Ruby Temple Cariker of Jacksonville, age 103, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2007, ending a joyful, industrious and devout Christian life. She loved and cared about people—and had a special affinity for children. Mrs. Cariker was born in Earle’s Chapel on October, 2, 1903, to Robert F. and Leavie Temple. She lived in Palestine with her paternal grandmother, Virginia Carnell Temple, before beginning school in Reese. There, her parents raised her with her late brothers—Jim Temple of Carrollton; Bart Temple of Beaumont; Howard Temple of Jacksonville; and Woodrow Tempe of Dallas—and her late sister, Mildred Etheridge of Reese. On December 4, 1920, Ruby Temple married J.R. Cariker. The lived in several Texas towns for brief periods while he drilled oil and gas wells, but would always return to Jacksonville. They owned a grocery store on West Commerce St. during the Depression. Mrs. Cariker devoted herself to raising their daughters , Wanda and Jean. Her greatest pleasures were cooking and caring for her family. Once her daughters had left home, she began working at Marja Manufacturing Co. as a seamstress in 1948 and continued until her retirement in 1965. In 1953, the Carikers bought a farm on the Corinth Road, where they raised livestock and delighted in entertaining their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She taught Bible classes at the Corinth Road Church of Christ in Jacksonville and was credited by several students for bringing them to faith. She was a member of the Bullard Church of Christ at the time of her passing. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at Resthaven Memorial Park. A visitation with the family will follow the service at the family residence. Arrangements are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home.
