Shiloh Cemetery

The Shiloh Cemetery was established August 9, 1919.  The land, consisting of one acre, was purchased from Robert D. Byrd, his wife, Martha J. Byrd, and their daughter, Josephine Byrd, for the sum of $200.00

The committee for this transaction was E. M. Speights, W. C. Cook, and R. H. Stokes.

This acre, the cemetery, was rapidly filling up so additional land had to be purchased.  On July 31, 1959, one half acre of land was bought from Mr. and Mrs. Gainor Lindsey.  The Committee for buying this land was M. R. Sterling, U. L. Young and G. W. Winningham.

After seeing this wasn't enough land to accommodate our needs, on July 31, 1970, one acre of land was purchased from Mrs. Mary Davis.  The committee for this purchase consisted of the following: Walker Morgan, Curtis Van Winkle, and Floyd Vestal.

The first person buried in the Shiloh Cemetery was W. M. Unger.  He was killed when a team ran away with a load of hay and he fell from the wagon.

The second was the man from whom the first land was purchased, Robert D. Byrd.  He died in 1922.

Alvis E. Wells, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wells, was buried in 1922, that being January 24.  Other prominent people buried at Shiloh include Flamings, Robertsons, News, Cooks, MxXlroys, Wells, Thorntons, Weavers, Potts, Mullins, Sterlings, Morgans, Liles, Smiths, Allen, Causey, Speights, Bradleys, Woods, Morgans, Cashs, Carters, Tylers, Evans, Nolans, Masters, Shamblins, Hines, Sundays, Winninghams, McDonalds, Adams, Eubanks, Colsons, Loflands, Carliles, Camerons, Champions, Montgomerys, Moreheads, Nicholsons, Owens, Pollards, Van Winkles, Lucases, and Herrings.

A Memorial Service is held each year, usually on the first Sunday afternoon at 2:00 P.M.

Lots are sold for $50.00 each for a lot 16' x 16'.

The cemetery has a volunteer way of donating Monies for upkeep of the cemetery and one man is hired as caretaker.

The Shiloh Cemetery is located about six miles south of Mexia on Highway 39, Limestone Co., TX
