Aten, Annie Beatrice 
In Memory of Annie B. Aten, born April 12, 1910 in Alto, Cherokee County, Texas, died Nov. 1, 1999 in Lovington, New Mexico.  Services at 2 pm Saturday, Nov. 4, 1995 at Hillcrest Baptist Church.  Rev. K.M. McCarthick officiating.  Burial at Prairie Haven Cemetery in Hobbs, New Mexico.  Casketbearers are Tommy Cummingham, Tal Cummingham, Sherman Aten, Charlie Aten, Jerry Collis, David Kemp.  (Submitted by Louise Gillispie Stratton, April 2007)

 

Bredding, Walter
The body of Walter Breeding was taken to Cross Plains Friday night, where funeral services were held Saturday, and burial was made in the Cottonwood Cemetery near that place Breeding, who was unmarried, is survived by his father, H.L. Breeding, and three brothers; Leonard Breeding of Lamesa, J.M. Breeding of Lamesa, and Arvie Breeding of Cross Plains; also three sisters, Mrs. F.A. Oglesby of Cross Plains, Mrs. B.B. Brown, Dorman Wade
Funeral services for Dorman Wade Brown, 74, of Jefferson were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 1 at Haggard-Heaster Chapel.  Visitation was held Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Burial was in Oakwood Memorial Park under direction of Haggard-Heaster Funeral Home.  Mr. Brown was born May 1, 1927 in Lamesa, the son of Ernest Elbert Brown and Edna Hailey.  He died June 28, 2001 in Texarkana.  He had lived in Jefferson since 1982, coming from Grand Prairie.  He was a veteran and a member of the Methodist church.  Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Jefferson; sons Lynn Brown of Jefferson, Darrell Warrick of Pittsburg and Rany Dale Brown of Lovebady; stepsons John Paul Nuckols of Murfreesboro, Ark., and Jim Nuckols of Glenwood, Ark.; daughters Lois Deann Brown Orosco of Freeport, Me. and Sonjia Salazar of Odessa; a brother Alton Brown of Seminole; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  (Submitted by Louise G. Brown, Edna Pearl
Services for a former Hobbs Woman, Edna Pearl Brown, 79, of Good Samaritan Village, Lovington, are slated for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Baptist Chruch.  The Rev. Jack Stringer will officate the services and burial will follow in Prairie Haven Cemetery.  Born July 20, 1905 in Nacogdoches, Texas, Mrs. Brown died Wednesday ( Dec. 19, 1984) at the Good Samaritan Village in Lovington.  Survivors include two sons, Alton Brown of Hobbs, and Dorman Brown of Jefferson, Texas; two sisters, Lucille Larsen of Denver and Beatrice Aten of Lovington; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.  Griffin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  (Submitted by Louise G. Busby, Emmett
The final chapter in Dawson County's tragic accident of last Friday, was ended Monday afternoon when the remains of Emmett Busby was laid to rest in the Lamesa Cemetery beneath a bank of beautiful floral offerings which attested to the high esteem in which he was held by his many friends in Lamesa.  Funeral services were held in the First Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. M.M. Beavers in charge of the services, assisted by Rev. E.F. Cole, a male quartette composed of Owen Taylor, Essie More, A.J. McDaniel and Tom Barron sang "Rock of Ages."  Members of the local post of the American Legion escorted the cortege to the cemetery where he was buried with military honors.  Willie Emmett Busby was born in Atlanta, GA in 1893.  He had been a resident of Lamesa for serveral years.  In 1927 he married a Lamesa girl, Miss Nell Barrington, who survives him.  He had been a member of the Methodist church since youth.  He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges and of the American Legion.  Besides his widow, Mrs. Nell Busby, the deceased leaves five brothers to mourn his untimely death.  They are L.L. Cluck, Norman
World War II Army Air Corps Served in the United States  as a gunner and flight engineer in the European Theater. Preceded in death by his parents, M. E. and Callie Mae Dyer; and two sisters, Beatrice Horne and Katie Brown. Extracted from obituary provided by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Burial in Old Acklery Cemetery.

Corley, Leonard 
Leonard Corley, 40, of 3708 Tarrant Rd., who died Thursday in a hospital, will be buried in Ringgold, La., after funeral services there.  Corley was a native of Ringgold and had lived here for 16 years.  He owned the Dairy Queen at 2800 Vaughn Blvd.  He was a Baptist.  Survivors include his wife (Vera Francisco Corley); parents, Mr. and Mrs. Polk P. Corley of Ringgold, and two sisters, Mmes. Lavon Pate of Quincey, La, and Jennie Sprawls of Ringgold  (Submitted by Louise G. Crow, Andrew B.
Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Lamesa, Texas last Sunday, August 5, for Mr. Andrew B. Crow of Lovington.  Following the Lamesa services, the body was laid to rest in the Lamesa Cemetery beside the grave of his wife who passed away only a few months ago.  Death came to Mr. Crow Thursday night August 2, 1951 as he was driving from  towards Lovington.  The accident happend about 7 miles east of Seagraves.  Mr. Crow came to Lovington to manage the first cotton gin with the planting of cotton in Lea County in 1947.  He was manager of the Western Cotton Co. gin at Lovington at the time of his death.  According to information received at the Leader officer, Mr. Crow was driving west on Texas State Road 28, and was driving a 1949 model Chevrolet.  He ran into a large semi-trailer Ford truck owned by the H&D Construction Co. of Hobbs.  The truck had engine trouble and had pulled off the side of the road, and was properly parked, with parking flares.  The truck was driven by Melvin Burkley and a swamper.  They were working on the truck engine when Mr. Crow ran squarely in the back of the truck.  Marks on the highway showed he had swerved back and forth some 75 or 100 feet before the crash, straddling one of the truck flares.  Burkley said Crow tried to talk but couldn't and died a few minutes after the crash.  He suffered a broken neck.  Survivors included three sons, Tommy Crow of Lovington, A.B. Crow, Mrs. Cara Freeman
Funeral services were held in Lamesa Sunday, January 28, for Mrs. Cara Freeman Crow at the First Methodist Church.  She passed away at the Lamesa General Hospital after an illness of 21 days.  She was 65 years old at the time of her death.  The date of her birth was August 14, 1885 and she died January 26, 1951.  She is survived by her husband A.B. Crow of Lovington, manager of the H. & H. Gin; and four children, A.D. Crow of Lamesa, Mrs. R.R. Davies of San Bernadino, California, Edgar T. Crow now serving with the Army in Korea, and Thomas L. Crow of Lovington.  Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. A.B. Cummings of Moshiem, Texas and two brothers, Bero Jones of Gatesville, Texas and L.V. Crowley, Charles D.
Charles D. Crowley, 84 died at his home in Lovington Sunday evening, December 23, 1945.  Mr. Crowley had been ill ten days.  He came to this community in 1931 from Lamesa, Texas.  Prior to his retirement he had served as ranch foreman, Texas peace officer, and sheriff for many years.  Mr. Crowley is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.  Preliminary funeral services were held at the Yarbro Funeral Home here, and the body taken to Lamesa, Texas for final services and interment.  The deceased was a charter member of the Lamesa Methodist church.  The Rev. Duke, Rev. William E.
Services are pending here for the Rev. William E. Duke, 89, a retired Baptist minister and former Hobbs resident.  Branon Funeral Home is handling arrangements.  Duke died at 1 p.m. Friday in Denver City convalescent home after a lengthy illness.  A native of Bowie County, Texas, Duke began his ministry in Crosby and Dickens counties and moved to Lamesa in 1924 to preach for high plains area churches for 11 years.  He moved to Denver City from Hobbs, where he was employed in 1953 at The Hobbs New-Sun.  Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Florence Duke; a daughter, Mrs. Alfred Redwine of Seagraves; three sons, Elmo Duke and Tommie Duke, both of Amarillo; and Kenneth Duke of Dumas, Texas; a step-son, Marvin E. Bayles of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Eva Taylor of Tempe, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Nannie Carlton of Tulsa; a brother H.A. of Lamesa; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.   (Lovington Leader, Mar. 7, 1976) Submitted by David Minton, Nov. 2006

Gillespie, James
Alpine, Tex., Jan. 15.--James Gillespie, sheriff of Brewster county and for a long time captain of the state rangers, died here last night and was buried to-day at 4 o'clock. The deceased was a very popular man, and the largest concourse of people ever seen at a funeral here attended his burial.  (Dallas Morning News, January 16 1890, Location: Dallas, TX, Page/Column: 1/6)

Gillispie, Dock 
In Memory of Dock Gillispie born Feb. 16, 1909 and died May 28, 1988.  Memorial services at 10 am, Wednesday, June 1st at First Southern Baptist Church of Elfrida.  Officiating Rev. John Grimes. (Dock fell off his roof and was killed. He wasn't found for about 30 hours. He had put an extension ladder up to the side of the house wrong and when he finished hooking up the water to his Evap.cooler and stepped on the ladder it went over and landed on top of him on the ground. His old dog sat by him the whole time. A farmer named Mr Miller drove past Dad's place 4 times a day for 21/2 days and saw the old dog in the same place each time. He finally thought that he ought to stop and check on Dad. He had last seen Dad on the roof with the kitchen door wide open and it was open all the times he had driven past. He found Dad laying on the ground with the old dog sitting beside him. He called the Elfrida sheriff and told him to send the coroner.) (Submitted by Louise G. Gillispie, Ralph "Slim"
A Tribute to Ralph "Slim" Gillispie Jan. 29, 1913 - Mar. 20, 1984.   When Slim Gillispie came to Cheyenne in 1967, he brought with him a wife, a son, and strong desire to establish lasting friendships and "roots". Slim started working in the oil fields of West Texas when only seventeen years of age and had acquired a masters degree in the school of hard knocks having lived for short periods of time all over the U.S. In 1969, after living in Cheyenne only two years, Slim became a business partner with his young son, Ric, in Gillispie and Son Drilling Co. Working hard came naturally to this man born on January 29, 1913, but another natural abilities (and one many adults never achieve) was "playing". Slim had a deep love for young people and became involved and active with them in sports, school and just every day life. This love was deeply felt by all of those who came to know Slim and Shirley Gillispie. In 1980, Slim semi retired due to failing health, still received his biggest pleasure in life by making sure those around him were happy. We will miss that big tall man, who could make you so mad if the twinkle in his eyes would not have been so bright. Slim is survived by wife, Shirley, and three sons. Gillispie, Ruby Lee Whitlow
Graveside services for Ruby Lee Gillispie, 87, of Andrews will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Lamesa Memorial Park with the Rev. Darryl Dunks, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.  She was born Jan. 25, 1900 in Limestone County, Texas and died Jan. 23, 1988 in Andrews, Texas. Burial will be under direction of Branon Funeral Home.  She died at 9 a.m. Saturday at her home.  Justice of the Peace Bill Orson ruled natural causes in the death.  Mrs. Gillispie was born in Limestone county and moved from Winters to Lamesa in 1923.  She married Thomas M. Gillispie in 1925 in Lamesa.  he died in 1973.  She was a longtime member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.  Survivors include a daughter, Maxine Sanders of Roswell, NM; a son Jackie of Andrews; a brother Joe B. Gillispie, Shirley
Shirley Gillispie was born April 25, 1926 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Grace Mary and Gailey W. Jones and passed away December 10, 1993 at her residence at the age of 67 years, 7 months and 15 days. Shirley married Ralph Gilliepie on November 22, 1954 in Tatum New Mexico and they moved to Cheyenne, Oklahoma to make their home. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by four sons, Richard W. Gillispie, Seymour, Texas; Hugh W. Gillisie, Cypress, Texas, John Neely, Beaverton, Oregon; Butch Neely, Portland, Oregon; one daughter, Judy Spargo, Grants Pass, Oregon; and two granddaughters, Machaela Gillispie, Edmond, Oklahoma and Jade Gillispie, Abilene, Texas. Private graveside services will be held in the Fairview Memorial Park of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Local arrangements were under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service of Cheyenne. Hailey, Tom 
Funeral services for Tom Hailey, victom of the caliche pit disaster, were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the First Baptist Church of Lamesa, Rev. E.F. Cole, pastor, conducted the services.  Burial was in the Lamesa Cemetery.  Mr. Hailey had been a member of the Baptist Church for 24 years.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ora Hailey; and three daughters, Mrs. Dock Gillispie and Mrs. Elbert Brown of Lamesa, and Mrs. Rufus Aten of Kermit, Texas. Herndon, Buster
Buster Herndon, 87, of Lamesa will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lamesa Church of Christ with Sonny Hollis of Westbrook officiating. Jack Prather of Lamesa will assist.  Burial will be in Lamesa Memorial Park under direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Herndon died Friday, Oct. 18, 1996, at Methodist Hospital.  He was born April 13, 1909, in Anson. He married Lucille Callaway on Oct. 12, 1946, in Lamesa. He graduated from Lamesa High School.  He was the Dawson County tax assessor/collector from 1937 to 1947, and he was the city of Lamesa tax assessor/collector from 1963 to 1978. He served as the Dawson County judge from 1948 to 1952. A daughter, Y'Vonne Hollis, died in 1948.  Survivors include his wife; a son, Sonny Hollis of Westbrook; three sisters, Oleta Carpenter of Mission, DeOla Cutler of Mayhill, N.M., and Fred Ella Shofner of Lamesa; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Hughes, Jr., Homer A.
Homer A. Hughes, Jr., 17 years old high school student, was killed at 7 o'clock Sunday night when an automobile in which he was riding overturned about two miles south of Buckeye on State Highway No. 8.  The body was taken to Lamesa by Griffin Funeral Service of Hobbs.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer A. Hughes reside there.  The death car was driven by Bobbie Blackwood of Lovington who received serious head injuries.  He was rushed to the Lea County Hospital where he is reported to be "holding his own."  Others riding in the car were Bill Benham, 17; Grady Hughes, 16; Johnny Rogers, 17; all Lovington high school students.  They were uninjured.  The cause of the accident, according to reports by state police, were "Car overturned when driver lost control on rough roads while driving too fast."  The car is reported to have turned over two and a half times, stopping 78 feet from the highway.  It traveled almost 450 feet from the time it went out of control until it stopped.  The car is a total loss.  A coronary jury called Sunday night returned a verdict of death by reason of automobile accident.  Justice of Peace Bob Bensing of Hobbs presided as coroner.  Members of the jury were Cecil Coker, L. Hughes , Jr. Homer A.
Homer A. Hughes, Jr. a 17 year-old Lovington HIgh School student was killed last Sunday evening when an automobile in which he was riding overturned about two miles south of Buckeye.  Driver of the car was Bobby Ray Blackwood who received head injuries.  Three other Lovington youths were riding in the car at the time of the mishap.  They are Bill Benham, Grady Hughes and Johnny Rogers.  It has been reported that the automobile left the highway and traveled better than 250 feet in a narrow ditch, then ran across the highway and overturned two and half times and came to rest about eighty feet from the highway.  The car was totally demolished.  The driver of the car, Bobby Joe Blackwood, recieved head injuries and for several days was in critical condition, but on Wednesday of this week his condition was reported to be imporved.  The death of the Lovington youth in the accident was the fifth traffic fatality in Lea County this year.  (Lovington Press, Jan. 31, 1952)  Submitted by David Minton, Feb. 2008

Humphreys, Elizabeth M.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth M. Humphreys, born December 7, 1871, died October 20, 1947 will be conducted at the First Baptist Church, Wednesday afternoon, October 26, 1947 at 4 o'clock.  Dr. Clarence A. Jeter, Harold Allen
Harold Allen Jeter, 52, of 622 S. Fifth St. died in Lovington Lea General Hospital following an extended illness.  He had been a resident of Lovington for the past five years and prior to his illness was a heavy equipment operator engaged in pipe line construction.  Mr. Jeter was born on September 19, 1920 in Lamesa, Texas.  He was a member of the Baptist Church of Bloomfield, N.M. and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Lovington.  He is survived by his wife, Emmie of the home, four sons; Kenneth L., Gig Harbor, Wash., Larry A., of Lovington, Ralph D., Denham Springs, La., and Dennis Kelch of Lovington.  Three daughters, Mrs. Jerry Shields, Wharton, Texas, Mrs. Michael Gomez, Las Cruces, N. Mex., and Miss Kathy Kelch of Lovington.  One brother, Albert Jeter of Farmington, N.M., and two sisters, Mrs. Haskill Worley, Lamar, Colo., and Mrs. Frank Wilcos, Kenna, N.M..  Also by four grandchildren.  Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the Smith-Rogers Chapel with Rev. Wayne Williams, Baptist Minister of Lubbock and Rev. Key, Lena Melinda 
Funeral services for Lena Melinda Key, 100 years of age, a long-time North Lea County resident, died early this morning at the Lovington Good Samaritan Center.  She had been a resident of the Center since October of 1970.  Mrs. Key was born October 8, 1881 in Burnet County, Texas.  She was united in marriage to James Henry Key on June 19, 1901 at Big Spring.   Mrs. Key was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tatum.  Mrs. Key is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Violet Kinnison of Lamesa, Texas and Mrs.  Mary Lee Frier of Tatum; three sons, J. Travis Key of Mineral Wells, Texas, D. Wayne Key of Eunice, and Dr. Jack H. Key of Uvalde, Texas, and also a sister, Mrs. Essie Hughes of Burleson, Texas. Mrs. Key is survived by 14 grand children, 37 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.  Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 10 in the First Baptist Church in Tatum.  Rev. Wayne O. Perry, Baptist Minister of Lubbock and Rev. Gene North, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Tatum will officiate at the services.  Burial will be beside her late husband John H. Lopez, Sipriano "C.P."  
Funeral services for Sipriano "C.P." Lopez, 79 will be Thursday, Oct. 12 at St. Thomas Catholic Church at 10 a.m.  The deceased, a resident of Lovington, was born April 27, 1927 in York Town, Texas.  He died Saturday, October 7.  A rosary will be conducted at Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home Wednesday, October 11 at 7 p.m., and a mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamesa, Texas on Thursday, October 12 at 3 pm.  Father Manuel Ibarra is officiating.  Burial will follow at Lamesa Memorial ParkSipriano and Rufina Lopez were married in April 1948 in Lamesa, Texas.  He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Ninfa and her husband Jesse Navarette and Maria Rodriguex of Lovington; a brother, Manuel Lopez of Lamesa; two sisters, Conny Esparza and Irene Baron of Lamesa; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Maria Lopez; three sisters, Antonia Gonzales, Margarita Chapa, Victoria Cuellar Lopez, Paublina Cuellar, and Dominga Cuellar; three brothers, Pablo Cuellar, Jose Angel Cuellar, and Marcelino Cuellar.  Family visitation hours will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 8 p.m. to rosary on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Kirby-Smith-Rogers is directing funeral services.  Lovington Leader, Oct. 10, 2006) Submitted by David Minton, Nov. 2006

Marley, William Loyd
Funeral services are pending for William Loyd Marley, age 54, who died unexpectedly Thursday,  A resident of the McDonald community since 1959, Marley suffered a heart attack at his home about noon and was dead on arrival at the hospital.  A veteran of World War II, he was born August 1, 1919 in Marlow, Okla.  Survivors include: his wife, Silverene of the home; one son William Loyd II of the home; his mother, Mrs. Lillie Marley of Lamesa, Texas; six brothers, Dan and Roy Marley of Fresno, Calif., Troy Marley of Globe, Ariz., A.R. Matlock, Ida Cornelia 
Mrs. Ida Cornelia Matlock, 85 years of age, a resident of Lovington for the past 2 1/2 years, died at the Lovington Good Samaritan Center Sunday morning.  Mrs. Matlock was born February 10, 1894 in Lipan, Texas.  She was united in marriage to Samuel M. Matlock, November 14, 1909 at Knox City, Texas.  He preceded her in death in 1947.  She had resided in the Lamesa, Texas area since 1924, moving there from Knox City, until she moved to Lovington.  Mrs. Matlock was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Lamesa.  She is survived by three daughters; Mrs. Inez Pieper, Mesquite, Tex.; Mrs. Gladys Darwin, Corpus Christi, Tex.; and Mrs. Marie Pritchell, Amarillo, Tex.; four sons,Joe Matlock, Hoodsport, Wash.; Jack Matlock, Ignacio, Colo.; Doyle Matlock, Lamesa, Tex.; and Bill Matlock, Lovington; one brother, Ab Hodges of Crane, Tex., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Howell of Brownfield, Tex.; also by 24 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.  Funeral services for Mrs. Matlock will be conducted Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in the Jackson Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. McClane, Sydney Murrel
A 15-year-old, Air Base City boy was instantly killed at 11:45 p.m. Friday when the motor scooter he was driving was struck by an automobile driven by a Lovington motorist.  The dead youth was identified as Sydney Murrell McClane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude McClane, Air Base City.  State police identified the driver of the automobile as Ansel Farris of 123 West Central, Lovington.  According to police, young McClane was entering State Road 18 from the Air Base City road and pulled out directly in front of the oncoming Farris vericle.  Measurments made by State Policeman William Woods showed the youth was thrown 66 feet in the air from the point of impact.  The motor scooter was driven 315 feet from the point of impact.  Passengers in the Farris car were identified by police as David Haddock, 622 S. Love and Leslie Goheen, 1214 W. Monroe, both of Lovington.  The youth was a ninth grade student in Hobbs schools.  His family moved to Hobbs from Lamesa, Texas, six years ago.  In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Michael, 11, and Bryan, 9; one sister, Karen, two; and his maternal grandmother Mrs. E.R. Dumbar, of Lamesa, Texas.  Young McClane was taken to Lea General Hospital but was dead on arrival.  The body was released to the Griffin Funeral Home, Hobbs.  Funeral services will be conducted at Air Base City at 2 p.m. Sunday, with The Rev. McCurdy, Melba Ruth
Funeral services for Melba Ruth McCurdy, 29, 1512 W. Polk, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 21 at the First Baptist Church, Rev. E.J. Bradshaw will officiate.   Mrs. McCurdy died Monday of self-inflicted gunshot wounds at Lovington Lea General Hospital.  She is survived by her husband, William N.; two daughters, Cheryl Ann, and Linda Jeannetter, both of the home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.K. Sudie Etta Paige McNew was born June 23, 1929 in Westbrook, Mitchell County, Texas and died Dec. 31, 2002 in Odessa, Ector County, Texas.  She had been a resident of Odessa, Texas since 1958.  She was the daughter of Henry Grady Paige & Grace Wagner.  She was the wife of Jay Hobbs "Jake" McNew, m. Dec 11, 1948 in Lamesa, Texas.  The mother of Vickie Lynn McNew, deceased; Dana Kaye Hukill, deceased; Shirley Diane Wilkerson, deceased; Shelly McGuire. Miller, Charles A.
Memorial services for Charles A. Miller, age 76, of Lamesa, were held on Saturday, at 10 a.m. at the Branch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clifton Igo, pastor emeritus, officiating.  Arrangements were under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Mr. Miller died Thursday, July 27, 2006.  He was a lifelong resident of Dawson County and a member of the Second Baptist Church.  He married Ruby Beatty on Dec. 8, 1947 in Lamesa.  Survivors include his wife Ruby Miller of Lamesa; a son, Gary Miller of Lamesa; a sister, Catherin Hogans of Odessa; a brother, E.G. Miller, Dorothy
Services for Dorothy Miller, 79, of Lamesa were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Teeters officiating.  Burial was in Lamesa Cemetery under direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Miller died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001.  She was born on Oct. 27, 1921 in Lamesa.  She married Speck Miller on Mar. 5, 1941 in Lamesa.  He died on Dec. 5, 1980.  She served as County Judge of Lamesa for 30 years, holding the state record for longest tenure as municipal judge.  She also worked for local attorney Stansell Clement.  She was a life-long resident of Lamesa and was a member of First Baptist Church for 75 years.  Survivors include a son, Robert of Fort Worth; two daughters, Linda McMillan and Lynn O'Brien both of Lamesa; a brother, E.B. Moreno, Mrs. Alfonsa Mojica
Rites will be held in Lamesa, Texas for Mrs. Alfonsa Mojica Moreno who died in Lea General Hospital in Lovington at 2:30 am Monday.  Mrs. Moreno was born June 10 in 1906 in Mexico.  The arrangements will be made by the Brannon Funeral Home in Lamesa.  While living in Lovington, Mrs. Moreno resided at 102 E. Ave. K.  She is survived by her husband Felix Moreno, four sons, Elias Moreno of Lovington, Marcelo Moreno of Lovington, Baltazar Moreno of Lovington, and Pete Moreno of Lovington and eight daughters, Mrs. Ralquel Mendosa of San Marcus, Texas, Mrs. Maria Robles of Lovington, Mrs. Guadalupe Rivera of Slaton, Texas, Mrs. Cecila Barientez of Seminole, Texas, Mrs. Amelia Salazar of Lamesa, Texas, Mrs. Falicita Bustamante of Lovington, Mrs. Josefina Gutierrez of Coahoma, Texas, and Mrs. Refilijio Barrientez of Plains, Texas.  She is also survived by one brother Mariam Mojica of Lamesa, Texas and a sister Tranquinlina Compos of Salinas, California.  Other survivors are 58 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Oaks, Robert Larry
Staff Sergeant Oaks was killed by hostile action in Long Khanh, South Vietnam, was serving with Company M, 75th Rangers, 199th Light Infantry Brigade as an infantry operations and intelligence specialist, operating on a Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol. Recipient of the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Parachute Wings, Bronze Star with "V" Device, Purple Heart, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. His name is located on Panel 16W, Row 59 of the Vietnam Memorial. Son of Opal Mae Smith Oaks and Robert Dee Oaks. Lamesa High School graduate (1967).Buried at Old Acklery Cemetery. Rushing, James Leon
A 34 year old Lovington oil field worker plunged 95 feet to his death Monday in a rig accident near Tatum.  James Leon Rushing, 34, was employed on a Forster Drilling Co. rig 15 miles west and six miles north of Tatum at the time of the fatal mishap.  Fellow workers said that Rushing lost his balance while working in derricks in the rig's Crow's nest, slipped and fell nearly 100 feet to death.  Witnesses said the victim landed on  his back and died instantly.  An inquest was held at the office of Justice of the Peace Virginia Pior in Tatum Monday.  The death was ruled by accidental fall by a coroner's jury.  The body was transported to Smith-Yarbro Funeral Home for arrangements.  Rushing has resided in Lovington for several years.  He is survived by his wife, Annellises Rushing, 1210 W. Jackson Ave.  Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Orbin Rushing, sister, Mrs. Eulene Pierce, both of Hobbs, and a brother, Billy Ray Rushing of Odessa.  Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Smith-Yarbro Chapel with the Rev. J. Sanders, Maxine Gillispie 
Services were scheduled for 11 am, Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Carlsbad, New Mexico for Maxine Sanders, 77, of Roswell, New Mexico, who passed away October 25, 2003 at Laural View Nursing Home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The Rev. Ron Horn of the Presbyterian Chruch in Haines, Alaska officiated.  Maxine was born on March 29, 1926 in Lamesa, Texas to Tom and Ruby Whitlow Gillispie.  They preceded her in death.  On Feb. 20, 1947 Maxine married Eldon Sanders in Carlsbad, New Mexico.  He preceded her in death on June 19the of this year.  She is survived by one son, Tommy Sanders and his wife Syd of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one daughter, Cindy Klein and her husband Joel, of Tatum, New Mexico; her four special grandchildren, Tyson Sanders, Kyle Sanders, Rusty Klein and Lacey Klein; brother, Jackie Gillispie and his wife Marguerite, of Henryetta, Oklahoma.  Maxine lived in Carlsbad, New Mexico from 1947 until 1979.  During this time she owned and operated Cindy's clothing store.  After living in Pikeville, Kentucky and in Esterhazy, Sasketchewan, Canada, Maxine and Elton retired in Roswell, New Mexico where they lived for the past 20 years.  She was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church and the Grace Sunday School Class.  She enjoyed bowling with her team, The Rockers.  Maxine was a vibrant and outgoing person who enjoyed people.  She wa a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed.  Pallbearers were:  Tyson Sanders, Kyle Sanders, Rusty Klein, Larry Lynch, Dale Lynch and Allan Baldridge.  Honorary pallbearers were Robert Collett, Doug Lynch, Maurbrey Riley, Jim Callaway and John Pack.  Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O.  Schmidt, John R.
John R. Schmidt, age 84, of Alvin, Texas and formerly of Plymouth, went to touch the face of God on March 30, 2004, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.  John was born on Aug. 11, 1919, in New Holstein, a son of the late John and Wilma Wandersleben Schmidt. He attended New Holstein and Plymouth grade schools and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1937.  John served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a flying instructor and proudly boasted that no German aircraft got past Oklahoma City. He retired as a Lt. Colonel USAF.  He married Wanda Deaton in December of 1947 and they had 52 years together before her death in December of 1999.  The couple retired to Alpine where they lived for 25 years, then after Wanda’s death, he moved to Alvin to be near his surviving family.  As a boy of 12, John first got his fascination with birds that lasted his entire life. He was a longtime member of the Texas Ornithological Society.  Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Johnson and her husband and Bennetta Schmidt; two granddaughters, Raechel Bartholomew and Laura King; two great-grandsons, Christian and Caleb Bartholomew; one brother, Carl (Dorothy) Schmidt of New Holstein; one sister, Rose Flickinger of Frost Proof, Fla.; and one sister-in-law, Betty Schmidt of Ellicott City, Md. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He also had one sister, Carita Fulwiler, who passed away this past week on April 16, 2004, and was preceded in death by two brothers, John and George Schmidt.  Funeral services were held at the Geeslin Funeral Home Chapel in Alvin, Texas, with Interment at the Elm Grove Cemetery.  The measure of a man is how much he is missed after he is gone, and John will be greatly missed. N.G. Scott was laid to rest Saturday afternoon in the Lamesa Cemetery following funeral services which were held in the Lamesa Church of Christ at 3:15, Minister J.C. Foster conducted the services.  Mr. Scott leaves a widow and three sons to mourn his passing.  Mrs. Anna Belle Scott, Lamesa; Loy Scott of Lovington, NM, Linnie Scott of Lamesa, and Aaron Scott of Big Springs.  Also his parents Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Shackelford, J.B
Former Lamesan died in Austin, J.B. Shackelford, formerly of Lamesa died at 8:00 AM Saturday in Austin,  Shackelford was a resident here from 1916 to 1938.  He is survived by his wife and one son, Earl of Lamesa, four daughters, Mrs. S.C. Richardson of Hale Center, Mrs. Herman Page and Mrs. Boyd Kilgore of California, Mrs. Harry Merriman of Alaska, and two other sons, Melvin of Los Angeles, California, and J.C. of Japan.  Obit. Shelton, John H.
Services for John Henry Shelton, 81, longtime resident of Dawson county, will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Primitive Baptist Church here with Elder Harold Russell officiating.  Burial will be in Lamesa Memorial Park under direction of Higginbotham Funeral Home.  Pallbearers will be J.L. Hester, P.G. Beauchamp, Bryan Jones, Crockett Brown, Carrel Lee, and Luther Brownlow.  Shelton died Friday (Jan. 10, 1964) in Medical Arts Hospital.  A resident farmer, he had lived in Dawson County since 1928.  Survivors include the wife, Lillie; four daughters, Mrs. Claude Miller, Lubbock; Mrs. Ed DuBose, Lamesa; Mrs. S. Simpson, Adrian
Services for Adrian Simpson, 69, of Lamesa were held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Shokley, pastor and Dennis Heard of Olton officiating.  Burial will be in Hancock Cemetery under direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Simpson was dead at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday on arrival at Medical Arts Hospital from an apparent heart attack suffered at his home.  A longtime Dawson County resident, he was a retired farmer.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 909.  He married Josephine Houston Dec. 17,  1950 in Lamesa.  He was a member of the Northside Baptist Church.   Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Elaine Robinson of Midland and Janeice Andrus of Leveland; and one grandchild. Southard, Cora Ann
Mrs. Cora Ann Southard passed away at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, June 12 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Austin Blackmon.  Mrs. Southard was born September 23, 1876 at Boonville, Mississippi.  She was married to J.W. Southard, August 17, 1898.  She is survived by four children, Byron Southard, Lamesa, Texas; Mrs. W.R. Musick, Mayhill; Cpl. J.J. Southard, U.S. Army, El Paso, Texas; and Mrs. Austin Blackmon, Lovington.  Mrs. Southard was proceeded in death by her husband J.W. Stephens, Ollie D.
Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Ollie D. Stephens, 79 years old, Monday in the First Baptist Church.  Rev. J.C. Quarles officiated.  After living in Lovington nine years, Mrs. Ollie D. Stephens died en route to the Lea County hospital early Saturday.  Born in Henderson County, Tennessee, Jan. 8, 1874.  Mrs. Stephens was married to Luther T. Stephens in December 1892 in Wolf City, Texas.  Mr. & Mrs. Stephens made their home in Lamesa for a while then Carlsbad, and after his death Mrs. Stephens moved to Lovington.  Mrs. Stephens is survived by two daughters of Lovington, Mrs. C.A. McDaniels and Mrs. Rome Martin; four sons, Marvin and Truett Stephens of Sulphur, Okla., and J.T. Stephens, Carlsbad; and H.V. Stephens of Pecos, Texas.  Also 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, John Weaver, Hamlin, Texas and a sister Mrs. Minnie Atkisson, Greenfield, Texas.  Pallbearers were C.L. Naull, Edd Plummer, Marion Shields, Floyd Greer, Auston Blackmon, Earl Wilks, Alton Youngblood, and W.S. Stratton, Gregory Kim 
In Memory of Gregroy K. Stratton, passed away June 7, 1963.  Funeral services June 11, 1963 at 2:00 P.M. at The Wayside Chapel of Patterson & O'Connel, San Meteo, California.  Officiating Rev. Stratton, Ralph Merritt
Graveside military services will be held Friday at 1 pm in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, CA. for Ralph Merritt Stratton, 69, who died April 8 (1987) in Veterans Administration Medical Center, Denver, after a lengthy illness.  Mr. Stratton lived in San Mateo from 1955 to 1971, a period in which, as a civil engineer, he was employed at the National Park Service office in San Francisco.  He then moved to the NPS office in Denver, where he received the Department of Interior Meritorious Service Award and , at the time of his retirement in 1979 was chief of the branch of professional consultants.   A native of Garden City, Kanas, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was wounded in Belguim and received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.  Survivors include his wife, Louise of Lakewood, Colo; a daughter; a sister and two grandchildren.  (Submitted by Louise G. Whitley, Allen Dayton
Services for Allen Dayton Whitley, 70, of Lamesa, Texas, will be at 3 pm Tuesday at Northside Baptist Church, Lamesa, Texas, with Rev. Billy Bush officiating.  Burial will be in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Brannon Funeral Home.  Mr. Whitley was dead on arrival at Lea Regional Hospital after a sudden illness.  He was residing with Joe and Clara Parson, 619 West Ave I, Lovington, at the time of his death.  The Lamesa native was a WWII veteran.  He was a retired barber.  Mr. Whitley was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Lamesa.  He was preceded in death by Dezzie Ezell Howard Whitley in 1978.  Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Clara Parson, Lovington, Mrs. Beth Mills, Quanco, Virginia; four sons, J.D. Wimberley, Kate
Graveside services for Kate Wimberley, 95, of Lamesa will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lamesa Memorial Park with the Rev. Wise, Jr., Pollard B.
Pollard B. Wise, Jr. 48 died in Lamesa, Texas, Friday night.  He was the father of Mike Wise of Lovington, station manager for Runco.  The elder Mr. Wise had not been in good health for several years since a serious ginning accident, which had resulted in the loss of a leg.  He died at his home.  Survivors, besides Mike of this city, include two other sons, Pat Wise of Carlsbad and David Wise of Las Cruces.  The funeral will be today (Sunday) at Brannon Funeral Home with burial to follow in Lamesa Memorial Park in Lamesa.   (Lovington Leader, Jan. 1, 1978) Submitted by David Minton, Nov. 2006

Woodul, Dwight
Dwight Woodul, 92, of Lamesa will be at 4 p.m. today at Bryan Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Braswell, pastor, officiating. The Rev. E.R. Holder will assist.  Burial will be at Lamesa Memorial Park under direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Woodul died Friday, Oct. 18, 1996, at Medical Arts Hospital.  He was born May 23, 1904, in Hope, Ark. He married Gladys Franklin on Jan. 10, 1926, in Lamesa. He was a member of Bryan Street Baptist Church.  He was a farmer.   Survivors include his wife; a son, Arvis of Lamesa; a daughter, Joyce Neill of Lamesa; a brother, Parker of Portales, N.M.; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. 

Young, James L.
Funeral services were held in Lamesa Saturday afternoon at 2:30 for James L. Young of the Prairieview Community.  Mr. Young was a farmer in this area and died after an illness of only 10 days.  He was taken first to the Seminole Hospital, then to Lubbock where he expired.  Mr. Young was 30 years old, a veteran of the Second World War and served under Phil Robinson of Lovington who was his captain.  He is survived by his widow and two children four and one and one half years old.  He was a member of the Lovington REA board.  Three members of the board attended the services.  They are R.B.
