David WILLIAMS - Belonged to Masons, Odd Fellows, and whatever K. of H. is. Lived in
Gonzales Co since 1842. Died there at 80 years old. Smiley, Texas Married Rachel CARAWAY,
then Ophelia/Othelia SEALE. I know Ophelia's family but am curious about his. I have some
records from this county. Can not find his parents. Family story is he was a stowaway from
Ireland at age 14. However, I think it is possible he jumped ship as he took the name Williams.
Family lore has it that he changed his name and never told anyone what the real name was. He had
13+ kids. I have their names. Any help you can give me on his ancestry or his parent's will be
greatly appreciated. We have looked for awhile. Sue

Looking for the ancestors of Cynthia KELLY and William SMOTHERS. William Smothers
married Cynthia Kelly June 09, 1844 Gonzales County, Texas and had eight children. He
maintained two stores in Hallettsville. TX and was a militant in having Hallettsville established as
the county seat rather than Petersburg (early Zumwalt Settlement) to the south. When Petersburg
lost the election for seat and refused to give up the county records, Smothers formed a posse,
seized the records in Petersburg and escorted them to Hallettsville to the temporary county seat
buildings he had provided for the new officials. William Smothers was a "hell-raiser" who loved to
drink and gamble and in 1850 operated a liquor store in Hallettsville and operated a pool hall and
gaming room in the establishment, indicted at least 9 times for breaking local liquor laws and over
17 times for gambling. Multiple times he was either on the receiving or giving end of local assault
cases, acquitted in some and paying fines in others. After all that he was elected sheriff in 1860 a!
nd active in recruiting companies of local men for frontier service as rangers and later the Civil
War. He was in the freighting business and finally killed in a shoot out with a Union agent in
1863. His son A.J. Smothers was Sheriff of Lavaca Co in 1882-1888. Regards, Debbie

I have been excited to find evidence of my gggrandfather mentioned in several
of the archived Gonzales Inquirer newpapers articles beginning about 1871.
As I have little hope of being able to travel to Gonzales from here in Fort
Worth any time soon, I'd like to inquire if there is anyway I could beg, pay,
or plead with someone there to copy some of these articles for me. In one of
the articles I hope to find the mention of the marriage of my ggrandfather
and the mention of his wife's name which has been unknown for many years. My
gggrandfather was the Rev. Geo. W. SMITH. I have made notes of many of the
dates he was in the newspaper. Lela Butler, rbutler41@aol.com

McGAHAN or McGHAN, Frances Marie b. abt. 1835, died 31 May 1862 in childbirth. Both she
and baby died, leaving a 20 Mo. old daughter who ws sent to GA to live with Aunt and Uncle.
This was my G-Grandmother. At the time, my G-Grandfather was gone to war. His name is
William James McGahan. I looked over all of the cemetary lists for Gonzales Co. and did not find
her name. Is there a veteran's retirement home there, or has there ever been? I always heard that
my G-Grandfather lived there after he got older, until he died 11 Apr. abt. 1911 or 1913. My
Mother visited him there when she was a little girl. (I think). I appreciate it more than you know.
Thank you. Ollie James

in this household. Iris Lipscomb is the former Iris S. BOOTHE (b. ca. January 1883 TX),
daughter of David Boothe (b. ca. January 1859 TX) and an unknown first wife. She is the step
daughter of my GGgrandfather's sister, Lavenia MAY. Found living in the household of this
family is Iris' half-brother, Job Orville Boothe (b.ca.July 1898 Caldwell Co., TX). Job is the eldest
of two children born to David and his second wife, Lavenia (May) GIESE (b.ca.September 1872,
Washington Co., TX, d.ca.1946, Freestone Co., TX). Job later married a woman named Grace
and had two children, Job Orville Jr. and Grace Iris. Any assistance in tracking the descendants of
either of these families will be greatly appreciated. TIA - Herman
