| Arson suspected in Wuest's fire Fire and police
investigators are pushing a search this week into the fire, which they
said was "deliberately set," which ravaged Wuest's Super Market, 434 N.
Austin St., early Sunday morning.
No official estimate of the damage in the fire has been released, but unofficial estimates range from $80,000 to $1000,000. The alarm was turned in Saturday at 4:51 a.m. by two men who noticed the smoke while walking by the store. They ran to the Central Fire Station, which is two blocks away, and reported it. Fire Marshal Raymond Schulz said Tuesday that the fire was definitely the work of an arsonist. He said three fires were set inside the super market. "We have two or three good leads, but you never know what will happen in this type of case," he stated, while noting that arson cases are very difficult to prove. Schulz and police detective were in New Braunfels Wednesday to continue the investigation there, for a possible connection between Saturday's fire and one which heavily damaged the Wuest store in New Braunfels several months ago. Although the alarm was turned in at 4:51 a.m., officials at the scene Saturday morning estimated the fire had been burning for an hour or more when it was discovered. Major damage was centered in the northwest portion of the store. Another fire apparently started in the southeast corner of the building. Wuest's officials at the scene said damage to the contents of the store was 90 to 100 percent. Some items, such as meat in a long display freezer, were ruined by the fire and heat, but most damage was caused by smoke. Windows and walls of the building were also darkened by smoke. As a result of the fire, it was noted that Seguin residents can expect an increase in fire insurance premiums for next year. Seguin has enjoyed the maximum reduction on the fire insurance key rate for several years. Seguin Enterprise, February 27, 1969 |
