Uvalde County
A Brief History: Created from Bexar County in 1850; re-created and reorganized in 1856. Named for the 1778 Governor of Coahuila and noted Indian fighter, Juan de Ugalde, with the name Anglicized. Uvalde County's most famous son was John Nance Garner, Vice-President of the United States under Franklin Roosevelt from 1933 to 1941. His nickname of "Cactus Jack" was earned through forthright comments such as the office of vice-president "isn't worth a bucket of warm spit." Uvalde County is located on the southwest side of the Texas Hill Country between Del Rio and San Antonio and the lands include parts of the Edwards Plateau and the Nueces River. The county seat is Uvalde, a small town at the crossroads of two of our nation's longest highways, US 90 and US 83, both of which extend from border to border. Famous People from Uvalde County: Former Vice Presidend John Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner was born near Detroit, Texas, on Nov. 22, 1868 and began law practice in Uvalde in 1890 and died in Uvalde on Nov. 7, 1967. Former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe was born April 23, 1923 in Uvalde and makes his home there today. Hollywood superstar Dale Evens (wife of Roy Rogers) was born Frances Octavia Smith in Uvalde on October 31, 1912. Ben Kinchlow, former Co-host of Pat Robertson's 700 Club, was born December 27, 1936, in Uvalde. Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey was born November 4th, 1969 in Uvalde.

The USGenWeb Project: Several years ago the USGenWeb Project was created to further the craft of genealogy in the United States and to the extent possible, keep genealogy free. One of the goals was to also develop a network of volunteers who would establish a genealogy program in each state. For this state it is the TXGenWeb Project. Working With Surnames: Surnames grouped by county are one of the most useful tools available to the genealogist or family researcher. It not only can add to the information gathered by the individual making the search but many times the local contact for a particular surname comes away with information he/she has needed after years of searching.
