Well we have a small mystery on our hands! Recently Tracy, a resident of Roby, Texas, found ninteen quilting squares, each with a different individual's name. In addition to the name, most have a town listed, I assume where the individual lived. Each square has the date "1931" or "1932". Nothing more is known about the the intended use of the squares or any information about the families of the individuals listed. CLICK HERE to see a list of the names and hopefully images of the squares can be provided later. If anyone can shed any light on the 'quilting project' or the location of a listed individual (or descendants), please send an email to Hugh Swift

AN UPDATE!

Gerry found most of these people on the 1930 census and has the following comments:

" .... At least I found most of the people listed on the 1930 census there working at a Plaster Mill and living in Pct 2 Dist 4. The names I found are: Carlos A and Hattie Johnson...truck driver, Sam E and Mary B Teague...laborer, James W and Bernice Roberts...laborer, H Clifford and Bertha Carr...laborer, Clyde and Cora Lockhart...mechanic, George and Margie Hunt...millwright, John W and Pinkey Gibbens...laborer, Harry M and Lessie Rawlins...shovel operator, William C and Vergie Lockhart...laborer, Demps N and Abbie Jones...calciner. All these work at the Plaster Mill. Also in Fisher Co are Riley H and Mamie Barnes...farmer, John J and Ida Polk...school bus driver, Ray and Ruby Ashley....electrician power lines. Living in Hamlin, Jones Co is Cecil R and Effie Herrald...forman gypsom mill. The others, Tolar, Wilson, Hamilton, and Ashley could have been part of the quilting club but missing the 1930 census. I hope this helps solve the mystery. You might see if there are any newspaper records that mention the Farm Extention Club meetings. I found records of my grandmas and aunts in Brown Co,TX from the '30's......"

THANKS GERRY

Clydene from Vallejo, California sent the followiing information:
"...I also found 20 quilt blocks identical to the ones you describe but the names on my blocks are, of course, different. Some, however are noted as being from Anson, & Lamesa and various other cities. I found them in my mother's chest and inquired what they were. She said they were her "Friendship Quilt Blocks" but that she had never finished them. Apparently, friends and family members made one and traded it with another friend or family member.

Mom is gone but I had her blocks made into a quilt and it hangs on my wall in the hall. It is one of my most valued posesions with my Great Aunt, step Grandmother, a second cousin, aunt and various other names that I do not know who they are greet me every day. Here are the names that I do not know:

Etta Mae Brown 1941 Lamesa TX
Dessie Sims Wills Point TX
Ethel Sims, Wills Polint 1934
Evelyn Dremon
Jessie Ross McClure Lamesa TX
Mrs. H. H. Bean 1934
Mrs. T. L. Wallace
Inez Gouse Anson TX
Mrs. K. C. Hughes, Anson TX
Mrs Hughes Anson TX
Mrs. Lula Moreland Lamesa TX 1939
Mrs. Ray/Roy Bottoms Anson, Texas 1934
Mrs. Lea Bagwell 1939
Mrs. T. E. Temple Lamesa TX
Mrs. J.C. Steward, Lamesa TX..."

Thanks for the information Clydene.
