| Medlin wins Sheriff's Race Phil M. (Buddy)
Medlin, a 32 year old World War II Veteran, yesterday nosed out Max
Bergfeld, Seguin city marshall, for County Sheriff, and Albert W.
Saegert, retiring sheriff, defeated Alfred Koebig, Geronimo Merchant
for the judgeship of Guadalupe County, in one of the closet and most
exciting election campaigns ever held in this county.
The two races topped a list of county campaigns for various offices, as the judgeship was left vacant when Judge H. A. Heideke decided to run for the state legislature and the sheriff's contest left wide open when Sheriff Albert Saegert elected to run for the office of judge. Medlin won by slightly more than 100 votes. Koebig ran Saegert neck and neck from the start and Medlin and Bergfeld also staged a stretch drive in the ballot count to a photo finish. Saegert led by 18 votes in the final unofficial count. A. A. Bading was returned to the office of assessor collector by a comfortable margin over two other aspirants and Max Weinert maintained a slight margin over his opponent for county school superintendent, Robert M. Blumberg by less than 10 percent of the vote. Going back into the district clerks office by a 2 to 1 margin was Arthur Tschoepe, who defeated Garland Powers. Clarence Aubel defeated Harry D. Voges, incumbent, for commissioner in precinct No. 3, with Arno Kneupper trailing a poor third. In precinct No. 4 Wm. Maierhofer was the winner with 367 votes, beating Albert Mattke, who had 270. Will J. Blanks, who was not a candidate for re-election, received 61 write-in votes. B. A. Koehler defeated Max Heinsohn, incumbent, for constable in precinct No. 2 by vote of 373 to 333. Alwen E. Pape for County Attorney, Frank (Doc) Schmidt for county clerk, Walter E. Borgfeld for county commissioner and Wm. Staats for Justice of the Peace Prec. 3, went into those offices unopposed.
