McDonald Family
Priscilla Cross Morgan
I am the great great great grandaughter of Joseph McDonald and
Ronda Jane
Nelson. They had a daughter
named Mary Ann Elizabeth McDonald who was
born in Ilinois in 1850. She married a
man by the name of John Strong in 1866.
They had two daughters. Their names were Anne and
Samantha
Strong. All three were living with Joseph and Ronda in 1870 according
to the
Texas Census for Gillespie County. The lived in a little place
called Spring
Creek Settlement. There was a indian massacre
there in 1864. Caroline
McDonald Taylor was kidnapped along with
Alice, James and Dorcas and
were taken by the Kiowa indians to Oklahoma
where the soldiers had to
get them back. It was terrible. Aunt Hannah hid in a cave
during the Massacre
and it is now the park in Harper. Mary Strong then
married my great grandfather
Vicente Cruz who changed his name to Dode Cross.
Mary died in 1872. I don't
know if it was during childbirth or shortly after. It is said
that Vicente took Joseph
Martin Cross their son to Old Mexico. He finally shows up
in the 1880 Texas
Census living in Edwards County with Samantha M Strong and Matthew
M
Taylor, which was his half sister. He lived there until the 1920's
in which he
moved to Junction, and in 1930 to Del Rio in Val Verde
County Texas.
Gillette McDonald Taylor was killed by the
indians in the massacre.
