry Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Don Copeland officiating. Burial was in McDonald Cemetery.

Mrs. Walley died Feb. 26. She was born Feb. 11, 1927, in Iams, Iowa, to John Randall and Sarah McDonald Strain. She was a Baptist and retired therapist technician at Rusk State Hospital.

Survivors are husband Roy Walley of Rusk; seven sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Judy Liles of Arlington, Mickey and Robin Liles, Mark Walley, Butch and LaRae Walley, Mike and Mary Walley, Jimmy and Peggy Walley, Robert and Debbie Walley, all of Rusk; two daughters Rebecca and Don Vandever and Becky and Elbert Ballew, all of Rusk; brother and sister-in-law, John and Strain of LaGrande, Iowa; and sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Bud Furst of Boone, Iowa; 33 grandchildren; and 65 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers.

HOWARD GLENN HENDERSON

Funeral for Howard Glenn Henderson, 59, formerly of the Pine Hill community, was at 1 p.m. Feb. 29, at the Rock Hill Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Julia Session, Elder Vernon Reed, Elder Thurman Reed, the Rev. James Fuller and Elder Alford Garrett officiating. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Henderson died Feb. 21. He was born Feb. 29, 1948, in Jacksonville and attended school at New Summerfield. He received his early training at the Pine Hill Church of God in Christ. He was a Cherokee County retiree.

Preceding him in death was his father, Oscar Henderson.

Survivors are his mother, Lorene Freeny of Jacksonville; a daughter and son-in-law, Nakia and Keylon Kincade of Dallas; a step-daughter, Lea Suance of Tyler; a brother, James Henderson of Long Beach, Calif.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Laura and Melvin Morris and Druscilla Jessie, all of Long Beach; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Dallas Kincade, Melvin T. Morris, Larry Henderson, Melvin Alexander, Billie Jones and Floyd Story.

Honorary pallbearers were Thurmun Reed Jr., Willie Reed, Gary Reed, Clifton Reed, Curtis McEwing, Milford Reed and Frist Cousins.

GARRY G. RASOR

Graveside service for Garry G. Rasor, 64, of Rusk will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Grandview Memorial Park Cemetery in Pasadena with Jerry Fite officiating.

Mr. Rasor died March 2. He was born April 3, 1943 in Houston to Winston and Myra Nell Clark Rasor.

He was a resident of Rusk for five years and formerly lived in Pasadena.

He was a member of Church of Christ in Greenville. He was a telecommunications engineer for MCI Worldcom.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict.

Survivors are his wife Charlene Rasor of Rusk; mother, Myra Nell McDonald of Pasadena; stepson, Patrick Turner of Atlanta, Ga.; brother and sister in-law, Kenneth and Debbie McDonald of Diboll;, sister, Cindy Kirby of Pasadena; aunt, Leona Nash of Pasadena.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home.

CLINON "(BIT) THOMPSON

Funeral for Clinon "Bit" Thompson, 71, of Nacogdoches, was at 2 p.m. Sunday in Gipson Funeral Home chapel in Lufkin, with Josh Lindsey and Joe Carriere officiating.

Burial was in Simpson Cemetery. Mr. Thompson died Feb. 28. He was born Jan. 15, 1937, in Angelina County to the late Laura Choate and Robert Lee Thompson. He was a road construction worker.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Thompson of Nacogdoches; two daughters, Sandy Pate of Rusk, and Shelia Grimes of Henderson; a stepson, John Nolley, of Houston; two sisters, Janice James of Lufkin, and Glenda McKinney of Chandler; a brother, Marshall Ray Thompson of Rusk; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

  VIRGINIA LORENE RICHARDS ENER

Virginia Lorene Richards Ener died Feb. 25 in Alto. She was born in Cushing June 6, 1913, to Oliver L. and Carrie Richards. The funeral was at 10 a.m. Feb. 28 at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor. Burial was in Restlawn Memorial Park, Vidor. Mrs. Ener graduated as valedictorian of her high school class at Cushing. She received a bachelor of science degree in 1939 from Stephen F. Austin Teachers College and a masters of education in 1959 from the University of Houston. She taught business and English classes in Alto, Tarkington Prairie and Vidor.

She was an artist and painted many baptistry scenes for churches in East Texas. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, an honorary teacher's society, retired Teachers Association and TSTA. She was preceded in death by her husband Bency Nay Ener; parents; four sisters and two brothers. Survivors are her sisters-in-law, Era Lee Richards and Helen Richards; and several nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity.

ELLEN LUCILLE DEAN SIDES

Funeral for Ellen Lucille Dean Sides, 83, of Austin was at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 at memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden Capital Parks in Austin.

Mrs. Sides died Feb. 23. She was born Jan. 21, 1925, in Rusk.

She married her childhood sweetheart in June 1945. They lived in Palestine and moved to Houston in 1951. She was active in community, church and scouting.

They moved to Austin in September 1967, where she was the nursery director at Baptist Church for 20 years and a teacher at Hyde Park Preschool. In Austin she was a volunteer with the Austin Steam Train Association.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Embery James Sides; her parents and siblings.

Survivors are her daughter, Lenda Marie Sides; her son and daughter-in-law, James Welton and Mary Katherine Sides; her granddaughter and her husband, Katherine and Jesse Pena; grandson and his wife, James and Kellie Michelle Sides; great-grandchildren, Leighann Pena, Christopher Lee and Justin Cole Sharp, Caleb James and Nathan David Sides and Kayla Katherine Pena who was born on her 82nd birthday; four sisters-in law, Claire Sides, Helen Sides, Mildred Munsinger and Agnes Dean; two brothers-in-law, A.D. Munsinger and Jimmy Spraggins; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Austin or the American Cancer Society.

EDNA M. (LINDA) GADDIS GABLE

Memorial services for Edna M. (Linda) Gaddis Gable, 73, of Tyler was at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Tyler.

Ms. Gable died Feb. 16. She was born March 17, 1934, in Arp to Hub and Linnie Gilbreath Gaddis. She was a nurses' aid and lived in Tyler before moving to Rusk.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Glen Gaddis; and three sisters, Mary Gaddis, Sue Driver and Frances May. Survivors are a nephew, Robert May of Tyler; niece, Nancy May of Tyler; four great-nephews, Karl May, Shawn May, Robert May Jr. and Chris May; two great-nieces, Sylvia and Katie May; one great-great-nephew Nathan; good friend, Dixieanna Upton of Tyler. Local arrangements were under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk.

MABLE E. SADLER

Funeral for Mable E. Sadler, 84, of Rusk was at 1 p.m., Friday, March 7, in the Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Nied and the Rev. Don Copeland officiating. Burial was in Old Palestine Cemetery. Mrs. Sadler died March 4. She was born Sept. 11, 1923, in Rusk to John and Eva Arnold Boone. She was a life long Cherokee County resident and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was nursery coordinator for First Baptist Church in Rusk and Calvary Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Sadler retired from Rusk State Hospital on May 31, 1998, after 19.5 years of service. Preceding her in death was her husband, Carl Marion Sadler.

Survivors are three sons and daughters-in-law, Louis and Karen Sadler, Randy and Terrie Sadler and Rickey and Lucille Sadler, all of Gallatin; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Randy Sadler, Louis Sadler, Keith Clements, Jory Sadler, Caleb Sadler and Cory Spurlock.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wallace- Thompson Funeral Home.

VERNELL BURNS THOMPSON

Funeral for Vernell Burns Thompson, 75, of Tyler, formerly of Sacul, was at 1 p.m. Saturday at the New Faith Church of Sacul with the Rev. Ausbie Earl, the Rev. Earnest Dixon and Bishop G. Land Jr. officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park at Nacogdoches.

Mrs. Thompson died March 4. She was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Sacul. She was educated in Nacogdoches County and lived in Tyler for several years. She was a member of St. Land Temple Church of Deliverance in Tyler.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Frank Albert Thompson and her parents, Lottie D. and Naomi Burns.

Survivors are six sons, Hollis Mallard and Johnny Thompson, both of Sacul, Frank Thompson, Henry Thompson, John Albert Thompson and Lyndon Thompson, all of Nacogdoches; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Cecelia Mc- Gurie of Dallas, Patricia and Jethro Norris of Nacogdoches, Doris Deckard of Rusk, Pamela Ward of Houston and Verline and Rev. Danny Hampton of Tyler; 31 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Johnny Thompson, Frank Thompson, Lyndon Thompson, Henry Thompson, John Thompson and Hollis Mallard.

Grandsons were honorary pallbearers.

Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

ANNIE MYRLE FREEMAN DICUS

Annie Myrle Freeman Dicus of Kaufman, formerly of Jacksonville, died March 4. She was born May 11, 1914, in Frankston and had lived in Kaufman since 1995.

She was a member of Grace Fellowship Baptist Church in Kaufman. She was a retired seamstress beginning her career in World War II making Army tents. After her retirement she was the baby sitter for the Swanson and Autry families of Jacksonville.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Buford L. Dicus; four brothers, Eugene, Dan, Tommy and Frank Freeman, a sister, Floreed E Kimbrough; and a great-grandson, Ikaika Thomas.

Survivors are a son and a daughter-in-law, Albert L. and Lorna Dicus, of Honolulu, Hawaii; one daughter, Louise and Danny Hazelip of Scurry; two brothers, Jesse Milburn Freeman of Springtown and T.D. Freeman of Houston; five grandsons; one granddaughter; six great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. March 8 at Olive Branch Cemetery at Brushy Creek with the Rev. G.C. Folmar officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Autry Funeral Home.

WANDA SUE DIRDEN

Funeral for Wanda Sue Dirden, 65, of Jacksonville was at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Sweet Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Horace Williams, the Rev. Claudell Anderson and the Rev. Julia Session officiating. Burial was in Jacksonville City Cemetery. Ms. Dirden died March 3. She was born June 30, 1942, in Jacksonville. She graduated from Fred Douglas High School in 1960, and was a member of Sweet Union Baptist Church. She retired from Drom Trane.

Her parents, D. Meador and Lucille Dirden preceded her in death. Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen C. and Theresa Dirden of Pomona, Calif.; two daughters, Stacey Thirkill of Jacksonville and Demetra Lacy of Flint; two brothers, Jerry Lacy of Houston and Chester Lacy Sr. of Jacksonville; four sisters, Lucy Lacy of Houston, Jackalyne Ross and Phebe Lacy of Jacksonville and Gayla Lacy of Misawa, Japan; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Richard Whitaker, Roderick Erwin, Clynell Anderson, Billy J. Williams Sr., George Horn, Claude Armstrong, Maharold Peoples, Christopher Dirden and Jerry Lacy. Honorary pallbearers were deacons and trustee of the Sweet Union Baptist Church and Rickey Meador.

  EDWIN JONES

 Graveside service for Edwin Jones, 84, of Rusk was at 2 p.m. Sunday at Walker's Chapel Cemetery in Reklaw with the Rev. R.S. Dyess and the Rev. Mike Bradford officiating.

Mr. Jones died March 6. He was born July 14, 1923, in Reklaw to Lynn and Alice Irwin Jones.

After high school, he served in the Army during World War II as a member of a field survey party in New Guinea and the South Philippines. He served three years and attained the rank of Sergeant of the 1874th Engineer Aviation Battalion. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal and an American Theater Campaign Medal. After his military service, he attended Henderson County Junior College. Mr. Jones was employed as a nurse technician for the Rusk State Hospital for 30 years before retiring in 1983. He was an ordained deacon and song leader at Reklaw Baptist Church and Eastside Baptist Church in Rusk.

Preceding him in death were a son, Edwin Kent Jones; a son in law, Kerry Cummins; and three sisters, Mary Thrash, Hazel Dalby and Lois Shankles.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Janie Lou White Jones; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Byron and Rhonda Jones of Gun Barrel City, Gary Jones of Reklaw and Terry and Lesa Jones of Rusk; a daughter, Janis Cummins of Rusk; a sister, Mavis Parrott of Reklaw; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Grandsons Eric Jones, Cary Jones, Zachary Jones, Matthew Jones, Brent Jones, Forrest Jones and Garrett Jones served as pallbearers.

SHEILA ANN WALLACE

Funeral for Sheila Ann Wallace, 59, of Montalba was at 2 p.m., Tuesday in the Wallace Thompson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Johnny Emerson officiating. Burial was in Russell Cemetery on FM 23.

Mrs. Wallace died March 7. She was born Dec. 19, 1948, in Riverside, Calif. to Milton and Martha Beasley Singletary.

She was a resident of Montalba and formerly lived in Rusk. She was a member of Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in Rusk and a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She was preceded in death by a brother, Mickey Singletary; mother-in law and father-in-law, Mildred and Walter Wallace; and stepmother, Klara Singletary.

Survivors are her husband, Bill Wallace of Montalba; son and daughter-in-law, Gail and Denise Wallace of Rusk; daughter and son-in-law, Yolanda and Don Gutierrez of Albuquerque, N. M.; father, Milton Singletary of Reklaw; mother and stepfather, Martha and Kenneth Birdwell of Lake Striker; sister and brother-in-law, Lanette and Wayne Cox of Reklaw; four grandchildren, Stormy Wallace, Wendy Wallace and Billy Wallace all of Rusk and Dylan Gutierrez of Albuquerque; sister in-law and brother-in-law, Treva and Pete Hernandez of Bowie, Ariz.; step-brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Rhonda Birdwell of Rusk; stepsister, Jana Birdwell of Hudson, Colo.; sister-in-law, Barbara Singletary of Maydelle; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

RUBY B. PHILLIPS

Funeral for Ruby Bessie Phillips of Dayton, formerly of Jacksonville, was at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Autry Funeral Home.

Mrs. Phillips died March 7. She was born on Oct. 29, 1915.

She was preceded in death by her husband, T.E. Phillips.

Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Joann and Ernest Fields; a son, Joe Thomas Phillips; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Steve Fields, Kevin Fields, Joey McWilliams, Earl Wayne Hammons and Roger Hammons.

MARIE MARTIN MERRIWETHER

Funeral for Marie Merriwether, 82, of Alto was at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Randy Fitzgerald and the Rev. Dick Dobbins officiating. Burial was in Alto City Cemetery.

Mrs. Merriwether died Sunday. She was born Jan. 22, 1924, in Houston County to Otis and Mae Rushing Martin. Her family lived in Trinity and Cherokee counties. She was living in Wells when she met and married J.R. Merriwether, who preceded her in death. She lived most of her life in Alto was worked at the theater ticket booth. She also worked packing tomatoes, grading eggs and for International Paper Co. She retired while working for Southwestern Electric Service Co. She was a member of A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church and the Downtown Bible Class.

Also preceding her in death were a sister, Janie Martin; and brothers, A.G., Otis Jr. and Milton Martin.

Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Larry Griffith of Alto; two sisters, Wilma Smith of Lufkin and Annette Thompson of Rusk; two brothers, William Martin of Crockett and Morris Martin of Mesquite; grandchildren, John and Kimberly Griffith and Kyle and DeAnna Griffith, all of Alto; great-grandchildren, Kade, Presley, Mason and Ryan Griffith; special friend Coy Allen of Carrollton; numerous nieces and nephews.

DIXIE DOLCATER

Graveside service for Dixie Dolcater, 92, of Lockwood, Mo., formerly of Alto, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the New Energy Cemetery with Josh Lindsey officiating.

Mrs. Dolcater died Friday. She was born Nov. 5, 1915, in Belott to Arthur A. and Mertie Price Thomasson. She was a member of the Hilltop Baptist Church, the Order of the Easter Star and served on the Alto City Council for several years. She graduated from Alto High School and from Amarillo College.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert G. Dolcater; a daughter, Dixie Deanna McGinnis; granddaughter, Marcy Lynn Sapienza and three brothers, Cleon Thomasson, Cyrus Thomasson and Lacy Thomasson.

Survivors are two daughters, Sharron Melancon of Church Point, La. and Sylvia Lopez of Golden City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

MILDRED BOYER

Funeral for Mildred Boyer 95, of Elkhart, was at 10 a.m. Friday at the Elkhart First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Gernenz officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories. Mrs. Boyer died March 11. She was born April 2, 1912, in Wood County, to Romney Cleveland and Maggie Lou Laney Griffith. Mrs. Boyer was a member of the Elkhart First Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star No. 395 of Palestine and Pilgrim Homemakers Club in Elkhart. She graduated from Palestine High School in 1931.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Charles Russell Boyer; two brothers Earl and Albert Griffith; three sisters Hazel Hamby, Faye Honeycutt and Christine Dancer.

She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Gentry of Palestine; and several nieces and nephews, James Hamby, Susie Blackmon, Barbara Dancer Tidwell, Eddie Dancer, Sherry Shirley, Milton Griffith, Gilbert Griffith, Rayburn Griffith, Sue Griffith, Cindy Griffith, Bobby Griffith, Kenneth Honeycutt, Darrel Gentry, Mike Gentry and Kim Gentry Rinderkinect.

DORIS JONES

Funeral for Doris Jones, 85, of Dialville, was at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Rocky Springs Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Swilling presiding. Burial was in the Rocky Springs Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones was born and reared in Dialville. She married B. F. Jones, and they had three children while residing in Texas and then moved to Tucson, Ariz.. They moved back to Dialville a few years ago. Doris worked in a variety of jobs including school bus driver, post office worker and real estate broker. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, B. F. Jones.

Survivors are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Roland Jones of Dialville and Bryan and Kim Jones of Bellingham, Wash., a daughter and son-in-law: Elaine Jones and husband Paul of Tucson, Ariz., a brother and sister-in-law: J. P. and Alice Sides of Henderson; seven grandchildren and spouses, Dan and Carla Baranowski, Nick and Nicole Baranowski, Emily Simon, Samantha Simon, Adelia Jones, Kelsey Jones, Jason and Danielle Jones; one great granddaughter: Morgan Jones; and several nieces and nephews. A.J. WYATT

Funeral services for A.J. Wyatt, 81, lifelong Jacksonville resident, was at 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Thrift officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Mr. Wyatt died March 12. He was born in Itasca April 27, 1926, to Carl Wesley Wyatt and Rosie Berth Reed Wyatt.

He was a disabled veteran, serving his country as a sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Martha Wyatt; and a brother, James Wyatt.

Survivors are a son, Sammy Wyatt of Clio, S.C.; a grandson, Brian Wyatt of Clio; a brother, C.W. Wyatt of Jacksonville; a sister, Bertha Jones of Jacksonville; numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Glen Wyatt, Jeffery McIntyre, Bobby Wyatt, Bill Jones, Jimmy Wyatt, James Jones and Jerry Jones. Arrangements were under the direction of Autry Funeral Home.

ROBERT WADE BUCKLAND

Memorial service for Robert Wade Buckland, 24, of Nederland, formerly of Alto, was at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Fellowship Baptist Church in Nederland.

Mr. Buckland died March 10. He was born Feb. 26, 1984, in Lufkin to Arliff (Buck) and Shirley Buckland. He lived in Nederland and was a heavy equipment operator for Total Demolition Co.

Survivors are his father, Arliff E. (Buck) Buckland of Corpus Christi; his mother, Shirley Timberlake of New Mexico; a sister, Allison Marie Buckland of Nederland; a brother, William Andrew Buckland of Baytown. O.T. Allen & Son was in charge of arrangements.

   MARY LUCILLE DOVER

Funeral for Mary Lucille Dover, 88, of Jacksonville, was at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Autry Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dale Jamerson officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery.

Mrs. Dover died March 12. She was born May 6, 1919, in Atoy, to Gordie and James Wilbur (Whitt) Lanier. She married Leldon L. Dover December 21, 1938. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Ruby Sutton.

Mrs. Dover lived in Jacksonville for the last 58 years. She previously lived in Alto. She worked at Discount City for many years and was a member of the Sunset Baptist Church.

Funeral for Anita Wright Bradford, 87, of Tomball, formerly of Alto, was at 11 a.m. Saturday in the A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dick Dobbins officiating. Burial was at 2 p.m. in Laneville Cemetery.

Mrs. Bradford died Wednesday. She was born July 24, 1919, in Henderson to Joseph Hansel and Georgia Pollard Wright. She lived most of her life in Alto and was a member of the A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church. She attended the Alto Thursday Study Club and worked as a bookkeeper for Bauman Lumber and Whiteman Foods.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Doug Bradford; three brothers and four sisters.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Noel and Sylvia Bradford of Cypress; a daughter and son-in-law, Becky and John Dutch of Magnolia; five grandchildren, Noel Bradford Jr., Chad Bradford, Jeff Bradford, Jason Bradford and Nathan Dutch; eight great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kathleen, Connor, Laura, Keith, Jeffery II, Caroline and Justin.

Mrs. Lloyd died March 13. She was born Dec. 25, 1927, in Athens to Harry Robison and Trudie McDonald. She was a homemaker and a Presbyterian. Preceding her in death were her husband, Woodrow Lloyd; two daughters, Becky Johns and Dianne Mueller; a son, Donald Lloyd; and a brother, Don Rex Robison.

Mrs. Hodges died Saturday. She was born May 23, 1926, in Wells to George Carol and Jettie Ann Vinson Goodwin. She lived most of her life in Wells and was a member of the Living Waters Church. She worked at Lufkin State School for 10 years and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Hodges; a brother, Denman (Buddy) Goodwin; and a son-inlaw, Garland Parise. Mr. Gattis died Saturday. He was born Nov. 9, 1924, in Jacksonville to Carl Dennis and Neoma Partin Gattis. He lived most of his life in Jacksonville and was a Baptist. Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, James T. Gattis; and a nephew, David Michael Sides. Survivors are his sister, Willie Townley of Jacksonville; four nieces, Linda Jean Watson, Diane Cavazos, Kay Stevens and Lisa Odom.

Ms. Briley died March 15. She was born Jan. 30, 1989, in Tyler to Ben and DeAnna Parsons Briley. She lived in Jacksonville most of her life, where she was a member of Central Baptist Church.

She was a 2007 graduate of Rusk High School and was employed by Jordan's Health Care Services.

Preceding her in death were her grandmother, Mary Alyce Parsons; two great grandmothers, Norma Briley and Wilma Cenac; and aunt, Angela Levy.

RHS graduate killed in single-car accident

A 2007 graduate of Rusk High School was killed Saturday morning when her 2004 Mazda MX6 left the roadway, striking a tree on FM 343 east of Rusk. Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Eric Long said Ashley Briley, daughter of Deanna Briley of Jacksonville and Ben and Tracy Briley of Jacksonville, was traveling east on FM 343 approximately five miles east of U.S. Highway 69 when she lost control of her vehicle and hit a tree. Trooper Long said a high rate of speed was a factor in the accident. Miss Briley died at the scene of the accident, Trooper Long said. The accident happened at approximately 9 a.m. Saturday.

MARGIE MARIE MORRIS

Funeral for Margie Marie Morris, 82, of Jacksonville was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Renfro Memorial Chapel of the Boren-Conner Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Munsinger officiating. Burial was in Taylor Cemetery at Gallatin.

Mrs. Morris died March 16. She was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Ennis. She was a lifelong Gallatin resident, a housewife and a member of the Gallatin Baptist Church. Preceding her in death were her husband, Cecil Morris and parents, Marvin Ester and May Harris Blackwelder.

Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Goff died March 17. She was born March 26, 1926, in Rusk to the late William Wesley and Fronie Ford Mainer. She was a lifelong Rusk resident and a member of the Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She retired from Rusk State Hospital after 21 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. (T.H.) Goff, Feb. 16, 2006; and stepbrother, R. V. Mainer. She is survived by her son and daughter in-law, Darrell and Lavonne Goff of Dialville; brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Lela Mae Mainer of Maydelle; stepgrandson and his wife, Richard and Rhonda Free of Cuney; and step-granddaughter, Jennifer Dotson of Rusk. Mrs. Conaway died March 17. She was born July 5, 1910, in Anderson County to Fred William and Mattie Maude Fields Collier.

Mrs. Conaway was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Boyd Link Conaway; two sons, Jay Conaway and James Conaway; a granddaughter, Cindy Conaway; four sisters, Lou Collier, Nina Collier Thomas, Vera Collier Hix and Lela Collier Carr.

Mr. Broach died T March 18. He was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Appleby to Otis Allen and Ruthie Lee Laws Broach. He lived most of his life in Cherokee County and was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church. He was a World War II Navy veteran, and worked as a self-employed plumber for 33 years. He taught Bible school at the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville and later at Eastside Baptist in Rusk.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bertrum (Mutt) Broach and Milton (Tot) Broach; sisters, Mary Greening, Mamie Childress and Gladys Latham Solley; and a great-grandson, John Christopher Brougher.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Alma Petty Broach of Rusk; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Melinda Broach of Jacksonville; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Victor Whadford of Rusk; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Otis Earl (Bud) and Sue Broach of Rusk and Lewis and Donna Broach of Washington; a sister, Nezzie Higgins of Pollok; grandchildren and spouses Chris Broach, Laura and Lacey Wilcox, Lana and Paul Rawlinson, and Sarah Whadford; great-grandchildren, Taylor Brougher, Elisabeth Brougher, Luke Prosise, Benjamin Prosise, Ashlynne Rawlinson and Destiny Rawlinson.

Mr. Pearson died March 21. He was born March 30, 1930, in Rusk to Jessie Edward and Laura Lee Massey Pearson. He was a lifelong resident of Rusk and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

He retired from Rusk State Hospital in 1993 after 32 years of service.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Jessie Estelle Pearson and Earnest Pearson; and a sister, Nola Horton.

Survivors are his wife of 58 years, Mona Pearson of Rusk; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny Leon and Tamara Pearson of Rusk; two daughters, Doyla Ann Cannon of Tyler and Brenda Gayle Mozingo of Kansas City, Kan.; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Howard Walker of Rusk; four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

TED THOMPSON

Memorial services for Billy Ted Thompson ("Ted") was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Tyler with Pastor Art Hill officiating.

He was born Feb. 22, 1938, in Freer, and died March 21.

Ted grew up on the farm outside of Jacksonville, graduated from Jacksonville High School and Stephen F. Austin State University. He and his high school teammates played their way to the only state basketball championship in the school's history. He was a newspaper reporter for the Tyler Courier Times-Morning Telegraph and later retired from the Jacksonville Daily Progress. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Frazier Thompson in 1981 and Opal lsaacks Thompson in 2007; and his sister, Norma Lou Cupp in 2004; two daughters, Laurie Ann Thompson in 1961 and Sarah Kathryn Thompson in 2005.

Survivors are his wife of 31 years, Carol Paar Thompson of Tyler; daughters and a sonin law, Lisa Kay and Greg Dodd of Rockton, Ill. and Traci Elizabeth Wilson of Conway, Ark.; his grandchildren, Kayla Wilson of Hot Springs, Ark. and Will Wilson of Conway, Ark. and Caroline, Colin, Alec and Kylie Rose Dodd of Rockton, Ill.; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Herb Paar (Doris) of Lake Palestine East; his brother-in-law and sister-in law, Steven and Cindy Paar of Tyler; a nephew, Don Cupp of Tyler; a niece, Jean Ann Cupp of Hartley.

She was born March 25, 1918, in Royse City, to Louis and Mae Anderson. She attended the Methodist Church. Mrs. Darby taught school in New Summerfield, Spring Hill, Carlile and Rusk, retiring after 30 years of service. She and husband, B.R. Darby, co-owned Darby Greenhouses in New Summerfield.

Mrs. Darby was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Ken Darby. She is survived by her husband, B.R. Darby of New Summerfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Patricia Darby of New Summerfield; a sister, Nell Young of Winters, Calif.; three grandchildren and a grandson-in-law, Jennifer and Jason Lambright, Kelly Snyder and Lauren Darby; one great-grandchild, Sydney Snyder; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hancock died Easter Sunday, March 23. He was born March 2, 1923, in Rusk and was a long-long resident. He was a Baptist, a Master Mason and received a certificate and pin for more than 50 years of service from the Masonic Lodge of Rusk. He was a retiree from The Texas Department of Corrections, where he worked for more than 27 years. He was a warden in Maxwell security and worked at several of the Texas Prisons. He was also a member for several years with the Sheriffs' Association of Texas.

Preceding him in death were his son, Caroll James Hancock; his brothers and sisters, Leonard Edward Hancock, Billie Jack Hancock, Edna Merl Dickson, Sarah Grace Reid and Henry Hancock; his parents, William (Bill) Caver Hancock and Ida (Moffett) Hancock.

He had lived in Tyler for the past 20 years. He was a financial services professional for New York Life Insurance Company and a member of the First Baptist Church of Tyler. He was also a past board member of the Smith County Red Cross, and Chairman of the Contact Club for the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce. Survivors are his wife of 11 years, Judy Nolley; two daughters, Olivia Nolley and Alicia Nolley, both of Tyler; his parents, Frazier and Bobbie Nolley of Jacksonville; a brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Teri Nolley of Flint; and a nephew, Trevor Nolley.

Pallbearers will be David Stewart, John Breedlove, Steve Hunt, Chance Knight, Ben Hamilton, Larry McMakin and Clay Mitchell.

BILLY M. BIRMINGHAM

Memorial for Billy M. Birmingham will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Autry Funeral Home.

Mr. Birmingham died March 22. He was born in Victoria July 9, 1946. In 1964, he attended Sam Houston State University on a music scholarship, and became a member of the Phi Mu Alpha. He quit school to be drafted into the U.S. Army. Upon returning home, he returned to college while working for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. In 1979, he received his Masters Degree in criminology. After more than 28 years with the prison system, he retired to fulfill his dream of living in East Texas.

Both he and son, Cole, are members of the International Tae Kwon Do Alliance, and hold second degree black belts. In the past couple of years, he acted in the Rusk Cherokee Civic Theatre. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Shelly Marie. Surviving him are his wife, Katherine Carroll Birmingham; son, Joshua Cole Birmingham; his parents, Bill and Marie Birmingham of Rusk; sister and brother-inlaw, Kathy and Dick Schmidt of San Antonio; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Fran Birmingham of Rusk; nieces Leanne, Dana, Sarah, Kim, Karmin, Hannah and nephew, Noah; two adult children, Amy Beth and James Martin, and three grandchildren, Kindal, Alexis and Piper, of Huntsville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America and Disabled American Veterans.

NORMA MOSELEY

Graveside service for Norma Moseley, 77, of Sulphur, La., formerly of Alto, was March 25 at the Old Palestine Cemetery with the Rev. Odis Bryan officiating. Mrs. Moseley died March 20. She was born Aug. 17, 1930, to Lester and Ora Belle Cooper, who preceded her in death.

She attended high school in Houston and had been a resident of the Maplewood/Sulphur area since 1967. She married Charles Moseley Sept. 27, 1947. She and her husband founded Aluminum Recycling of Sulphur. Survivors include her husband, Charles Moseley of Sulphur; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Denise Moseley of Lynnhaven, Fla., Scott and Christine Moseley of Sulphur and Michael and Cindy Moseley of Camden, Ark. a brother, Billy Fred Cooper of Guadalajara, Mexico; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Odyssey Hospice in Mrs. Moseley's name, 1639-A Ryan St., Lake Charles, La. 70601.

DOROTHY C. TIDWELL RHOADES

Graveside service for Dorothy C. Tidwell Rhoades, 87, of Temple will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Jacksonville under the direction of Autry Funeral Home. Mrs. Rhoades died Saturday. She was born Feb. 27, 1921, near Alto to Clyde Carter and Ila Mae Stancil Tidwell. She graduated from Rusk High School and Scott & White School of Nursing in Temple. She received her bachelors' of science degree from the University of Texas and her masters' degree in nursing from the University of Washington.

In August, 1942 she was appointed as Ensign, Nurse Corps, US Navy (Reserves) and served at Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif. and Aiea Hts. in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was released to inactive duty in 1945 and recalled to active duty in 1951 for the Korean War and was appointed to the regular Navy in 1957 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. She was commissioned to the rank of Commander in 1964 and remained on active duty until her retirement in 1968. On her second tour of duty at Naval Hospital in San Diego she met and married Frank Rhoades, longtime columnist for the San Diego Union newspaper. They bought a home there and she eventually retired and lived there until after his death in 1983.

In 1986, she moved to Tyler to be near her mother and other family members in Jacksonville and Temple. She was a member of St Francis Episcopal Church in Tyler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clyde Tidwell Jr. and Douglas Tidwell; and a sister, Marie Tidwell Hesterley. Survivors include a sister, Betty Tidwell Traylor of Temple; a brother, Tracy Tidwell of Jacksonville; several nieces and nephews.

  RAYMOND S. DUVALL JR.

Memorial services for Raymond S. Duvall Jr., 94, of Jacksonville, formerly of Houston, will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, at Autry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Barbara Hugghins and the Rev. Kevin King officiating. Burial will be Thursday, March 27, at the Houston National Cemetery.

Mr. Duvall died Easter Sunday, March 23. He was born Oct. 30, 1913, in Big Spring to Lena Belle and Raymond S. Duvall Sr. He was a 1931 graduate of Sunset High School in Dallas. He also graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1936 with a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce. While at SMU, he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity and Alpha Kappa Psi professional fraternity.

Mr. Duvall served four years active duty in the U. S. Navy during World War II, plus eight years of inactive duty, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During his active duty time he was a Naval Inspector of Ordinance in Hamilton, Ohio, for 18 months, and then an Ordinance Officer for 23 months in the South Pacific on the staff of Commander Service Squadron South Pacific Force. Mr. Duvall worked for the Borden Company for 37 years. He lived in Houston from 1956-2003 when he moved to Jacksonville to be closer to family. Mr. Duvall was a long-time member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Houston where he served many years as head usher.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmeta D. Duvall; parents, Lena Belle and Raymond S. Duvall Sr.; and his sister, Mary Elizabeth Shelton. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Tina Sorrell of Jacksonville and Mimi and Craig Kotz of Granger; grandchildren, Ray Sorrell and wife Cynthia of Missouri City, Elizabeth Wade and husband Greg, of Jacksonville, Robert Kotz of Chicago, and Kathryn Kotz of New York City, great grandchildren Lexie Sorrell, Grayson Sorrell, and Lauren Elizabeth Wade, nieces Nancy Bratic and husband Walt of Houston, Sally Shelton and husband Ted Gehrig of Boston, and nephew Jim Shelton and wife Susie of Plano. Honorary Pallbearers are Ray Sorrell, Robert Kotz, Greg Wade, Craig Kotz, Walt Bratic and Jim Shelton.
