| Four escape from Guadalupe County Jail The first
"break" from the new Guadalupe County jail occurred at 5 p.m. Saturday
when four prisoners being held for various crimes made their escape by
breaking in a grating on the heating system and doing the incredible
stunt of crawling down two stories through the heating system
pipes. When over the residence part of the jail, they broke
through the pipe and the ceiling, dropped to the floor and pillaged the
rooms. They secured $16 in cash, several suits of clothes, a
diamond wedding ring and a loaded revolver and made their escape.
An African American trusty in the jail yard saw the last one leave and
gave the alarm. The three white men run north into the city while
the Hispanic made for the river bottom to the south. Near North
San Marcos St. the trio endeavored to get possession of an African
American's car parked on the street but the owner seeing them gave the
alarm and they fled north several blocks. Here they saw Mrs.
Marcus Terry standing near her car, which had just been filled with
gas. They held her up at the point of the gun, commandeered the
car and fled. Up to the time of going to press no word has been
received as to their whereabouts, though every effort for their capture
ahs been made. Sheriff Saegert believes they have fled the state
and hopes they will be eventually apprehended.
An Examination Monday by architects and supply men show that steel bars should have been placed through tese pipes at intervals, and that gratings should have been on outside of cell blocks instead of inside. These conditions are now being remedied. The report that all available deputies were at the races or just "loafing" on the job is erroneous, as our sheriff, who has the reputation of being one of the best in Texas, and his splendid corps of deputies were, as usual, on the job. Those escaping just took a big chance and with plenty of luck, won. Sheriff A. W. Saegert wednesday filed charges and swore out warrants for the three white men for robbery with firearms which carried the death penalty, and also for thesft of over $50. This action will materially assist in their utimate capture and conviction. Seguin Enterprise, April 30, 1937. |
