| Last Monday
was the day appointed for the Elm Creek Jockey Club and Schutzen Berein
to hold their annual picnic. We accepted an invitation from
Walter Short to drive out to the grounds, a distance of ten miles,
behind his beautiful buggy animal "Bird." With such a
pleasant company and such an excellent team the drive was a most
delightful one. On arriving on the grounds we found a large
attendance of the most influential men in that community, as well as
from all over the county, and almost every man present had either a
horse or a gun to display. The horse show consumed nearly the
entire morning. The followis a list of prizes: |
| AWARDS ON HORSE SHOW 1st Blue ribbon
to Anna Wilkes, owned by Ed
Tewis. Sired by Marshal Wilkes
2nd Red ribbon to No Name owned by Lewis Tewis. Sired by Kentucky Chief |
| The next awards were on the
entry of roadsters and draft stock; ten colts entered: 1st Blue ribbon to Black Colt, out of Palmetto Mare. Sired by Stonewall Jackson, Pencheron stock. All owned by H. O. Brahan 2nd Red ribbon to Brown Colt owned by Albert Hoffman. Sired by Wm. Molz's iron-grey Norman stallion. |
| MULE COLTS 1st
Blue Ribbon to colt owned by H. McBee. Sired by Napoleon
2nd Red ribbon to colt owned by Gus Enck. Sired by Zieten |
| All colts and
stock entered were owned by members of the Elm Creek Jockey Club.
Some racing was indulged in, also an exhibition trow was given for the
benefit of spectators, by Joe Short driving his beautiful bay trotter, Bird; W. B. Mullen driving Marshall
Wilkes, and Wm. Stein driving Maid
Clay, all three noble Trotters and it was hard to tell which was
the favorite. It may be seen that in the one year of
existense of the club, the members have greatly improved their stock,
and it can be seen that all are still striving to excel each other in
fine stock.. It is doubful as to which stallion atrracted the most
attention, Marshall Wilkes
owned by W. B. Mullen, or a 8 year old colt of his, out of a Palmetto
mare, which is owned by H. Olah Brahan After the horses were all exhibited it was announced that dinner was prepared down on the creek, about 100 yards from the track, and as the Olmus (colored) band led the way discoursing sweet music, the crowd followed. Dinner had been prepared for visitors by an old colored aunty, most of the families in the neighborhood had brought picnic dinners, and one of those, Mr. Paul Hellmann and lady, we are indebted for a most delicious repast. Dinner being over the prize shooting commenced and continued during the entire evening. |
