Sybil Vaughan Dickey 1/28/1946 -1/31/2007

Sybil Vaughan Dickey of Bullard passed away on January 31, in Dallas after a lengthy illness. She was born January 28, 1946 to Verdell & Lois Vaughan. Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday, February 3 at Autry Funeral Home Chapel, with Dan Manuel, Donnie Barron, and Glen Cogburn officiating, burial will follow in Bullard Cemetery.

Mrs. Dickey was employed at Joe Wright Elementary School in Jacksonville for 13 years. She was an active member of Ponta Church of Christ, and was an avid supporter of the Walk for Life.

She is survived by her husband, Louis Dickey, Bullard; one son & daughter-in-law, Craig & Brenda Dickey, Troup; three grandchildren, Kaleb, Tyler & McClane Dickey, Troup; brothers & sisters-in-law, Connie & Karen Vaughan, Bullard & Freddie & Tammy Vaughan, Troup; one sister & brother-in-law, Sallye & Terry Cowan, Bullard; and several nieces and nephews. Also her extended family, Sara & Lamar Slover, Laura & Sarah Dupree, Chance & Charlie Moore, & Mason & Taylor Fredrick, and a host of friends.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jackie Slover, Scott Moore, Wade Fredricks, Doug Dupree, Charles Ray & Gary Tipton. Honorary pallbearers are Wilson Folden & Jim Franklin.

Visitation will begin on Friday, February 2, with family receiving friends from 4 pm to 7 pm at the funeral home.

Neta Jewell Bishop 08/29/1945 -1/30/2007

Funeral services are scheduled for Neta Jewell Bishop, 61 of Jacksonville for Friday, February 2, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Autry Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow at Earle's Chapel Cemetery.

Beth Ann Rogers 3/11/1948 -1/8/2007

Funeral Services for Beth Ann Parrott Rogers, age 58, will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Texas with burial following at Walker’s Chapel Cemetery in Reklaw, Texas.

She was born on March 11, 1948 to William and Mavis Parrott of Reklaw, Texas and passed away on January 8, 2007 after a long illness.

Survivors include her husband, Calvin Douglas (Doug) Rogers of Austin, Daughter, Honey Elizabeth Graham and  Granddaughter Makayla Jade Burkett of Longview, mother, Mavis Parrott of Reklaw, Brother, William Robert (Bob) Parrott of Reklaw, nephew, Chad Parrott of Irving, niece, Alison Dotson of Rusk, Step-daughters Angela Kemp and Rashel Hamilton, four step-granddaughters; Abigail Kemp, Katelyn Kemp, Madeline Hamilton, and Caroline Hamilton all of Lewisville and many friends.

Beth Ann graduated from Rusk High School and continued her education at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches in 1970. She earned her Masters in Library Science from Le Tourneau University and began her teaching career in Jacksonville as a Kindergarten teacher and principal. She also taught special education, physical education and was a high school librarian at Hallsville, Texas for 18 years. In 1997, Beth Ann moved to Austin where she worked as the Librarian of William B. Travis High School before completing her teaching career as the Ninth Grade Center Librarian at Westlake High School in Eanes ISD.

Beth Ann had several honors in her career including an appointment to the Texas Skill Standards Board by then Governor and now President George W. Bush. She served on the ATPE Board of Directors in the mid 1980’s as well as most regional and local offices in the early years of ATPE. In 1993, she was elected President of the Association of Texas Professional Educators after serving as the State Secretary and State Vice-President. She also served on a variety of committees both at the local school district level and at the state ATPE level. She is also a member of the Wall of Honor in ATPE as a Past State President.

Alan Bookman said, “Some people live their life and leave little or no imprint. Others leave a forever footprint, and everlasting impact of love, of smiles, of support and of friendship.” Beth Ann Rogers was such a person. Her favorite quote was “Have I told you how much I love you lately” and secondly, “BELIEVE”. Most of the people that truly knew Beth Ann could not help but love her and those that did not know her soon grew to love her. She will be greatly missed.

Pallbearers will be Chad Parrott, Ken Dotson, Archie, McAfee, Alan Bookman, Jerry Russell and Steve Graham.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Al Clark, Mike McLamore, Jack Riley, Ike Frazer, Harry Webster and John Jackson.

The family will receive friends Friday, January 12, 2007 from 6 to 8 PM at Autry Funeral Home.

Herman l. Glass 9/16/1916 -1/6/2007

Herman L. Glass, Owner of Jacksonville’s Glass Oil Company, and former Jacksonville Postmaster, passed away at his home on Saturday, January 6, 2007.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at 2:00 PM in Autry Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Harold Brunson and Jeff Hancock officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Rusk.

Born September 19, 1916 in Dialville, Mr. Glass graduated from high school in 1934. After college he taught school and served as principal in Afton Grove before becoming a highway patrolman in 1941. He entered the United States Army in 1942. Just before he left for combat in the European Theater, he married Berniece Pryor of Rusk on December 17, 1942. In the service, Glass became a Battalion Motor Officer with the 117th infantry, landing in Normandy on D-Day plus 6. During his three and a half years in the Army, he was awarded five Battle Stars, a Bronze Star and a Cluster.

After his military service, Glass rejoined the Highway Patrol in Beaumont and later returned to Jacksonville, where he became a Texaco service-station operator and Firestone-tire salesman, along with brothers Moody and Orland Glass. Then, in 1968, he was called into public service when, at the recommendation of local civic leaders Emerson Stone, Sr., and Barney Broiles and Senators John Tower and Ralph Yarbrough, President Lyndon Johnson appointed him Postmaster of Jacksonville. Mr. Glass served as Postmaster from 1968 until his retirement in 2004.

In addition to his commitment to the United States Post Office, Glass continued his affiliation with Texaco, operating service stations and a petroleum-products distributorship, Glass Oil Company, which he continued to run until his death.

Mr. Glass was a long-time member of First Baptist Church and participated in the Rotary Club. He was also a Mason.

Mr. Glass was preceded in death by siblings Elmo Glass, W.W. (Webster) Glass, Everett Glass, Hassie Gresham, Moody Glass, Dan Glass, Hubert Glass, Orland Glass, Becky Mayfield and J.M. Glass.

Survivors include wife Berniece, son Jerry Glass and wife Vicki of Ft. Worth, daughter Judy Moore and husband Byron of Tyler, daughter Terri Fletcher and husband Royce of Jacksonville, daughter Jill Starling and husband Edward of Rusk, grandchildren Amanda Glass-D’Oro, Jason Glass, Byron Brandon Moore, Nicole Fletcher, and Austin Moore and surviving siblings Ernest Glass and wife Alice, Beulah Creekmur and husband Cruz, Paul Glass and wife Margaret, Jimmy Glass and wife Frances and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jason Glass, Byron Brandon Moore, Austin Moore, Brent Glass, Paul Glass, Butch Bateman, Ricardo D’Oro and Cody Smith.

Visitation will begin on Tuesday, January 9, with family receiving friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Sue Gore 11/9/1924 -1/6/2007

Funeral services are scheduled for Sue Gore, 82 of Jacksonville for Tuesday, January 8, 2007 at 10 AM at Autry Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tony Cleaver & Rev. James Blaylock officiating.  Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Donald Box 5/13/1915 -1/5/2007

Donald Lyndon Box, 91, life-long fire fighter, Christian servant, and raconteur, died Friday, January 5, in Rusk, Texas. Before he retired in 1980 after 33 years with the Fort Worth Fire Department, school children throughout the city knew him as “Fireman Box” for his lively safety demonstrations.

Baptized in a country creek by Foy E. Wallace at the age of 10, he served as a deacon in every church he attended before he moved to Rusk in 1989. He was as an elder of the Rusk Church of Christ for over a decade.

Born in Dublin, TX, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp as a fire fighter in 1933. He volunteered in the Denton Fire Department while attending North Texas State Teachers College 1935-39. He became fire chief at North American Aviation in 1941. During World War II, he served as a fire fighter in the U. S. Army Air Force at Love Field, then in the U. S. Army at Fort Hood until the war ended.

He served in the Fort Worth Fire Department 17 years before becoming fire safety officer. His photo often appeared in the Fort Worth Star Telegram with his faithful Dalmatian dog Cinderella Sparky, who helped with his demonstrations.

After retiring in 1980, he and his wife Mattie opened Romance Antiques near Romance, AR. They sold the store in 1989 and traveled in eight states, conducting antique shows while operating booths in antique malls in Little Rock, Palestine, and Rusk.

Known for his large family, Mr. Box was a strong family man and loved to brag about his eight children and tell stories about his ancestors’ escapades in moving through the southern states to settle in Texas.

Mr. Box made friends instantly, from the grocery store clerk or gas station attendant to neighbors and church visitors. He was active in church, teaching Bible classes, visiting the sick, and sharing his faith until prevented in the last two years due to failing health.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mattie Box of Rusk; eight children, Ramona Gililland, Smithville; Don Box, Hurst; Marquita Moss, Austin; Melany Shook, Arlington; Tahna Cody, Douglass, Jon Box, Chantilly, VA; Camille Moore, Australia; and Gayle “Dorene” Garza, Ringgold, GA; 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; a sister Gene Maikell, Austin; brothers Madison Box, Midland, and Johnny Box, Fort Worth.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rusk Church of Christ.

Esther Genevieve Templeton 10/23/1913 -1/4/2007

Genevieve Laird Templeton, was born on October 23, 1916 in Texarkana, TX. She departed this life on Thursday January 4, 2007.  She was a graduate of Texarkana High School, and Texarkana Business School.  As a long time resident of Jacksonville,  TX, Genevieve loved to crochet, research her genealogy, and was a member in The Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the secretary for First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville from 1936 to 1945, and was a charter member of Women’s Society of Christian Service.  She and her husband helped to organize St. John’s Methodist Church where she was a pianist.   

  She is preceded in death by her husband, John Allen Templeton, her daughter, Emily Anderson, and her brother, Creighton Laird.   She leaves to mourn two beloved grandsons, Stewart Beasley Anderson of Garland, TX and Nathan Templeton Anderson of Dallas, TX along with a host of relatives and friends.  

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, January 7 at the Jacksonville City Cemetery at 2 pm.

John Gartman 11/27/1992 -1/3/2007

Funeral services for John Gartman are set for 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in New Summerfield with Rev. Donnie Sadler officiating.  Burial will follow in McDonald Cemetery in New Summerfield.  Visitation will begin on Friday, January 5, with family receiving friends from 6 PM to 8 PM at the funeral home.

He was a student at New Summerfield.  Was very active in church, and had been on a mission trip to Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Pamela Rose Gartman; grandfathers, Tedd Dragg, Milford Gartman and Frank Shulla.

Survivors include his father, James Wesley Gartman; brothers, David Gartman & Kyle Gartman; sisters, Jacquelyn Rose Gartman, Jamie Gartman, and Christina Gartman; grandparents, Annie Gartman, William Olmstead, & Christina Shulla; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Joe Gartman, Freddie Gartman, Richard Pilgriam, James Shipp, Terry Metcalf, Little Joe Gartman, and Brandon Gartman.
 

Robert Loughmiller 01/06/2006 -1/3/2007

Funeral services for Robert Loughmiller are set for 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 6th, at the First Baptist Church in New Summerfield with Rev. Donnie Sadler.  Burial will follow at McDonald Cemetery.  Visitation will begin on Friday, January 5, with family receiving friends from 6 PM to 8 PM.

Mr. Loughmiller was a Junior at New Summerfield High School, a member of the staff for school paper, school choir, was associated with youth ministries at New Summerfield High School.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church in New Summerfield.

He is survived by his parents, Pete & Cindy Loughmiller, brothers, Leonard & Michael Loughmiller; step-sister, Paula Milirons; grandmother, Jeanette Loughmiller; aunts & uncles, Lee Roy & Kerri Loughmiller, Lynn Loughmiller, Cyndi Clements, Kay & Gary Zellers.

Frances Arnwine Buckner 11/23/1906 -1/1/2007

Sallie Frances Arnwine Buckner was born November 23, 1906 in Maydelle, Texas, the daughter of J.A. Arnwine and Martha Ann Tabitha Watson Arnwine, and died January 1, 2007 in Tyler, Texas. She was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin College and was a member of Central Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Texas.

Mrs. Buckner was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, former Jacksonville Mayor R.C. Buckner; and by her sister Nan Arnwine and brothers W.D. Arnwine, D.L. Arnwine and Houston Arnwine.

She is survived by her daughter Bobye Buckner Adamson of Tyler; by her daughter Bilye Buckner Werner and her husband Joseph G. Werner of Dallas; by granddaughter Angela Adamson Hanson and her husband Ronald Hansen of North Mankato, Minnesota; by granddaughter Susan Werner Stratton and her husband Derek D. Stratton of Dallas; by her grandsons Marc Crouch, Tommy Woods, Jacob Woods and Joseph Stratton; by her sisters Jimye Pipes of Rusk and Ona Jenkins of Jacksonville; and by several nieces and nephews. The family expresses their gratitude to special friends Linda Bailey, Linda Barton Brunson, Mary Finley Rayon, Mary Spradlin and Loretta Taylor.
