- BARTON, EDMONDSON, MCDOWEL
posted by Susan
Innmon Nelson on Friday, November 14, 1997
- I have a letter dated 5/15/1868, written by my gr-gr-grandmother
Nancy
MCDOWEL to her children telling of the murder of John Lewis McDOWEL. He
was murdered by a man named EDMONDSON while the family was visiting "up
on Mukewater/Mirkewater" and after a night of drinking with Ben BARTON.
He was shot while leaving "the grocery." The letter ends by asking her
children to come quickly and bring "bread stuff if you can for we are
about
out & there is none in the country hardly." An obituary for one of
John Lewis McDOWEL's sons states that the family moved to McCullough
County
TX in 1864. Any ideas about place names, etc? Susan Innmon Nelson
