MARTHA TAYLOR BERCKENHOFF GAERTNER

YOAKUM—Martha Gaertner, 75, of Yoakum, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002.

She was born Nov. 11, 1926, in Sharon, Tenn., to the late Albert Sidney and Virginia D. Parham Taylor. She was a homemaker and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a member of Court St. Paul No. 1604 Catholic Daughters of America of Shiner.

Survivors: stepdaughter, Sarah Gaertner of Austin; stepson, James Frank Gaertner of Huntsville; sister, Mary Williams of Chicago; brother, James Albert Taylor of Hobart, Ind.; and three grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husbands, Rudy F. Gaertner and Dr. Fred Berckenhoff; and parents.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. tonight at Buffington Funeral Home chapel. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Rev. Gary Janak officiating.

Burial will be at Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Buffington Funeral Home, Yoakum, 361-293-2333.

Memorials: St. Joseph School Endowment Fund, St. Joseph Building Fund or donor's choice.

MEETS HORRIBLE DEATH

Farmer Dies of Injuries by Stalk Cutter in Runaway

Shiner, Tex., Jan. 4—Joseph Gajdos, well-known farmer of this place, was fatally injured yesterday afternoon when the team which he was driving to a stalk-cutter became frightened at a rabbit and ran away, throwing him ino the blades.

The team was finally stopped by the reins catching in a wheel and Mr. Gajdos was found by a passer-by. Althoughhis body was horribly mangled and it required an hour and 30 minutes to extricate him, which required the taking apart of the entire machine, he lived for three hours, during most of the time he was conscious.

He was about 45 years of age and is survived by a family, his oldest son at this time being seriously ill.

HALLETTSVILLE - Ella Galetka, 80, of Hallettsville, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004.

She was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Lavaca County, to the late Henry Julius and Alma Ivy Reckaway Klimitchek. She was a member of Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church.

Survivors: husband, Alex Galetka; and sister, Lula Parr of Hallettsville.

Preceded in death by: sisters, Ima Garmon and Stella Debord; and brothers, Emil Klimitchek, Robert Klimitchek, Louis Klimitchek, and Raymond Klimitchek.

Visitation will begin 11 a.m. Sunday at Kubena Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating.

Burial will be at Vsetin Cemetery. Kubena Funeral Home, Hallettsville, 361-798-3271.

MARTIN GALETKA

Sublime, Texas, February 22. Mr. Martin Galetka, a prominent farmer living north of this place, went hunting yesterday in company with a friend. They sat down on a dry water trough in Mr. Appelt's pasture, and Mr. Galetka laid his shotgun insdiee of the trough. After a while they got up, and Mr. Galetka in tkaing hold of his gun struck one of the hammers against the edge of the trough, which dischargeed the gun, the whole load of fifteen buckshot striking him from behind in the left side of the head. The shot tore a hole in his head about 1 1-2 inches wide, exposing the brain. It was a glance shot. Mr. Galetka fell against a log, cracking his skull still more. His companion, thinking Mr. Galetka to be dead, ran to the nearest justice of the peace to report the occurrence, and upon arrival of the justice they found Mr. Galetka to be alive. He had turned his body around, and was lying wih the wounded part of his head in a pool of mud. He was then removed to his home, wehere Dr. Brewer of Halletsville dressed and cleaned the wounds.

Mr. Galetka is still unconscious, but Dr. Brewer says there is hope for his recovery.

Martin Galetka was buried in the Vsetin Cemetery. His marker states that he was 64 years old and died 9 Mar 1897, which is a year too early.

RUBEN SEVERO GARCIA

RUBEN SEVERO GARCIA, age 56, passed away April 16, 2008. He was the son of Sebero and Tules Garcia of Yoakum, Texas. He was a free spirit, a fun loving guy, a loyal friend, and a proud father and grandfather. He loved to tell jokes, laugh, sing and he was a true ladies man. A memorial will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday April 20th at Hosanna Community Church 19283 Hufsmith-Kohrville Rd Tomball, TX 77375. He will be laid to rest in Yoakum between his parents. A service will also be held in Yoakum next week.

Ruben was born September 3, 1951 in Lavaca County to Sebero and Tules Loya Garcia. He graduated from Yoakum High School, Class of 1970. He is survived by daughter Leila Kristine Garcia. Contributed by Rebecca Herder.

On Sunday afternoon last, about 1 1/2 o'clock, Frank Hawks shot Thomas Garrett, who died almost instantaneously. From what we heard the following [sic.] will show about the circumstances connected with the killing of young Garrett. The wife of Mr. Hawks, who is also the sister of Garrett, had left her husband and gone home to her relations, doing so of her own free will and accord, with the determination of not living with him. Hawks, on Sunday afternoon, was on the place of Dr. Ross, near Sweet Home, seeking a reconciliation or a private interview with his wife, which she, being sick, declined to grant. Young Garrett, rode up to the place and went into the house, where he talked with Dr. Ross and others, while Hawks was outside. When about to leave, he was asked not to go, as he might get into a quarrel with Hawks but insisting upon starting, some one gave him a pistol, which was put into his pocket. He had reached the gate, when Hawks called to him, saying: "I understand you said your sister should not live with me again." He replied: "I don't know as I said so, Frank, but if I did, I stick to it." Hawks instantly said, "Then I'll kill you," and fired rapidly two shots, one wounding Garrett in the finger and the other striking him in the shoulder, and ranging downward in the breat severing some of the large blood vessels. The pistol he had in his pocket fell out to the ground, and he died in about twenty seconds. Hawks is a young man of about 22 years of age, and Garrett about 17 or 18 years. The officers have been in pursuit of Hawks, but have not succeeded in arresting him. —Hallettsville Herald.

PEDRO L. (PETE) GARZA born February 22, 1915 in Yoakum, Texas passed away August 14, 2009 at the age of 94. He is preceded in death by his wife, Manuela Garza; and infant daughter Elizabeth Garza. He is survived by daughters, Angelita Arriaga and husband Anthony; Gloria Gonzalez and husband Rudy G.; sons, Rico and wife Vera; Rumen and wife Mary; Ernest and wife Virginia; and Rudy; fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion Rachel Garcia.

Mr.Garza was an independent ice distributor for many years. He also served as an officer and national representative for the Woodsman of the World and was very involve with the Ripley House and Harris County Hospital District.

The Visitation will be held Monday, August 17, 2009 from 5-9pm with a 7:30 Rosary at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 11am in Forest Park Lawndale's Main Chapel with interment immediately following.

DEATH FROM HYDROPHOBIA

A dispatch in the Hoston Chronicle of Wednesday afternoon tells of the death of Herbert Gebauer, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Gebauer, [former] residents of the Old Kinkler community in Lavaca county, which took place Tuesday. Young Gebauer was bitten by a rabid dog five months ago, and although he took the Pasteur treatment, it did not result in immunity, and he died a horrible death from hydrophobia.

It is said that once in every 300 cases taking the Pasteur treatment, it will fail to immunize the patient.

A family by the name of Jos. Gebauer lived near Weimar many years ago, moving from here to the Austin section, but whether this is the same family we do not know. The young man's body was buried at Hallettsville today.

Herbert Gebauer, 28 Nov 1917-10 May 1938, was buried in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Yoakum, Texas, February 11.—M. E. Gebert, a leading merchant of this city, died at his home at 4 p. m. yesterday after an illness of about two weeks. Deceased came to Yoakum from Schulenburg ten years ago, and since then has conducted a successful dry goods and grocery business on Grand avenue, and during this time he has amassed considerable property. He leaves a wife and child.

G. H., "Gibby" Gerdes, age 83 years, 4 months and 15 days of Hallettsville died Tuesday, January 7, 1997.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 at the Kubena Funeral Home chapel.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville with the Rev. John Peters officiating.

Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home, Hallettsville.

He was born Aug. 22, 1913 in Hallettsville to the late Victor and Mary Kuntz Gerdes.  He was a former county auditor for Lavaca and Gonzales County.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2433 and former member of the Hallettsville Volunteer Fire Department and Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Hemmi Gerdes; one daughter, Judy Evans of Hallettsville; one son, G.H. "Gibbo" Gerdes Jr., of Luling; one sister, Mildred O'Brien of Hallettsville; one brother, Victor B. Gerdes of New Jersey; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A tragedy, most horrible and shocking in its details, was enacted in the yard of Mr. C. Gerdes' gin Saturday night. A few friends and acquaintances had assembled at Mr. Gerdes' residence to spend an evening pleasantly. At about 11 o'clock they noticed four negroes on their premises and asked them to give an account for themselves. At this juncture Casper Gerders apeared on the scene and commanded the negroes to leave. Two of the negroes took leave immediately, but the other two—Wallace Williams and Pete Mitchell—positively refused to leave and began to hurl all sorts of foul epithets at Casper, who resented the insults by making a move to compel them to leave; the negroes then drew their knives and made several attempts to cut Casper, but they were unsuccessful. The noise brought John Gerdes of Antioch, who was boarding with his uncle, to the yard. John demanded an apology from the negroes for their insulting language, whereupon Wallace Williams pounced upon him and drove a pocket knife up to the handle into his temple (or thereabouts). Gerdes lingered until Sunday morning at 6 o'clock in an unconscious state and died. The negroes were shortly afterwards arrested and placed in jail by City Marshal Ballard. Gerdes was an estimable young man and leaves a wife and three children to mourn his cruel taking off. The examining trial of Williams and Mitchel was held Monday and resulted in their being bound over to await the action of the grand jury, which has since found a bill against them for murder in the second degree.—Halletsville Herald.

Forest Fire Victim's Funeral Saturday

The last sad rites for the deceased John Benedict Gerdes, one of the victims at the Cody, Wyoming, forest fire, will be conducted Saturday morning. The body will arrive here Friday night on the 8:40 train from Houston.

The funeral procession will leave the family residence at 9:00 o'clock and services will be held at the Koerth Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. The remains will be laid to rest in the Koerth Catholic cemetery.

Halletsville, August 31. – Mrs. Kate Gerdes, wife of John Gerdes, died yesterday afternoon after an illness of a week’s duration. Deceased was 29 years and two days old and is survived by a husband and two little children. The remains were shipped to Cuero for interment.

HALLETTSVILLE - Lucille Marie Gerdes, 91, died March 14, 2007. She was born Aug. 2, 1915, to Lutzie and Myrtle Phelps Hemmi, in Hallettsville.

She married G.H. "Gibby" Gerdes on June 11, 1935 in Hallettsville. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville.

Lucille is survived by her son, G.H. "Gibbo" Gerdes Jr.; her daughter, Judy Evans and husband James; her sister Marionell Smothers; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Lucille was preceded in death by: husband; parents; brother, Carl Hemmi; and sister, Majorie Fietsam.

Services will begin at 10 a.m., today at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Memorials: Hospice of South Texas.

Lightning's Work.—Monday afternoon [lightning] struck the house of Mr. Gerlich, near Monseratte, and came down the chimney, demolished the clock on the mantlepiece, and struck Mrs. Gerlich, killing her instantly, and paralyzing a little child in her ams. Other members of the family in the same room were not hurt.

Hermina Gerlich, 1869-1896, was buried in the Koerth Cemetery.

Ella Gerloff, 78, of Moulton, died Monday, May 18, 1981, in the Lavaca Medical Center in Hallettsville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Moulton, with burial in the Moulton City Cemetery, under direction of Smith Funeral Home in Moulton.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Elvera Nelson and Mrs. Esther Mae Collins both of Washington state, and Mrs. Elnora Buehring of Moulton; a brother, Walter Brunkenhoefer of Shiner; a sister, Mrs. Erna Meinke of Yoakum; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

ETHEL "ETTIE" IONE GINN, born July 16, 1914 in Yoakum, Texas entered into eternal rest August 22, 2007 in Bedford, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband of 58yrs, Elwood E. Ginn; daughter-in-law, Celeste Ginn; special niece-in-law, Becky Evetts. She is survived by her sons: Duane E. Ginn, Steven E. Ginn and wife Sue, Kenneth Ginn and wife Carolyn; special nephew, Sam Evetts; special nieces, Lauren Evetts Ball and husband Donald, Sandra Evetts Harrison and husband Glenn; 15 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. Ettie was a member of the Lindale Church of Christ for over 50yrs. She was also a charter member of the Lindale Church of Christ. A Funeral Service will be 10:00am, Saturday August 25, 2007 at Brookside Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow in Brookside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Boles Home in Quilan, TX.

Rebecca Herder contributed this obituary and researched Mrs. Ginn further: Ethel was the oldest child of Clark A and Laura Dowlearn. They owned a dairy farm in Prec. 7 of Lavaca County on April 21, 1930. Siblings at that time included Maudelle (9), Leonard P. (6), and Jack (6/12 months). Husband, Elwood Everett Ginn, died in Harris County on October 29, 1991.

Mrs. Annie Glass Dies Suddenly; Rites Held Friday

GARWOOD— Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Glass, 78 wife of the late Willard W. Glass, were held at Mill-Bauer funeral home in Eagle Lake Dec. 19 with interment in the family plot at Anders [Andrews] Chapel near Schulenburg.

The Rev. Paul A. Grout Jr., Methodist minister of Garwood, officiated and Mrs. Herbert Engstrom played soft organ music during the service.

Mrs. Glass, daughter of the late Anderson T. and Cora Tull Smith was born Sept. 11, 1880, at Floresville, and died suddenly in her home in Garwood Dec. 17, while sitting at the lunch table.

She was married to Willard Glass in 1916 and had made her home, with the exception of a few years, in Garwood, ever since.

Mrs. Glass became affiliated with the Methodist church in her childhood in Schulenburg.

She is survived by a stepson, Lee Glass, whom she had raised since he was 4 years old, 2 sisters, Mrs. Charles richartt and Mrs. Les Lanier of Garwood, 2 brothers, C. W. Smith of Highlands and A. T. Smith of Dayton, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers were her nephews, Oscar Smith of Highlands, Wilber Smith of Weimar, Foy L. Wanier of San Antonio, Jack Laner of Ft. Worth, M. G. Lanier of Garwood and Leon Lanier of Houston.

Out of town relatives and friends attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Smith, Oscar Smith and Mrs. Bell Moore of Highlands; Mr. and Mrs. A. T. CLARA H. GLASS

News was received here Wednesday morning of the death and burial of Mrs. Glass, widow of the late Rev. Glass, former well known residents of Lavaca county. Her death occurred at Cheyenne, Okla., where she was visiting one of her children, and the remains were brought to Schulenburg and from that point interred in the cemetery at Andrews’ Chapel. Mrs. Glass was a sister of Mrs. Chas. Rose of Schulenburg, a christian from early childhood, and a lady of many endearing traits of character. Her funeral was largely attended. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved family in their affliction.

Transcribed by Dorothy Albrecht. According to Clara Glass's grave stone, she was born in Alabama on February 27, 1837 and died on December 26, 1907. Her husband was the Reverend T. W. Glass.

Funeral Services For Theo Golsch 68 At Hallettsville

Funeral services for Theo. A. Golsch, 68, prominent Hallettsville area farmer and father of Mrs. August Cernoch of Weimar, were held Feb. 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hallettsville.

Mr. Golsch died unexpectedly at his home at 6 p.m. on Feb. 15.

A lifelong resident of Lavaca County, where he farmed all his life, he was appointed state president of the [Farmers] League by the late Archbishop Droessarts at the time that organization was formed. He helped organized the Lavaca County Soil Conservation District and was one of its first supervisors as well as secretary-treasurer. He served on the Hallettsville School Board more than 15 years, was a member of the American Legion and a former director of the Hallettsville Chamber oof Commerce. He was president of the Hallettsville branch of the Catholic Knights of America for 32 years and had served as state president and vice-president of that organization.

He was one of those most instrumental in bringing electrical power to the farms of his community through San Bernard Electric Coop, and since 1947 had been a director of the cooperative.

Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Mary Hessler, whom he married in 1924; three sons, Hilbert of San Antonio, Siegried of Hallettsville and Theo A. (Teddy) Golsch Jr. of San Antonio; four daughters, Mrs. George Carley of San Antonio, Mrs. Cernoch here, Mrs. Roman Shimek of Hallettsville and Miss Beatrice Golsch at home; 11 grandchildren and a half-sister, Mrs. Annie Dworsky of Hallettsville.

Birdie Lorea Hunter Good

BIRDIE LOREA HUNTER GOOD went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview, Texas at the age of 87. She was born in Gonzales County on July 20, 1920 to Joseph Daniel Hunter and Adeline Jones Hunter. She was the youngest girl of 9 children and she spent the first 14 years of her life in Lavaca. In 1936 she moved to Houston to live with her sister Sara Hunter Sligh and to attend Sam Houston High School where she was a member of the Black Battalion Drill Team. She was a former DAR member and a descendant of Washington's Army at Valley Forge, but her heart belonged to Texas. Her greatest honor was to be a member of the DRT (Daughters of the Republic of Texas) where she was a member emeritus of the Miss Ima Hogg Chapter. During her years of service, she was the Fifth Vice-President General and the Recording Secretary for the State DRT. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Lamar Harding Good, daughter, Katherine G. Weatherspoon, special son-in-law William James Weatherspoon, two precious grandchildren Madeline "Mattie" Weatherspoon and William Jeffrey Weatherspoon, all of Longview, Texas. She is also survived by her two brothers and their wives, Dempsey and Ruth Hunter of Houston and Stayton and Carolyn Hunter of Weimer, one sister, Josephine Irvin of Yoakum, sister-in-law, Nelda Hunter of Iola, and many nieces and nephews. Deceased family members are Thomas Hunter, Sara Sligh, VeElla Brewer, Ada Jane Davis, Ernest D. Hunter and, step-sister, Rosalie Graham Boone. Special friends who are like family are Shirley and Joe Holcomb. We would like to extend our special thanks to Dr. Rex Hawkins and his nurse, Dr. George Conklin and his nurse, Delores, George Walls and Tootie Calahan, Dr. Landrum and Pastor Ronnie Borner, Connie Harper, and the people at the El Paso Credit Union who were always so helpful. Thanks also to our wonderful neighbors in West University on Albans Rd., to Ray Rutledge at the American Legion Post 77, Joe and Doris Leslie, great niece, Donna Boone Stewart, and Donald and Mary Lou Boone. Hallettsville, Feb. 8.—A. F Graeber died suddenly this morning at his home. He had been in ill health for several years and for the past four weeks had been confined to his home. He had, however, improved to such an extent that he had met a number of friends last evening at his home and this morning ate a hearty breakfast. After this he went to his room to lie down, where shortly afterwards he was found dead by his wife.

Mr. Graeber was nearly sixty years of age and had been a resident of this place since 1872, where he conducted a blacksmith shop until several years ago, when he retired.

GEORGE NEWTON GRAHAM, age 84 died on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 in Livingston, TX. He was born on November 11, 1918 in Humble, TX, the son of Samford and Mary Fisher Graham. He served in the Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Stanley and Dede Ecke. He is survived by his wife, Ida Graham of Livingston, TX; four sons, Kenneth Ray Hemmi of Livingston, TX, Aaron Graham of Onalaska, TX, George N. Graham, Jr. of Oklahoma and Norman Graham of Porter, TX; two daughters, Teresa Wedgeworth of Elkhart, TX and Faye Johnson of South Dakota; sister, Ruth Emerson of Onalaska, TX; special grandsons, Aaron J. "A.J." Graham, Jr.; and many other grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 11, 2003 at Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, TX from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, TX. Bro. Ted Summers will conduct the service. Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 13, 2003 at Moulton Catholic Cemetery in Moulton, TX. Cochran Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ida Berckenhoff Graham, age 77, died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at her home in Livingston.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1926 in Moulton, the daughter of Fred Berckenhoff and Kristina (Koudelka) Berckenhoff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Graham Sr., and two brothers, Rudy Berckenhoff and Bill Berckenhoff.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-laws [sic], Kenneth Ray Hemmi of Livingston and Aaron J. and Teresa Graham of Onalaska; a grandson, Aaron J. Graham, Jr. of Onalaska; two stepdaughters, Teresa Wedgeworth of Elkhart and Faye Johnson of South Dakota; two stepsons, George N. Graham Jr. of Oklahoma and Norman Graham of Porter; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Otto and Marge Berckenhoff and Dennis and Pat Berckenhoff of Moulton; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sophie Barta of Moulton, Dorothy and Ben Ulbrich of Houston, and Rose and Gene Selzer of Moulton.

The family received friends from 6 p.m. until p.m. [sic] Thursday, Nov. 20 at Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, and on Friday, Nov. 21 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Moulton.

Burial followed in the Moulton Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were nephews: Allen Barta, Gregory Berckenhoff, Kevin Berckenhoff, Larry Berckenhoff, Vernon Meazle and Gene Selzer Jr.

Cochran Funeral Home and Smith Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.

HALLETTSVILLE - Miss Agnes A. Grahmann, 80, of Victoria, formerly of Cuero, died in a local nursing home Thursday, May 16, 1991, following a lengthy illness.

Miss Grahmann was born Sept. 17, 1910, in Lavaca County, to the late Frank and Antonette Bechacek [sic] Grahmann and was a retired licensed vocational nurse. She worked for Dr. Praether in Cuero for 28 years and later in Victoria. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Sacred Heart Club and the St. Jude Society.

Survivors: Sisters, Miss Mary Grahmann and Mrs. Bernadine Kolacny, both of Hallettsville, Mrs. Wilhelmina Zafereo of Victoria and Mrs. Clara Heinsohn of Yoakum; brothers, Frank Grahmann of Hallettsville and Alvin Grahmann of Schulenburg.

Preceded in death by parents, brother and sister.

Visitation until 11 a.m. Saturday at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville.

Services 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville, the Rev. Celestino Say officiating.

Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Kubena Funeral Home, Hallettsville, 798-3271.

Alvin J. Grahmann - VICTORIA

Alvin J. Grahmann, well-known businessman, owner and operator of Grahmann's True Value Stores of Hallettsville and Schulenburg died Saturday, May 28, 2005 at the age of 80 at his home in St. John's community near Schulenburg, Texas.

Visitation will be from 12 noon to 5pm on Monday, May 30, 2005 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville, Texas.

A memorial service and rosary will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg on Monday, May 30, 2005 with visitation starting and at 6 pm and Rosary at 7pm.

Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville Tuesday, May 31, 2005. Visitation will begin at 9am, rosary at 9:30 and Funeral services at 10am.

Interment will be at Sacred Heart Mausoleum in Hallettsville.

Alvin was born in Hallettsville on March 14, 1925, the youngest of ten children of Frank and Antoinette Grahmann. He married Adela Etzler on October 28, 1947 in Hallettsville, TX.

He was in the hardware business for 59 years as owner and operator of Grahmann's True Value Stores, Inc. in Hallettsville and Schulenburg. His sons Alvin Paul, Michael and Mark, and daughter Barbara Rainosek will continue management of his family owned business.

He had a lifelong deep involvement in his church and community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Hallettsville and Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Departments, the Hallettsville Industrial Corporation, and the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce. As a member of the Hallettsville Chamber of Commerce, he served on the Board of Directors and as Vice-President. He was a charter member and served on the advisory board of the National Retail Hardware Association. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Hallettsville, and St. Rose of Lima Parish in Schulenburg. Over the years, he attended many church picnics in Hallettsville, Schulenburg and surrounding communities. He donated toward many local organizations. Alvin will always be remembered by his family as dedicated, honest, hardworking, and devoted to his family and faith.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Adela. He is also survived by six children: two daughters, Linda Wright and husband Ron of College Station, and Barbara Rainosek and husband Don of Hallettsville; and four sons, Alvin Paul and wife Barbara of Hallettsville, Forrest and wife Chris of Spicewood, Michael and wife Janice of Schulenburg, and Mark and wife Pam of Hallettsville; fifteen grandchildren, Aaron Wright of Austin, Aric Wright of San Antonio, Scott Rainosek of Austin, James Rainosek of San Antonio, Lisa Koehne and husband Justin of Schulenburg, Steven Grahmann and wife Breann of Victoria, Amy Floyd and husband Jeff of Dallas, Laura Grahmann of Austin, Aaron Grahmann of Dallas, Roxanne Stoever and husband Jeremy of Katy, Renee Dusek and husband Mike of Schulenburg, Kristen Grahmann of Schulenburg, Kelly Beth Grahmann of Corpus Christi, Craig and Kayla Grahmann of Hallettsville; and four great grandchildren Lauren Koehne, Kelci Grahmann, Jack, Dillon, and Copeland Grahmann.

He is also survived by one sister, Wilhelmina Zafereo of Victoria, and by numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and six sisters.

The funeral service officiated by Reverend John Peters, Reverend Timothy Kosler, Reverend Stanley Petru, and Bishop Charles Grahmann.

Music for the funeral mass provided by Denise Drozd. Scripture readings by Elsie Farek. "Grandchildren's Memories" composed by his grandchildren and a special tribute written by his children read by nephew Mark Zafereo.

Pallbearers: his grandsons Aaron Wright, Scott Rainosek, Steven Grahmann, James Rainosek, Aric Wright and Craig Grahmann.

Honorary pallbearers: Justin Koehne, Jeremy Stoever, Jeffrey Floyd, and Mike Dusek and attending members of the Hallettsville and Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Departments and present and past employees of Grahmann's True Value Stores.

Mrs. F. Grahmann Funeral Rites Held Saturday Morning

Mrs. Frank (Antonette) Grahmann, Route 3 Halletsville, died in the Renger Memorial Hospital, Thursday, June 24 at 3:20 p.m. at the age of 83 years, one month and 14 days. She had been in ill health for the past several years and had been admitted to the hospital a few days prior to her passing. Born in Frelsburg, Colorado County, May 10, 1882, she was united in marriage to Frank Grahmann, October 22, 1901. Mr. Grahmann passed away August 5, 1946.

To this union were born 10 children, all of which survive. Namely three sons, Frank, Joe and Alvin, all of Halletsville, seven daughters, Mrs. Herman (Clara) Heinsohn, Miss Elizabeth Grahmann, Miss Mary Grahmann all of Halletsville, Miss Agnes Grahmann and Mrs. George (Wilhelmina) Zafereo of Victoria, Mrs. Frank (Bernadine) Kolacny of Houston., Mrs. Ervin (Louise) Friedrich of Runge, two brothers, Otto Pechacek and Joe Pechacek, both of Houston and two sisters, Mrs. Henry Frazer of Baytown and Mrs. Annie Hermes of New Braunfels, 27 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from Kubena Funeral Home Saturday morning, June 26 beginning at 9:15 and continuing at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of which she was a member at 9:30 with Msgr. Alois Morkovsky officiating.

Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, grandsons Donald Friedrich, Leroy Kolacny, Joe Zafereo, Clarence Schriefer, Alton Grahmann and Charles Grahmann serving as pallbearers.

Funeral services for Bessie Grahmann, 82, of Hallettsville were held Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville with the Rev. John Peters officiating. Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Hallettsville under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home.

Mrs. Grahmann died Aug. 26. Born Dec. 26, 1918, in Danbury to the late Joseph Frank and Rosie Ruzicka Kolacny, she was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville and was a member of KJZT. She and the late Joe "A.J." Grahmann were married Feb. 25, 1941, at St. Mary's Church. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1988.

Survivors include daughter, Patricia Belicik, Hallettsville; son, Alton J. Grahmann, Hallettsville; sister, Lillie Grahmann, Hallettsville; brothers, Frank Kolacny, Houston, Laddie Kolacny, Ganado, and Joe Kolacny, Hallettsville; and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband.

Pallbearers were Chris Belcik, David Belcik, Ervin Kolacny, Ronnie Kolacny, Clarence Schriefer and Mark Zafereo.

Frank Grahmann Dies of Heart Failure

Mr. Frank Grahmann Sr., 69, died of a heart attack Monday a.m. while working in his fields. Mr. Grahmann was seated on top of a load of fodder with one of his daughters and mentioned that he was not feeling well. Just after these words he fell from the wagon and to the ground dead.

The deceased was born in Hanover, Germany in 1877 and came to this country when a young man in 1901, was united in marriage to Antonette Pechacek. Ten children were born to this union and his widow with these children survive, Clara, Elizabeth, Agnes, Mary, Bernadine, Louise, Wilhelmina, Frank Jr., Joe and Alvin. The following brothers and sisters survive. Sister Alfonse and Sister Aloisus of Shiner, Mrs. J.J. Haas, Mrs. Joe Bludau, August, Joe A., Herman of Highland, Alois, Alphonse, Nick, Julius, John, and Carl all of here.

Funeral services will be held at Kubena funeral home Wednesday a.m. at 9:15 and a Requiem Mass will be said in Sacred Heart Church at 9:30 a.m. Rosary will be said here tonight (Monday) at Kubena funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Just recently the mother of the deceased, Mrs. H. Grahmann, died.

Frank J. Grahmann, 81, of Hallettsville died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1993, at 3 p.m.

He was born Aug. 22, 1911 in Lavaca County, son of Frank and Antonette Pechacek Grahmann. He was a retired farmer and rancher and member of the Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville.

Surviving him are his wife, Lillie Grahmann of Hallettsville; a daughter, Evelyn Mozisek of Little Rock, Ark.; a son, Charles A. Grahmann of Schulenburg; five sisters, Mary K. Grahmann of Hallettsville, Clara Heinsohn of Yoakum, Bernadine Kolacny of Houston, Louis Frederich of Runge, Wilhelmina Zafereo of Victoria; a brother, Alvin Grahmann of Schulenburg; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Antonette Pechacek Grahmann; two sisters and one brother.

Visitation began at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 28 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville.

Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28 at Kubena Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville.

The body will lie in state at Kubena Funeral Home until 9 a.m., Friday, at which time it will be taken to Sacred Heart Church, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Rev. Celestino Say will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home, Hallettsville.

Joe A. J. Grahmann, 74, of Hallettsville, died Tuesday, May 31, 1988, at 9:50 a.m., in the Lavaca Medical Center.

He was born November 15, 1913, in Lavaca County, son of the late Frank Grahmann Sr. and Antoinette Pechacek Grahmann. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Society. A retired businessman, he was former owner and operator of Hallettsville Hardware.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Thursday, June 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. The Rev. Celestino Say officiated.

Burial followed in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville was in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie Kolacny Grahmann of Hallettsville; a son Alton J. Grahmann of Hallettsville; a daughter, Patricia Belcik of Hallettsville; two brothers, Frank Grahmann of Hallettsville and Alvin Grahmann of Schulenburg; six sisters, Mary Kay Grahmann and Bernadine Kolacny of Hallettsville; Wilhelmina Zafereo and Agnes Grahmann of Victoria, Clara Heinsohn of Yoakum and Louise Frederick of Runge; and one grandson.

Mrs. W.R. Granberry, 42, passed away from cancer Thursday. She was the daughter of the venerable W.F. Dial and was reared in southern Lavaca County. She married Mr. W.R. Granberry twenty-one years ago and had eight children. She was buried at the family burying ground, some six or eight miles below Hope.

Luke A. Greer Dies At 81 Yrs.

Luke A. Greer, 81, a former Sheriff, died in Dufner Hospital, Thursday, May 26, after a prolonged illness.

The deceasrd was born in Attala County, Mississippi, June 28, 1867, the son of E. P. Greer and Martha Oldham Greer. He came to Texas at an early age and settled in Lavaca County. As a young man he married Sarah Ann Butler, May 26, 1887.

Eight children were born to this union, Earl and Herbert of Hallettsville, Arthur of Harlingen, Willie of Robstown, Mrs. Theo Long and Mrs. Roy Willis of Hallettsville,a nd Mrs. Frank Lierman of Woodsboro. A son, Guy Greer, preceded him in death.

Several years ago he married Mrs. Phoebe Miller, who survives, also a ister, Mrs. Maggie Adams of Yoakum, a brother, J. E. Greer of San Antonio, ten grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Henry Smith, pastor of the First Baptist church, of which the deceased was a member, officiated at the services held at the Kubena Funeral Home and the City Cemetery here, Friday at 4:00 p. m.

Pallbearers wer John Lell, Rogan Beal, Pat Kelly, Jaro Kafka, Chas. Burt, and William Fahrenthold.

Post Special: Yoakum, Aug. 14.--Inez, the 8-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Grobe, died at 3 o'clock this afternoon of diphtheria. This is the only case of diphtheria here in a long time, and it is believed there will be no other, as every possible precaution has been taken. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock tomorrow.

A SUDDEN DEATH.

Section Foreman J. K. Guess died suddenly Sunday night at 11 o’clock. He had been in poor health for several weeks but his death was unexpected. His attendant physician states that his complaint was dropsy of the heart with other complications. Sunday night he was apparently resting easy and sat up for a time. On going back to bed he said he would take a nap and turned over in bed but almost immediately started up and called for help, telling them to go for the doctor at once. The physician was called in haste but on his arrival found Mr. Guess beyond all help.

The deceased was a good railroad man and had been stationed here ten months. He was in his forty-seventh year, and leaves a wife and two sons, Sam and Oliver, both living at Cuero.

The remains were taken to Cuero Monday for interment.

The deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity.

Guin. - Rev. M. M. Guin was born at Williamson county, Tennessee, on the 22nd day of January, 1807, and died at his residence in Schulenburg, Fayette county, on the third day of May, 1885, by reason of strength almost living out his four score. He was married to Miss Mary Carson in 1827, and moved to Texas in 1838. Professed religion during a camp-meeting held in Smith county, Texas, in 1845; and joined the Presbyterian Church, but on reading the Scriptures decided his place was among the Methodists. He was licensed to preach in 1854 and was elected to and received deacon's orders from Texas Conference, by Bishop George F. Pierce, November 28th, 1858. My first acquaintance with Bro. Guin began in the year 1860, in Lavaca county, Texas; he was then a local preacher at Andrews Chapel. It was near this place that he lost his first wife. He was again happily married to Mrs. Lucinda Medris in November, 1859, in the State of Mississippi. Bro. Guin was a sufferer and confined for years before his death. He bore his afflictions with the fortitude and patience becoming a Christian. It was his delight to converse about an experimental knowledge of the Christian religion. He was want to meditate on the law of the Lord day and night; he seemed only desirous to depart and be with Christ. On the 16th day of June, 1882, he professed sanctification and it seemed as if he was in a new atmosphere radiant with life — on a higher plane of enjoyment than ever before. God, holiness and heaven are his themes now. It was pleasant to associate with him, and it may truly be said, "that the place where the good man meets his fate is privileged beyond the common walks of a virtuous life, quite on the verge of heaven." He was a good citizen, a kind friend, and an obliging neighbor, a loving husband and father. He leaves a wife, children and grandchildren, who mourn his departure. May God comfort the bereaved.
