Survivor of the Massacre of Goliad.
Zachariah S. Brooks was one of four members of Shackelford's Company who
escaped
together from the massacre on March 27th, the others being
Dillard Cooper, Isaac D. Hamilton and Wilson Simpson. Cooper, Brooks,
a
nd Simpson signed a joint affidavit at New Orleans April 27th, 1836; Cooper
made a
longer statement to Mrs. Fannie A. D. Darden in 1870.
Cooper says that Simpson and he escaped together,
and that after reaching the
San Antonio river, they discovered two of their companions, Zachariah Brooks
and Isaac Hamilton. In the fleshy parts of both of Hamilton's legs
were wounds,
one made by a gunshot, the other by a bayonet. They spent the night at
a place
about five miles from the fort.
"That night, we started forth, Simpson and myself
carrying Hamilton.
Brooks, though severely wounded, was yet able to travel."
That night they smelled the fires which were consuming
the bodies of their slain companions.
Near Texana, Hamilton was given up for dead, and the others went on without
him.
Eventually they reached the Colorado, at Mercer's Crossing, on the twelfth
day
after the massacre. Hamilton, after being retaken by the enemy, also
escaped.

He died on 1 Feb 1887 in Harwood, Gonzales, Texas.
Family legend has it that his middle name was "Washington".
It should be noted that there is NO evidence to support this legend.

George W. Brooks was one of five members of Captain
Shackelford's Company,
under Lieutenant William C. Francis, who escaped from Fannin's battle
of March 19th
through being mounted, and in the advance guard with Horton.
He was paid, curiously, only from Dec. 12, 1835 to March 12, 1836 --
a week before the battle.
His brother, Milton Brooks, collected his pay.

A letter of Dr. Shackelford's written from Courtland,
Ala., Dec. 22, 1854, states that
Brooks was then residing in Texas, near La Grange, and his brother
Milton S. Brooks near Chappell Hill.
