Henry Mattison Smith was born 16 Mar 1854 in Henderson, Rusk County, Texas to Henry
Madison and Sarah Susannah Hall Smith.
He married his cousin [double cousin-because their fathers were brothers and their mothers
were sisters], Delilah [Dillie] Jo Smith 24 Jan 1875 in Coryell County, Texas. The marriage
was performed by Elder John McClain.
Delilah Jo Smith was born 26 Jul 1857 in Henderson, Rusk County, Texas to Joseph P.
and Minerva Ann Hall Smith. Her father died about 1860. Her mother eventually moved to
Coryell County and married a widower named Ezekiel Huckabee of Pontontoc County, MS.
About 4 years before that, Henry Madison Smith Sr. became the guardian of the property of
Dillie Jo Smith. Two years after that, Dillie Jo and H.M. Smith Jr. married.
Because Dillie Jo Smith's mother married Ezekiel Huckabee, the suceeding generations
thought that Dillie Jo's name was Dillie Jo Huckabee, but the marriage license shows her as
Miss Dellie Smith. They moved to Comanche County, Texas, then to Cedar Hill, San Juan County,
New Mexico. Several of their 15 children died young. Some of their children were buried in
Post Oak cemetery, along with their grandfather Henry Madison Smith and some in the Sipe
Springs, Texas Cemetery.
They both died in the hospital in Durango, Colorado, but they lived in New Mexico.
Henry Mattison Smith died 17 Sep 1925 and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, San Juan County,
New Mexico. Dillie Jo Smith died 24 May 1927 and was buried in Cedar Hill, New Mexico.
