Services for Afton
McGee Moore, also know as "Colonel" Moore, age 95 of Buffalo have been
scheduled for Friday, October 19 at 10:00 am at the Walters Funeral Home
Chapel in Centerville. Rev. James Vermillion will officiate and
interment will be in the Parker Cemetery in the Flo Community of Leon
County. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 12
noon until 8 pm with the Moore family present to receive friends from 6
- 8 pm.
Afton McGee Moore was
born in Flo, Texas (just south-east of Buffalo) on October 28, 1911. His
parents were Walker Jasper and Zelda Ruth (Yerby) Moore. As a very
small child, he was nick-named "Colonel". He lived most of his
entire life in Leon County where he farmed and ranched. He was
also a carpenter and worked with Clarence Way and Earl Watson, men who
built many houses in Leon County. He worked for Shell when they
did an extensive survey of Leon County. Because of and eye injury,
he could not serve in the armed service. However, he did work in a
plane factory during World War II. He married Lois Edith Hill on
October 10, 1931 and they were married for 76 years. "Colonel"
Moore was a member of the Flo Community Baptist Church, the Masonic
Lodge in Buffalo and the Order of the Eastern Star in Buffalo.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; his step mother Claudia Raines Moore; sisters, Gladys
Orilla Lathrop, Inez Griffin, Estelle Dale Moore, Evelyn B. Bell and
Marie Maxwell and by brothers, Randolph Buchanan and Harvey Moore.
"Colonel" Moore died at his home on October 16, 2007 just twelve days
before his 96th birthday.
Mr. Moore is survived by
his wife, Lois Moore of Buffalo; son, Earl Hill Moore and wife Betty of
Centerville; daughter, Lona Zane East and husband Don of Groves; sister,
Audrey Mae Squyres of Palestine; brother, Jack Wayne Moore and wife
Shirley of Palestine; five grandchildren, Donna East Crawford (Russ) Of
Anacortes, Washington, Danna East Perello of Nederland, Bobby East
(Carol) of Grand Prairie, Lori Ann Moore Barnett (Ronnie) of the Flo
Community and Sheri Lynn Moore Sheppard (James) of Lumberton; seven
great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
