The Stonewall Heritage Society is an organization of people interested in meeting the needs of our local community and area visitors by preserving our local historic culture and natural environment so that they may be enjoyed now and also by future generations. Our goals are to designate, preserve and maintain selected historic structures, sites and landmarks, including buildings, bridges, cemeteries and schools; to collect, preserve, catalog and exhibit historic furnishings, artifacts and archival materials, including photographs, letters, deeds and wills, that are related to our local history; and to promote an appreciation awareness of and interest in our local history and culture through the means of education and special programs.

The major project of the Society is the relocation of the Heinrich Lindig Homestead from its original site on the north side of the Pedernales River to the new permanent site recently acquired by the society. The new site is on the corner of Ranch Road 1 and Elberta Street, just off U S Highway 290 just east of downtown Stonewall. The Lindig Homestead is a prime example of the typical early Stonewall family farm. The first settler's log cabin was built in 1869. A larger dogtrot style log cabin was built in 1873 with a limestone lean-to expansion added at a later date. There is also a log barn that was probably built about the same time as the first cabin. The larger building has been moved to the new property and is currently being reconstructed. The other two building will be moved at a later date. When the large building is completed, it will serve as the “Headquarters” for the Society. It will be our meeting place and it will have a library and museum open to the public.

Another important project started several years ago involved the documentation of tombstone information in the cemeteries in the area surrounding Stonewall. We currently have ten cemeteries documented and our goal is to find and document the many small family cemeteries in the area. Some of these cemeteries are already on the website and others will be added as time permits.

Membership is open to anyone interested in helping us meet our goals. You do not have to be a former resident of Stonewall nor does it matter where you live. Dues are $5.00 per person per year or $100 per person for a lifetime membership.
