The Cemetery Section is incomplete and I expect it will be some time before I can collect burial lists, driving
directions and pictures for each cemetery. I can only hope those of you that have the needed data will send the
information to complete the Cemetery Section of this website as quickly as possible.
A Brief History: Created from Bexar County in 1850; re-created and reorganized in 1856. Named for the 1778 Governor of Coahuila and noted Indian fighter, Juan de Ugalde, with the name Anglicized. Uvalde County's most famous son was John Nance Garner, Vice-President of the United States under Franklin Roosevelt from 1933 to 1941. His nickname of "Cactus Jack" was earned through forthright comments such as the office of vice-president "isn't worth a bucket of warm spit." Uvalde County is located on the southwest side of the Texas Hill Country between Del Rio and San Antonio and the lands include parts of the Edwards Plateau and the Nueces River. The county seat is Uvalde, a small town at the crossroads of two of our nation's longest highways, US 90 and US 83, both of which extend from border to border. A host of historic, interesting and recreational sites make Uvalde a wonderful place to visit. For a more detailed History of Uvalde County check out The Handbook of Texas Online.

Ben Kinchlow, former Co-host of Pat Robertson's 700 Club, was born December 27, 1936, in Uvalde. Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey was born November 4th, 1969 in Uvalde.
The USGenWeb Project: Several years ago the USGenWeb Project was created to further the
craft of genealogy in the United States and to the extent possible, keep genealogy free. One of the goals was to also develop a network of volunteers
who would establish a genealogy program in each state. For this state it is the TXGenWeb Project. Use these links to visit the two websites which
fully explain the goals, methods, and successes of both projects. One part of the ultimate goal is to have a county website for each county in every
state of the union. There are 254 counties in Texas and it is quite a chore to keep enough volunteers to cooordinate those counties.
If you are interested in adopting a Texas County, (becoming a coordinator)
Go Here for a list of orphan counties or
to get placed on a waiting list for a particular county. To see a list of all the counties and the county
coordinators, then Click Here.
Working With Surnames: Surnames grouped by county are one of the most useful tools available to the genealogist or family researcher. It not only can add to the information gathered by the individual making the search but many times the local contact for a particular surname comes away with information he/she has needed after years of searching. Gathering these surnames and email addresses will be slow in the beginning but when the value of the Surname Page becomes evident, the list will quickly grow to several pages of names. So go the Surname Page right now and send your surname or surnames for this county and your email address and I will get it posted as quickly as possible.
Site Manager:I am Hugh Swift and as your county coordinator I will do my best to keep your site in good repair with links that work, information that is correct, and subjects that are valuable in your genealogical searches. To that end, please click on my name and notify me by email immediately when you find a broken link, a misspelled word or I've written a sentence that
makes no sense! I value any suggestions you may have to make this a better site.
