Bruton-Burns
The earliest records found of the Bruton ancestry begin with David
Bruton(1) being born in 1740 in Anson Co., N. Carolina. His first wife's
name is unknown at this time and he had his first child, George, from this
marriage. He then married Susannah, last name unknown, and had the following
children, Jonas, Enoch, David, Isaac, Phillip, and Hannah. All the children
were born in Spartanburg Co., S. Carolina.
The third son, Enock (2), born 15 Dec 1766 married Dorcus Woffard, born
9 Dec 1766. Enoch's first born son, Benjamin (3), was born 20 Jun 1788 and
he married Gemima, last name unknown. Benjamin and Gemima moved to Tennessee
and then on to Illinois. In 1834 Benjamin and his family, a younger brother,
Elisha, and his aunt, Thurza Cole Bruton, widow of his uncle, Isaac, moved to
Red River Co., Tx. By 1836, Benjamin and his family were among the first
settlers to settle in Van Zandt Co., TX. Benjamin's fourth son, Enoch R. M.
(4), born 1829 was married in Bell Co. Tx 10 Nov 1853 to Tempa Ann Paulk, born
1836. In the 1870 Bell Co. census Tempa Bruton is shown as the head of
household with their five children, so we assume that Enoch is deceased at
this time. Their five children were; William W., born 1854, married first
Nancy McClendon, second Mrs. Viola Moore; Martha, born 1855, background
unknown; Jessie Rubin, born 1858, married Martha D. Rhodes; Josiah, born
1860, background unknown; and Albert Jefferson, born 29 Oct 1862.
Albert J. Bruton (5) married Mary Susie Burns, born 12 Jul 1867, on 4 May
1884 in Bell Co., TX. At this time what is known about Mary Susie's family is
that her father was known as " Preacher Burns" in Coryell Co. She had one
brother, John, and two sisters, Annie married to a Mr. Hackney, and Lillie.
Albert and Susie bought land in Coryell Co. near Gatesville in 1897 and
had a big peach orchard. From this marriage they had eleven children, nine
making it to adulthood; Emmett, born 1887 married Allie Parker; Charles
Clinton, born 1889 married first Tyrie, then Carmen E. White; Smith and Mary
were stillborn; Jasper Jefferson, born 1893 married Hattie Sue Hawkins; Emma
Paralee, born 1895 married Ralph Duncan Hamilton; Lou Ella (6), born 1897
married Ernest Lee Lynch; David Albert, born 1899 married Lima Dean Burns;
Alta Sue, born 1902 married Marvin Leroy Tippit; Roy, born 1904 married
Mamie Clawson; Troy Author, born 1907 married Martha Mae Anderson. Albert
and Susie raised their nine children in Coryell Co and they attended Hubbard
school. As the children grew in to adulthood they moved in different
directions starting their own families. Many of the Bruton's and their
descendants are buried in Restland, Flint Creek, and Mound cemeteries.
Today there are many descendants of the original Coryell Co. Bruton's
living in Gatesville, the surrounding areas and throughout Texas. I want to
thank Ronnie Bruton, a second cousin, for his contribution to the family
history of the Bruton's.
