| This gourd vine grows runners up to 30 feet and will climb fences, brush piles and thick weeds. It requires little water and will mature and set fruit (gourds) in poor soil. The vine has a bad odor and the blooms are especially foul, attracting hords of small insects. This source of pollination is the likely reason the plant is so successful. The gourd vine does not appear to be a source of food for any animal and few insects. The gourds seldom reach baseball size with most being somewhat smaller. I know of no use for the gourd after it matures except my grandmother used a dried buffalo gourd inside a sock when darning a hole. |
