I am searching for my grandfather and great grandfather BELL. Both were called William Green Bell. My family believes Wm, Sr owned a ranch in the county. He died in the 1860's. His widow, Martha, remarried a ______ WALKER. Apparently he then became owner of the property. He died between 1870-80. I would like to find the purchase of the ranch and its location as well as any property transfer after Wm., Sr death. We are not sure how early the family came to Texas. Chris Bell

I am trying to find some information on the above couple. Nancy WILLIS was the sister of my 3rd g-grandmother, Elizabeth "Betsy" Willis. They were daughters of Hannah SETTLE and William WILLIS of Barren Co., KY. John Turner TINSLEY was the son of Elizabeth "Betsy" Turner and Moses Tinsley, and I am VERY distantly related to John Tinsley through his mother. She was a SUDDARTH descendant, and so am I. Nancy Willis and John Tinsley married 21 Jan 1826 in Barren Co., KY. They were on the 1830 and 1840 Allen Co., KY census, and then they apparently moved to Gonzales Co., TX. He was a physician. He died there 5 Mar 1878 and I don't know when she died. I haven't seen it, but she is supposed to be on the 1850 and 1860 Gonzales Co., TX censuses. Their children were: Fountain Gillespie Tinsley, married Sarah Almedia Davis [they were in Bexar Co., TX in 1880]. Mary G. Tinsley, married Jordan W. Sweeney; she died 19 Jul 1852. Virginia Tinsley, married Andrew J. Moore [she died Jan 1865, Gonzales Co., TX]. Amanda Tinsley, married Crockett Jones [they were in Lavaca Co., TX in 1880]. John Willis Tinsley, married Dora Houston [they were in Gonzales Co., TX in 1880]. If anyone has any information on these folks, I'd love to hear from you. I'm trying to locate information on the WILLIS family. -- clarksha@swbell.net

Seeking information on Willis MARTIN, b. Georgia abt 1845, married Susan Jane ROGERS, b. abt 1846, Monroe County, Alabama. Willis and Susan were married in Monroe County, Alabama on June 6, 1862. Willis may have served in the US Civil War with a Texas unit. Believed to have lived in Gonzales County, Texas at least between 1865 and 1874. (Pure speculation) Fourth child was born in Monroe County, Alabama in 1874, and family, at least Susan Jane and children apparantly returned to Texas. This child, Mary Martin married Wiley Jefferson PULLEN in 1882 in Gonzales County, raised a family, and died there in 1950. Any clues? Suggestions?? Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

I am a boxing researcher and have been trying to track down the birthdate and the birthplace of Sam McVEY (or McVEA), a great African-American heavyweight who boxed from 1902 to 1921. His ring record is in many boxing record books. His birthdate is listed on most records as May 17, 1885 and his listed birthplace is Oxnard, California. Since Oxnard wasn't founded until the 1890s, I felt something was wrong. In an edition of a 1902 Oxnard Courier, it was reported that McVey was born in Texas in March 1883. I have since found that Gonzales County was where there were quite a number of McVeas, African-American and white. My mother found a passport application which gave McVey's birthplace as "Welder" , Texas. Although McVey's father is listed as John on his death certificate, it is likely that his father was named Andy or Andrew. There is an Andrew McVea, age 16, who lived in Gonzales County in 1880. An Andrew McVey (or McVea) was found in a ca. 1906 Bakersfield directory where he handled horses for a hotel. There was an Andy McVea who was living in Visalia, California in 1910 and was listed as 42 years old in the U.S. Census. He was born in Texas and was a widower. In the California death records, there is an Andrew (or Andy) McVey (or McVea) who died in his sixties in 1929 in Kern County where Bakersfield is the county seat. In the 1887 Gonzales Inquirer index, there is a Susan McVea (colored) listed. According to the listing, the November 24, 1887. Gonzales Inquirer has her obituary. Sam McVey's death certificate lists a Susan WHITE as his mother. Charles E. Johnston
