Obituary of Sister Angela Arencibia, OSB (Elvira de la Caridad Arencibia)
Sept. 8, 1901 - March 22, 2005 Sr. Angela Arencibia, a Benedictine sister of Boerne, died at the age of 103. Elvira de la Caridad Arencibia was born on Sept. 8, 1901, on the Isle of Pines, Cuba, to Domingo and Maria Arencibia. Sr. Angela met the Benedictine sisters when they came to establish their foundation in 1911. The sisters immediately began teaching the children on the isle and she became very close to them and boarded with them for a while. When the sisters had to leave the isle in 1919, she asked to come with them. She was accepted to the postulancy on June 18, 1919, on the steamboat. She entered the novitiate on June 13, 1920, made first vows on Aug. 10, 1921, and took her final vows on Aug. 20, 1924. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee on Aug. 12, 1946, her Golden Jubilee on June 6, 1971, and her 60th Jubilee on May 30, 1981. Thereafter, she did not want to celebrate any more anniversaries. Sr. Angela received her US citizenship in 1931. She received her bachelor of arts in education from Incarnate Word College in 1949. Her teaching career spanned 50 years. She taught in St. Luke's school in Loire, Texas, at St. Joseph school in Leming, Texas; Sacred Heart school in Rockne, Texas; Immaculate Heart School, Sacred Heart School and St. Benedict School in San Antonio.

Sr. Angela retired from teaching in 1969 and moved into in food service for St. Albert Hall in Boerne. In 1982, she again retired and moved to do internal ministry at the Benedictine monastery in Boerne. All services were held at the Benedictine Sisters' Monastery Chapel at 416 W. Highland, Boerne.
